Tips for selling off a 100 slab collection?10450

Collector Darkga private msg quote post Address this user
So I FINALLY got around to cataloging all of my slabbed comics books, and I'm looking at about 100 slabs that I may be willing to part with out of my collection. I feel like I know my options, but it's still good to bounce ideas off of you guys.

Priced out at current GPA/sold prices this would be about $10,000 in books. That's an average of $100 a slab, but some are $300+ slabs and others are $30 slabs. I would much rather sell the whole lot and take a hit on pricing rather than slowly selling them piece by piece though.

* I'm thinking ComicLINK would be easiest, but I run the risk of the lesser books selling for like $10 if no one bids.

* Are there any online shops that you guys sell whole slabs lots to?

* What should I expect out of it? 80%? 50%?

* What have you done in the past if you were in a similar situation?

Here are a few nice example books from the for sale list by the way:

If you had a complete list of all the books and looking to "wholesale" them as a lot you may get some interest from the board members here.

Put them up here and let the board members bid on it?

Just a thought

@Darkga comiclink generally do not accept books with an expected sale value less than $300-500

your best option would be to offload it in a mcs auction

You should try here and I would also suggest mycomicshop.com . You can list them on the exchange rather than for auction (if you don't want to risk getting a lower price for the comics) and they will list the comics on their website as well as on Ebay. The commission is also lower than comiclink, heritage and comicconnect. 10% commission on sales less than $300, minimum of $5 commission per sale. 8% commission on sales between $300 to $2999.99 and 6% commission on any sales at $3000 or above. It's easier to just send mycomicshop everything you want to sell unless you plan on selling on forums, craigslist, etc. where you would pay a 3% paypal fee and cost of packaging. With mycomicshop they handle everything and to me it's easier plus there is the bonus of being able to reach an international market that you may not be willing to sell to yourself. You can change your consignment prices as often as you like and choose whether to have them listed on the exchange or at auction. I would suggest using fixed price since I haven't had much luck as a seller at their auctions.

Also, I may be interested in the Alf 48 depending on what price you'd be willing to sell it for.

@Darkga - Similar to what @BigRedOne1944 suggested, you could post a list here on the forum and ask for PMs with offers for them. You'd get higher individual prices than the 50-75% you'd receive for the whole set. Then you could decide what to do with those that don't get any offers - but you might have made more money anyway, so that would just be gravy. What do you have, Harold? You have peaked my interest.

PS - I don't think bidding is allowed on the forum.

Agree with the others, forum first if you want and then MCS. MCS is much better with slabbed books than raw because they can't undergrade them, and they are more likely to accept them for consignment (they might take a particular book at NM if raw but VF if slabbed, for example). And whatever you send them for consignment, you can decide individually for each book if you want to put it in an auction or list it at a fixed price.

I highly recommend that you separate out the "liquid" from the non-liquid. Retail the liquid, wholesale the non-liquid. Otherwise you will be wholesaling everything. If you can get close to FMV for the top half of the books, that makes it easier to swallow whatever you do with the bottom half (liquidate cheap or keep).

I see a few in the OP that I would be interested in.

You should post them on this forum individually (no charge to do so).

After that you could try consigning what is left with MCS, Comic Connect etc. if you do not want to spend the time and effort to list them on ebay.

Completely disagree.

If you resubmit that Marvel Milestone to CBCS, the Dynamic Forces Kirby sig will fail authentication and you will be out a bunch of money for no good reason. Leave it as is.

Thanks for all the input! I'm leaning more on the "sell the bigger books at retail" and then that would allow me to be more flexible on the rest. Also the MCS idea sounds good too. However the right offer on the entire lot would be easiest to ship them all to the same place and be done. Here is the list of 85 books I could let go. I started at 100, but then nostalgia got the best of me on 15 of them, lol.
