CBCS does the right thing: Spawn Thanks! VSP error10399

SpongeBob Comics #1 sells for $991! Joosh private msg quote post Address this user
Hey everyone, here’s the update I put on my Facebook after removing the case cracking video. Long story short CBCS is taking care of it and I’m happy.

Update for all regarding the CBCS graded Spawn Thanks! comic that had VSP Todd McFarlane error.
I just had a great phone conversation with Steve Borock, President of CBCS. He looked into what happened and found it was a clerical error, as simple as which box was checked.
The signature verification did fail; hence why the location of the signature was not captured on the label.
We had great conversation, including the inevitability of quality control issues in a business, especially a business in a service industry in which I am very familiar. This error being brought to light has given CBCS an insight into a weak link in their process, and so now they can take preventive action against recurrence.
We made an agreement on how to make things right and we are both happy. In hindsight I probably could have gotten more out of him, lol. I still plan to use CBCS and will be getting this book regraded for my collection.
I took the video down as it doesn’t show the whole story as it should. If I figure out editing I may make a new version showing the whole story.

Side note for geeks: Steve was gracious in listening to my ramblings of the Newsstand returnable editions of comic books extending well past CBCS’s year 2000 cutoff for designation. He asked that I send him an email to help him understand this relatively new niche of the hobby, which I am more than happy to do. I’ll be posting on the CBCS forum for help gathering information.

One last note is a shout out to Brittany McManus at CGC. She offered to have CGC regrade my Spawn Thanks! book free of charge. I’ve used both companies and want to continue to see healthy competition in the 3rd party comic grading world, it benefits us, the collectors.

It’s been an interesting week, thanks everyone!

Thanks for the update! Glad to hear they made things right- I'm assuming monetarily (He didn't say he'd get Todd to sign it, did he?

This certainly would be better than future submission discounts.

We can create a new Newsstand thread for comics 2002-2013 for marvel and 2002-2016(I think) for DC. I have quite a few 2002+ newsstands

If CBCS added post ‘00 to their newsstand data.... I would most certainly be sending a box. Good on you for mentioning that! 🍺

What is that all about? Why is cgc getting involved?

Great cbcs did the right thing; reaching out and took care of the error to your satisfaction.

I don’t think anyone could get Todd to sign this book, unless they funded his movie, I suppose that might do it.

@hcanes great idea. I’ve got my collection in spreadsheet format with newsstand/direct designation. I have quite a few Marvel 2011-13 and DC 2017 newsies.
Comichron has a very good write up on the last DC newsstand books.
Marvel seems to have ended with published dates of 12/2013.

@Drogio Excellent question. I was reporting my total experience is all. She contacted me before CBCS had, which I thought impressive considering CBCS contacted me within 48 hrs of the video.

@shrewbeer thanks I know I’m not the only one!

That’s odd as well. I wonder what cgc’s motive is to get ahold of that book. Maybe it was just to get your loyalty...maybe it was to keep it out of the hands of cbcs and keep the “bad press” alive and continue to hold it against cbcs as it involves a service that cgc does not offer.

Just very interesting they were so aggressive...

It would be nice if Bleeding Cool would have the integrity to post an update to the story that CBCS took care of the situation, but that would not be in the best interests of CGC.

That's some hard-hitting journalism.

I saw a thank you for sale on ebay with a CGC yellow label. I almost posted it here then I figured everyone has probably seen and it's not news. the Signature was (as i recall) on the cover.

There are yellow labels of this book but not for Todd McFarlane’s signature.

Maybe. But I see it as a waste of time either way..and therefore petty.

CBCS didn’t even need the book determine it was mislabeled versus an error in the sig verification process.

Again, it’s how you correct mistakes more than if you make them. I actually think this is a good story more than bad press. 👍

This will certainly ring true if it never happens again.

As for Brittany's gesture being a waste of time; that can only be said because Joosh declined. If he had accepted, her time would have been well spent.
Nothing ventured...

The cgc and CBCS would have different motivations for offering to reholder/regrade/grade something for free.
