Using a silver age book as an example, what are all the costs (CGC and CBCS) of getting a book witnessed and slabbed? Let's say the artist charges $30 for a witnessed signature. Assuming Silver Age slabbing is $28. Is there another charge from CBCS/CGC for the witnessing? Is there an additional charge for the witnessed label vs a Universal label? |

For CBCS there is no charge for the witnessing if they’re at the show and you ask them for a witness. Third party witnessing services would cost extra. On top of the regular grading fees, there is a $5 fee for ASP (yellow label). Other than that, all the same charges for a regular book would apply |

Good to know, thanks. So for CBCS looks like maybe total cost for Silver Age $33 plus artist fee, for post 1975 $23 plus artist fee. Maybe another $3-$5 return shipping. How about CGC?

A follow up question would be how much does a sig actually add to the value of the comic? How much more do they sell for compared to an unsigned copy?

@dielinfinite Are there only a few signatures that demand a premium? Do people like expensive keys signed? I have not looked at the breakdown of profit margins for signed books. I personally don't buy anything signed. I wonder if I am the only one. I see a lot of people just get books signed to sell. |

Don't forget the cost of return shipping plus handling fees.

Very generally speaking, the less common a signature is to obtain the more valuable it is. This is all confused by popularity of the individual. Stan Lee signed thousands of items but with his popularity extending beyond comics, in many cases, people were still paying more for his signature than the value of the item itself. Signed comics are a rather large niche but a niche nonetheless. There are collectors that want only unsigned comics, some that cringe at the prospect of anything older than a modern comic being signed. In all cases, it matters who signed it and to who it’s being sold. For example an Amazing Fantasy #15 signed by Stan Lee would have different value to different buyers than an AF15 signed by Tom Holland. There really are a lot of factors going into determining the value of a signed comic and it’s not even considering multiple signatures on one book |

Quote:Originally Posted by moodswing It seems that Popular+Dead= High signature value. The reason I brought up the question is that for obtainable signatures (still living) it seems that in many cases it would be cheaper to buy the book already slabbed and signed than to obtain a raw, get it signed and submit for slabbing. Of course this does not apply if you already own the book and probably applies more to lower value mid grade books than to higher grade. |
