How do you guys feel about factory defects in comics?
I received a book that had an inside page ripped and folded into the book and you could see the page ear near the back of the book.

I kinda find them intriguing. One of a kind.

I find them extremely irritating lol I hate paying money for a defective product.

I got one of my personal grails and a key for any Hulk collector on Facebook. It's complete and in respectable condition. It's not quite "right" though. It has a factory defect. It never received 2 of the 3 staples, and some of the pages are misaligned because of it.

Attaching photos, not sure you can tell in the spine.

You have a lot of comics with three staples? :friendlyjab:

Jab accepted. But I am curious about the effect on grading. Having only one staple. I'm told factory defects don't impact it but I don't know yet. This will be one of the first I send out to get the CBCS treatment.

In fairness until this book I never gave much thought to it. kind of took it for granted. The seller is even curious as to what impact it will have on the grade.

I don't mean to hijack a thread, but I have similar question about defects that come right from the printer. I notice a lot white cover comics will sometimes have a slight color distortion along the edge. For example, this weekend at my LCS they had a ton of the wonder woman and batman variant covers in stock, but every single book had a slight pink smudge near the top staple.

Is something like this a printer error and will it effect grade?

Thanks

It's pretty common for books to get ink smudges or repeating color drops like you are describing from the printing process. How this may affect a book's grade I'm not sure. Some problems like this are well known for certain books, especially if a large part or even the whole print run got the same blot or smudge. In most cases it probably won't detract from the grade, but to be sure, I'd call ahead and ask one of the graders.
As far as missing staples, I've sent in a few books like this to the (other) grading company and it wasn't even mentioned in the grading notes on any of the books. I think of the 3 I've sent in like this, they all got a Universal grade and two graded at 8.5 and one at 9.0. Did the missing staple affect the grade? I don't know. Now if there are staple holes and no staple, that might be a different story, but if there is no staple and no staple holes (like in the books I sent in), then you can be certain that happened in the production process.

I was looking for a nice copy of Sub-mariner #26 (Red Raven) a while back. It was tough finding one without a green smudge up by the price. Just a factory thing, probably not a big deal as far as grading, but I don't like it.

Depends on the defect. I like the double covers, but don't like the trim errors. I have a J.I.M. Annual #1 in great condition, but inside has

I didn't find the defect until some time later, so this was the comic that taught me to inspect the inside immediately after receiving it, and ultimately saved me money in doing so after receiving later purchases with undisclosed defects or resto.

Extra covers = cool, everything else = likely not wanted

IMHO unless the same defect appears on every copy and it is not extra covers (or pages) it should count against the grade in some way. Of course minor ink errors and some tracks or scrapes I might not have as much weight, but generally books without printer defects are far more common than books with so the defects should carry some weight.

Here's an instance of production related color loss on a well known issue. The little dot of white on the left is on every copy I have ever seen, the larger dot on the right is on some, but not all copies.

I bought a meat grinder on amazon for $60 and it's changed my life. kaptainmyke private msg quote post Address this user
I collect comics and figures that were put on a destroy or recall list. Getting them graded makes them super valuable in my experience so far. Forgetting items or missing items inside packaging always gets my attention.

Manufacturer's damage to items is questionable.
