Is Rob Liefeld a Turd Sandwich?10583

Masculinity takes a holiday. EbayMafia private msg quote post Address this user
Since it's a slow night on the forum, something to liven it up:

Rob Liefeld was part of a few interviews in the Chris Claremont's X-men documentary. He was pretty self-satisfied and seemed dismissive of the work that was done before him. Seemed to think X-men was pretty boring even though it was the biggest comic property in the world. Seriously he was incredibly dismissive...he said that in one issue of X-men the girls would go shopping and in the next issue the guys would go to the mall. Didn't seem like someone I would want to have a drink with. I personally was never a fan though. Always felt like he was part of a "Bro" crew that basically turned mainstream comics into something comparable to Professional Wresting with their over-the-top characters, exotic costumes and muscular drawings. But I guess there are plenty of people who like that kind of thing. What's his reputation like in the industry?

He was fortunate to ride the coattails of Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane, and Erik Larsen. As a kid, I didn't know any better and thought his style was cool like the others. I went back and read the trade of X-Tinction Agenda. His art is distracting from the story. Seriously, going from Jim Lee's art to Rob's was terrible. I swear there was one panel where a character literally had 2 left legs. I'll try to find it.

I never met the man so I can’t judge his character but I DO think he’s a shit artist!

In follow up to actually reading, he's a clown shoe. Agree on riding coat tails and the man just CANNOT DRAW. On top of that he is pushing the fact of creating a deadpool "character" which in fact he had nothing to do with. One, it's based on death stroke. Two, all current personalities have NOTHING to do with him. His writing and drawing was boring dribble on anything.

Lol. That South Park reference was actually a better fit and my first choice but I wasn't sure about using it on the Forum.

He stays relevant / in discussion by being controversial - from his bonkers art style to the way he markets himself and his work in public forum and takes uncalled , headline grabbing shots at others ..

Genius when you think about it , considering comes across as a talentless d*bag.

I have very many friends and associates in comics fandom who have related to good meetings with Rob Liefeld, mostly at signings. His artwork however leaves much to be desired.

I’ve said before, Liefeld is Deadpool’s creator in the same way a sperm donor is a father.

Was in California a few months ago, and had a free afternoon to check out local comic shops. The most promising one had a line out the door when I arrived. I figured it might be something interesting, until I saw the sign that Liefeld was there to sign copies of Major X (and ONLY Major X).

Got back in the car and left.

I take it all back, I had no idea the dude was that talented. Definitely not Pro Wrestling inspired Bro art. Definitely did not grow up playing with WWF action figures and believing he was a Li'l Hulkster. Creative as hell and Clever as f**k. I mean look at that dude. He has a huge X on his chest and he's probably like a Major in the military too. I think they call that a double Nintendre, bro...Sweet!

@EbaySeller

It looks like other people don't agree with you and what they enjoy Rob drawing. This early X-Force page is at $1100.00 with 14 days to go on the auction. Except for it being an early X-Force page and being drawn and inked by Rob I have no idea why its going for that.

I totally get that, it wouldn't last if there were not a market for it. Doesn't mean they don't agree with my assessment, just means they like that kind of thing.

Any idea who inked this? Doesn't look like Liefeld's dots and scratches.
His art is tolerable when an inker fixes it (New Mutants 87).

I met him once. Sold him some Marvel Treasuries. Made a joke about him charging me $20 to sign his credit card receipt. I liked him. Some of his art is out there. I like it in general. It beats some of that manga style shit they try to pass off as art.

Looks like Rob has a different view of Claremont as he posted this yesterday on his social media accounts:

“Happy Birthday to The Godfather Of The X-Men!! By the time I broke into comic books, Chris Claremont had been writing the modern day X-Men for 12 years already! He is far and away Marvel Comics best selling author over the last 40 years. X-Men was the number one selling comic for a decade, and it was Chris at the helm, the great constant, shaping every unique adventure and saga. Dark Phoenix! Days Of Future Past! New Mutants! Legion! Imperial Guard! The Hellfire Club! Starjammers! Ms. Marvel! The X-Men as you know and enjoy them today flowed from his pen! Thank you”

He is a divisive figure within the community, there's no doubt about that. It looks like if he takes his time and isn't trying to meet a deadline, his stuff can be decent. Some love him, and some don't.
