PGX Slabbed...How would you sell?10467

I had no way of knowing that 9.8 graded copies signed by Adam Hughes weren't what you were looking for. drchaos private msg quote post Address this user

As long as we do not post pictures we should be OK.

I am pricing up some recent auction purchases and have a couple PGX books in the stack.

Archie & Me # 77 PGX 9.2
Daredevil # 189 PGX 9.9
Felix the Cat # 107 PGX 9.2
Return to Wonderland # 1 PGX 9.6

The Daredevil book cost about twice as much as the average of the other three but all four should be fairly easy to flip.

I think I would be very careful about spending more than $100 on a PGX slabbed book.

Just don’t mention free hats also. No, in all seriousness I didn’t know a lot of the things mentioned.

It would have to b a real real good deal to consider a pgx book. Hate the labels the slabs are strong and sturdy. I take it back I prob won’t buy a pgx slab

I was burned with a trimmed Journey into Mystery 89 in a PGX Universal slab. I purchased the JIM before all the controversy started. This was back around 2003/2004. I was willing to give a new company a chance.

I had it for a year or so and another collector questioned the right edge. I cracked it out of slab and sent to to a paper conservator for an independent check. It came backed "trimmed."

I checked my Paypal records and sure enough... I bought it from a seller named Terrance Leder.

The PGX slogan should be, "You feeling lucky?"

I bought a pgx about a year ago from a comic book store. It was a punisher 1987 issue 2 graded 9.2 for $10 as a curio for myself just to have one. I probably paid too much 🤔

@Zipper trimming was in fact the issue with the great CGC conspiracy.

Conspiracy? They caught a guy passing through trimmed books undetected. The guy was exposed, banished from the hobby and CGC posted a list of suspect books and made buyers whole.

I draw a distinction between a company that makes a mistake and then does the right thing vs one that has a ongoing pattern of suspect activity with no transparency.

That's a sucky surprise.

I was again not clear. I meant that's what people on the CGC board were either calling it or insinuating with their torches and pitchforks overreactions. Maybe I should've used quotation mark? some day I will figure out this whole posting thing but I doubt it.

This brings up a good point. Low dollar stuff in less-than-mint grade is probably pretty safe. It's not going to be restored and they hopefully aren't going to waste their ammunition turning an $8 book into a $12 book. I would assume they used their ammo to hunt bigger prey and in fact probably used the lower dollar books to help build credibility.

I lost confidence years ago when I facilitated an introduction to a potential high-volume submitter. He showed me some of the grades he got on his first submission...lets just say I was laughing and he was glowing. A JIM 89 that he hoped for 7.5 came back 9.0. Anyway, I thought if they will do this just to curry favor with someone paying them $20 per slabbing, what would they possibly do when bigger dollars are at stake? I guess the Terrance Leder story helps answer that question.

@EbaySeller thanks for your 1st hand story, I like facts. I will not be using PGX, but I will still buy them at a good deal. I always look at the comic book not the grade (learned that here).
