Weekly Cover Contest Discussion Thread10782

Moderator Jesse_O private msg quote post Address this user
@Reelgee I usually try to pick something a little offbeat. Many times I will Google the topic or look at the "browse covers" search option on MCS. This week though, Spawn immediately popped into my head when I read the theme. I remembered that cover because it was the Alex Ross variant for #301. There is a trade dress and a virgin cover for it. As for voting, I vote for whatever cover I like the best. It may not be the best as far as composition, color, perspective, etc. In fact, my tastes often run into the obscure, oddball or offbeat. In short, I pick and vote for covers that most appeal to me.

I always vote the best cover. I don't have friends here so I don't get many votes on my posts in general so after trying to win once in this contest and never winning over the years I just don't bother.

I did mess with peeps here nearly a year ago and hoped someone picked my cover to run in the contest.

So I won that one by proxy and using reverse psychology for laughs but that doesn't count.

Seriously I like to see covers I've never seen before.
Preferably from the golden age as that and silver, bronze are my collecting areas.

Congrats Ed winning this week and happy birthday 👍

@southerncross you have at least one friend here!🤚I know what you mean, though. The cover contest does seem to be a popularity contest sometimes.

@southerncross You have me as a friend here!
I vote for covers I like or are in CBCS cases. I don't care who puts a cover up as I don't vote that way.
I also don't care about winning. I mean it's cool, but the fun is picking covers and playing while seeing cool books.

@Reelgee - for me, I have some similar criteria to that of @flanders, but I will also tend to vote towards a CBCS encased cover. But, first and foremost, the artwork has to sing to me. Further, if there is something special about the weekly criteria towards that cover, like a double entendre, title, etc. it might garner more of my vote. Maybe it is just the character. Oh, and Fingers & feet! A cover with an artist that can do anatomy well will tend to get my votes....Unless of course we have a Liefeld only weekly contest.

P.S. LOL, I had been working on this post between work calls for the past hour, and after I posted, I see that I share a criteria with @sborock .

@michaelekrupp @sborock thanks,

And seeing new covers of books for the first time here on the forum is a way to see what I may pick up in the future.

Many times I have submitted a cover that I knew didn't stand a chance of winning. I just thought it was cool, and that is my entry. A couple of times a cover I entered that I figure would be lucky to score even 1 vote, actually won in a tight race. And there have been quite a few covers I entered that I thought would do really well, actually scored zero. lol

I've been buying comics since the mid 60's, and when I see an awesome cover show up that I've never seen, it's a bit of a thrill.

I try to limit my entries to the GA era (horror genre preferably), but it doesn't always work out.

Win or lose, it's a really fun contest.

Hmmmm may I’m not asking the the right question. When I pick Batman who laughs,it was the two little robins dancing around that made go with them instead of any of ghost rider books I had. What stood out on Ed pick that made 17 people pick? Was it her outfit?the type of art? Sorry Ed if you think I’m picking on you,I’m not your book was the perfect example I’m looking for to improve my taste n skills

I always try to use a comic from my collection - one that I still own or a book I sold/traded and have a scan of it. Most of my books are Silver and Bronze Age, so I tend to post books from those eras. I never think about winning, and I am honestly happy when I get at least one vote. As soon as I see the new theme, I can usually think of a few covers pretty quickly. For this week’s contest, I immediately thought of a few Superman, Wonder Woman, and Luke Cage covers. I do think iconic older covers with great artwork have a better chance of getting votes than most Modern covers. But I love seeing everyone’s choices, and I get to see a lot of covers that I have never seen before (or just don’t remember), and I do appreciate the artwork on a lot of the Moderns that get posted that I would never see otherwise. I always wish I could vote for more than 3 covers, because that is so hard for me to do. And if people want me to stop entering the contest, I am fine with that too.

@esaravo I agree with the idea of using comics from my own collection. Also I just post what I like. Often I post the first thing that comes into my head and regret it later. Winning is not really that important either. Nobody seems to like Harveys (horror excepted) but I post them anyway. I honestly just look at the covers when I vote, not who posted them.

@Reelgee the realistic anatomically correct artwork, CBCS encasemant, somewhat atypical wonder woman cover.

I submit covers that I like and if others like it too, then great! I also vote for the covers I like best and that usually resembles the books I collect, which is primarily silverage and bronze age with a little copper and gold. Rarely do I vote for modern books but I certainly have in the past. When I vote, I look for the 3 best covers that best fits the theme. Once I narrow the 3 covers down, I then rank them.

EXACTLY IT IS...NO DOUBT...ABSOLUTELY NO DOUBT! My remedy would be that covers be submitted anonymously to a chosen Moderator (or specified board member) every week and posted without anyone's knowledge as to who submitted the cover...then we would surely NOT see the same rotation of members who constantly win. How fun would it be to select a winner and then reveal who posted the winning cover after ALL votes were counted?? Just a suggestion.

What a great idea. I'm sure all those that have won at least since the contest has been running wouldn't object.

Good for you 👍

Though a cool cover contest would be a take off the "There's only one thread"

Post a cover of a book that appears to only have one copy ever graded by CBCS

It's there forum and Beckett paid good money getting the census up and running.
Sort of advertising the feature to other forum members that have never used it.

Hi guys, there was a topic that I can’t find, about using your insurance instead of shipping value anyone know how to find it? If not it’s ok just FYI my comic policy said,I can claim up to 200 bucks without a signature . Over 200, need signatures to and from each location. I only have coverage for up to 10,000

Just voted, and noticed that my entry did not appear. I must not have been logged in when I posted it this weekend. Probably wouldn't have won anyway as there were a lot of great covers.

@dielinfinite - I was real close to putting up Marvels 4 due to the clarity of the reflection, but, a zealot has his go to, so #3 with Surfer reflecting Torchie was my choice.

@brysb that Fighting Forces 35 is one wicked reflection cover.

I immediately thought of Silver Surfer for this weeks contest but didn't post one because I believe the surfing is to be happening on waves/water.

The reason I didn't specify the type of wave, whether water/air/space.. etc, is because I like for people to be creative and make the venture.

So, yes,... a Silver Surfer cover is perfectly acceptable as long as he is on the board and there is movement.

Posting a Silver Surfer cover is not original or creative in my opinion since they are plentiful, but whatever. Now post a cover of the Silver Surfer riding WATER WAVES and I will be impressed.
