Mylar Bags: For Slabbed CBCS and CGC Books10804

I don't believe this....and I know you don't care that I don't believe this. GAC private msg quote post Address this user
A while back I bought a package of acid free bags meant for slabbed books. I started to bag all my graded books and immediately found out the bags don't fit (they're too small! WTF!?).

I know some slabs are thicker than others (square bound books etc.) but these bags don't fit regular CGC/CBCS slabs.

Can someone recommend mylar bags that will snuggly fit regular CGC/CBCS slabs (and ones for square bound slabs too) please?

Thanks!

Out of Curiosity why would you use Mylar for gradedbooks? To prevent scratches?

@poka Great question...not really sure why, but when I search online that's what comes up. I'm sure acid free is just as good. Mylar may be overkill and maybe not even warranted.

The bags I bought were for slabs and they don't fit...weird.

I use Hot Flips polypropylene bags for slabs. They are acid neutral and have the self-stick bar across the back. So far, they have fit every slab I have used them on. They are like $15 for a pack of 50. I picked a pack up a few years ago at a convention, because the majority of slabs that I purchase seem to come with either no bag at all or a beat-to-crap ill-fitting magazine bag around the slab. I think they are worth it to protect the slabs from fingerprints and scratches. I bought a second pack in November at RICC.

I would consider buying Mylar ones if I planned on displaying my slabs, as I believe Mylar blocks UV light.

lol, when I bought off you last time you were kind enough to give me some of these bags. To my surprise they didn’t fit. Since you did me a favor and hooked me up I sure wasn’t going to say “they don’t fit”.

BCW makes poly and mylar bags for slabs. The old ones they made fit snug onto non-Frankenslab CGC slabs. The newer gen they made fits CGC and CBCS slabs. Resealable flaps, and what not.

@HeinzDad That's right! I forgot about that! Jeez, sorry about that!

It's so odd they don't fit.

@Studley_Dudley - Mike, are you sure you are using their Mylar ones? According to their site, they have 4 ml Mylars with no flap, and 2 ml Mylars with a flap (non-resealable). They do offer two sizes of polypropylene bags for slabs and both are resealable.

Thanks @esaravo. The Graded 2 mil and 4 mil mylar bags are not resealable. The ploy bags are resealable. It was a rough night of sleep and I need more caffeine. I have used their poly bags for graded books, and E Gerber's legal size mylars for slabs as well.

May I ask someone to post a link (eBay, Amazon, anywhere else, it doesn't matter) to these bags that fit please? I don't want to accidentally buy the same bags I bought before. I really thought these bags would be One Size Fits All...not the case though.

I learned the hard way...mylar does nothing against UV...I had always believed it filtered UV but it doesn't, sadly

@Studley_Dudley...apologies in advance for my ignorance, but what is the difference between the two poly options you provided links to? I see a slight difference in size, but does one only for CGC slabs whereas the other fits CBCS as well?

@tonnage71 the 9x14 polys are sized to fit the newer CGC slabs. If I was buying them again, I would go for the 9x14 polys. They have a nice fit to them with not a lot of overhang or anything. I used to swap out all my CGC Kroger bags with resealable polys. The 9x14 will fit the CBCS slabs too. As far as thicker slabs, like for a Dark Knight Returns #1 or something, I don't know if those will work, which is why I have the legal size mylars from E. Gerber as well.

I always keep them in the clear bag they come in from CGC/CBCS, is that not a good bag?

So there is this from the ZE gerber site regarding mylar, light and displaying comics where they can be faded...

"Mylar History:
Since Mylar was first introduced about 40 years ago, the knowledge of its benefits over other common plastics was not widespread and the practice of using Mylar was even less widespread. First, the country's leading authorities on preservation, such as the National Archives and the Library of Congress, established that Mylar was, by far, the best plastic. In fact, they have made it a requirement and do not allow any deviation from their specifications.
E. Gerber introduced Mylar to the comic market in 1979. The most knowledgeable collectors have switched to Mylar since then. Slowly, museums, archival institutions and those in the collecting areas of currency and stamps have switched to Mylar. Comic collectors have been among the most knowledgeable and have been switching for years. However, we won't rest until there's a Mylar on every collectible.
Is Light Bad for our Comics?
Enough cannot be said about this topic. We would appreciate your support in teaching the collecting public that accumulated light eventually fades comic book covers. You cannot see it fade, just as you cannot see a tree grow, but go away and come back in 10 years and you will be surprised by how much that tree grew. The same thing applies to comic cover fading. Leave a comic displayed in your store and a couple of years later compare it to an identical comic stored in the dark. WOW! Unfortunately, at this point, it's too late for that comic; the damage is irreversible.
Ultra-Violet Light - UV
All plastics and glass stop some UV light, so many advertise that their "Protector" blocks UV. The truth Is that they stop only some of the damaging rays. Even Mylar will not stop all UV.
Our specially Impregnated Mylar D stops 99% of the UV light. Mylar D is accepted as photo safe to direct contact and is used internationally by archives and museums.
Yes, it costs 8 times more than standard Mylar, but it blocks UV hundreds of times more than other plastics.
