How do you pack your books for shipping to CBCS?10855

Since so many of us are currently taking advantage of the 20% discount, I have a vision of 10-12 forum members in their living rooms packing their books for submission. I figure we must all have our own ideas of clever ways to protect the 9.8 from becoming a 9.4. What do you do?

We should have the forum rate our packages. HeinzDad private msg quote post Address this user
I’ve often wondered this, I’ve only submitted directly.

Here’s a video with some good info. It’s made for CGC but it’s the same for CBCS

If I’m only submitting a few books, I put them in a Gemini mailer with some extra cardboard to sturdy the mailer then fit it into a a legal-sized flat rate priority mail envelope

I'm completely paranoid, and also have absolutely no faith in the care taken by UPS with my packages, so I over-pack my comics. Three boxes, first inside the second, both inside the third, bubble wrap between each layer. Also, a Lady at my local UPS Store told me insurance only covers if the box is lost, not any damage to contents, so they have even less reason to care about banging it around.
So I sweat every time a box leaves my hands.

My process always starts with a Flat Rate box. The one that is 11" long by 8.5" wide by 5.5" tall. Pretty much the perfect size for 15-25 comics, ships for $14 anywhere. I reinforce the sides and corners by cutting strips from another flat rate box.

For expensive books, you can put triple-boarded, bagged comics into top-loaders before packing them. It gets expensive because they don’t send the top-loaders back, but it gives a little more peace of mind.

Not true I had a book damaged it went from a 9.6 to a 9.2 I made a claim and I got a check for the difference.

Just make sure you take pictures of all corners and front and back of the book before you ship it. Insure it and you’re covered.

Similar to that CGC video and also use Mylites 2 and Full Backs as suggested by several forum members in the past.

OK, 4 hours later my 18 books are submitted and packed. Used Golden Age Mylite 2 with Full back, 1 individually bagged book on each side of the full back, facing each other. Of course I had to ultimately slice the tape to open the package and add the order form! Probably packed them too tight and ruined em before they ever left my home.

They say the books can sense the worrying and tend to warp badly from overworry….just saying.

That's exactly why I had to start drinking 2 hours into the process. Otherwise I would have ruined them with worry warps and never finished packing.

If you have ever received books back from CGC or CBCS, you have a good idea on how to ship books to them.

The CGC video is overly complex, it is not necessary to tape books to a sheet of cardboard. When CGC ships slabs back - or rejected raws - THEY DO NOT tape books to cardboard sheets. So why tell us to do so?

I've been shipping comics since 1978, the concept is simple and applies to most anything, not just comics.

1) A sturdy box, at least an inch bigger in all directions (top, bottom, sides, ends) than your comics.

2) If you only have a couple of comics, the cardboard is a good idea. Otherwise, with a stack of comics use half a dozen sheets of newsprint and wrap the stack like you would a Christmas/birthday present. Use an extra backing board top and bottom of the stack (or cut cardboard sheet to the same size)

3) Use cushioning material all around the books (that is why you want an inch or two in all directions. Bubble wrap is great, but crumpled up newspaper works well too and you can find it for free.

The idea is simple. You don't want your stack of books to slide around. You don't want your stack of books to touch the box in any direction. The bubble wrap or crumpled paper serves as a "crush zone" between your books and box.

The standard USPS flat rate box is tempting because of price and with proper packing is fairly safe. But better still is using a USPS 1092 inside a USPS 1095. It's not flat rate so might cost a bit more, but the resulting package is much stiffer as it's double boxed. The 1092 slides perfectly into the 1095, with an extra inch on both ends. Again, use bubble wrap, packing peanuts or crumpled newspaper to fill the gap on the ends. Extra crush zone here.

Years ago I criticized the "flip and ship" mailers inside a USPS Flat Legal rate envelope. Because such doesn't follow any of the rules above. But I have to admit for eight books or less, they work really well. ONE of the reasons why they work well is Flat Rate envelopes travel with regular mail, not parcels. So it almost never happens that a postal employee throws an 80 lb box of ball bearings on top of your flip and ship mailer. But I still wouldn't ship anything expensive in these mailers. The rules listed above should be followed for expensive or precious stuff.

Just packed up two books yesterday. I actually took a couple of pics just in case.

So that is 1 book taped to a sheet of cardboard with another book taped to cardboard stacked on top. I top that with another sheet of cardboard, and tape them together in a nice stack. I tape every side of each corner, so no chance of shifting. I then tape the two flaps of the box to the stack, throw in my order form (with promotional code included), then tape the other two flaps shut. Done deal! Signed, seal, delivered!

As far as tape goes, the low tack adhesive painter’s tape is highly recommended. Mishaps can occur on either end, packing or unpacking.

Bagged and boarded then painters taped to a piece of corrugated cardboard.. I put three to four (depending on thickness) of these in a gemini mailer tape that shut. Then I put as many as I have made up and bubbled wrapped (tightly) into a box, along with a invoice, kind of overstuffed with bubble wrap to make a no rattle tight fit.. Tape it shut and send it FedEx Ground.. (I get a great deal from FedEx) If I ship USPS I do basically the same thing. The tighter in the box the better.. If I were to ship UPS I'd have to make a steel box.. We receive more stuff with damaged boxes From UPS than all the rest..
When I ship slabs to buyers I do the same.. For low priced raw books I bag & board them, then painters tape it to a piece of cardboard and put them in a Gemini mailer and send either first class or Media USPS Usually under 10.00 they go media to keep the total cost down. After 10 the shipping cost goes up a couple bucks. and they go first class at about 50.00 I will start double boxing.. of course the shipping cost will go up then..
The only problem with FedEx is if they live way out (example: Wyoming ranch out) the cost goes up because of travel time and fuel.. Then I will ship USPS..

if the idea is avoid damage DURING transit, just run the books through a six sheet paper shredder, empty into a box and seal and ship. The comics will get there in the same condition as sent, guaranteed. Works everytime
