Advice on how to fix a comic that has shifted in it's slab10561

I'd like to say I still turned out alright, but that would be a lie. flanders private msg quote post Address this user
I recently purchased this and it arrived in the mail today. Here are the photos from the seller:

And the pictures I took today after the book arrived:

Thanks for the help.

You can reslab...I'm not 100% you'd get another 8.5.

Yes, if this were a cbcs slab likely you could gently pry the slab apart without braking seals and be able to reach it with something to shift it. But he doesn’t have that option here.

And reslabbing is an added cost. I think he’s looking for minimal cost.

Try laying the slab on its side and gently tapping it on a hard table. Just enough to see if it will shift.

It’s inside an inner sleeve, right? So it should be protected enough that it won’t damage the book.

Once it’s straightened turn it around and do it to the other side if it’s still off center.

That’s what I would do. Just gentle taps.

I'd worry about when this was slabbed. That time period when they initially switched holders in...2012-2016ish where people books were getting trashed by the crappy slabbing technique. That's actually what I'm seeing here. I'm seeing what looks like additional damage to the book due to the well.

No nice way of looking at it short of reslab or prop it on its side for 40 days and 40 nights and pray it kinda corrects itself.

You can tap it back into place. It moved in the slab by being bumped around in the mail. It's not all that uncommon.

I had that happen with a book that had that style of inner sleeve. I just tilted it on it's side and tapped the bottom of the slab to straighten it back out, it's fairly easy.

Just never understood what CGC was thinking a few years back other than $$$ signs. We all slab for a reason. Protection.

It’s not a creep engine slab, it has an inner sleeve and they still use those ones currently depending on some determining factor.

Set it on its left side and lift only the top half side and slightly knock it back down in place. Keep the bottom edge right side on table.

If it was purchased through eBay, then it arrived not as described. Start a return and send it back. If the seller gives you any grief, start a case, and leave negative feedback.

Man... you got the CGC crap slab where they didn't include the inner wells that hold the comic in place. CGC will not do anything about it but make you send or back in for a reslab on your own dime. CGC sucks.

PS: be very careful that the front & back covers don't separate from the comic. I had that happen on an Totally Awesome Hulk #22. From the looks of it, yours is already starting.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I'd prefer to keep the comic since it doesn't look like the shifting caused any damage. It was graded on 9/14/18 so I think it's the regular crap slab, not the deluxe crap slab of the past.

@Drogio If this is a inner well issue, the CBCS inner well is completely sealed just like CGC's, so prying open the sides wouldn't allot any access to the book.

@flanders does this case have a inner well?

@Darryl_H the case has an inner well, it's not moving freely in the case, I tried banging it around a bit with no movement.

Update:
Problem solved, I inserted a piece of cardboard at the top and bottom of the case where it can pry open slightly and it started to shift. At least it solved the problem of the positioning of the comic, I'm not sure if this comic being in the case long term will have any of the effects that Ganasoth mentioned.

My own experience with this has me believe this isn't true. I had found I owned a copy of Tales of Suspense, that had been slabbed during the creep engine period, and notified them. They requested the serial number, reviewed the thing, then notified me to send them the slab (at their expense) for an entirely free reholdering and return. The replacement was done cost free to me entirely. They did decline to press the comic as they felt it had not been impacted at that point enough to justify that measure. Only had the one slab out of the few hundred I own but that one time at least there was no cost for me

Yeah again, this slab isn't a creep engine, it has an inner well.

Prying the case let off enough pressure to allow the comic to be shifted back to center.

I wouldn’t think it was an inner well issue given the amount it moved...didn’t think there was room to move around in the inner well.

There are two styles of inner well, one with corners cut out, and one that is more of a sleeve that relies on pressure to hold the comic. The latter does have room to move if the slab is impacted with enough force.

Perfect - glad you got it resolved without much hassle of dealing with a return or reslab that is always annoying

Not supposed to be, but it can happen.

I'm glad you didn't get screwed over like I did. First they ignored my e-mails with attached pics of the slab and said issues. Then I called on three separate occasions. First time they told me they would call me back. Second time, I got another person that didn't know anything about my previous call or previous emails. Third time after getting no return calls on the 2nd call in, I called again and they said I'd have to get it re-slabbed and I'd have to pay for it all. Granted I bought this comic from a LCS, but it's still a CGC slab that is the issue.
