MLJs? Is that for the name Archie Comics had before they became Archie Comics? Or does it mean something else?

I don't know if I'm the only one, but I'm totally not getting any innuendo from that Action Comics cover.

Well imagine you saw it from about 10 feet away. It would probably catch ones attention enough to at least want to know what the front cover dialogue was.

If we're looking for more obscure books, here are a few that I've thought could pop but haven't had great success:

Adventure 327: First Timberwolf- DC's very similar precursor to Wolverine. Never well developed.
Superboy 98: First Ultraboy...an interesting character never well developed.
Marvel Team-up 1: First Misty Knight
Marvel Team-up 65: First US Captain Britain, starting to move.
Captain Marvel 34: Apparently nobody cares how CM got the cancer that killed him.
Swamp Thing 2: First Anton Arcane, still not recognized by Overstreet I believe.
TOS 75: First Sharon Carter doesn't seem to impress people much based on the prices.

There is a variant with a DCU logo. (That was sold as a part of a multi pack I think.) Anyways, that book is a lot harder to come by apparently.

I didn't know about that. I'll be on the lookout for it. Thanks!

They have had it for more than 10 years so I do not think they are shopping it.

Picked up four copies from PASSAIC BOOK CENTER for 26-cents each.
When the next catalog came out they had risen to 60-cents each
and were listed with BYRNE art.

Hey Ted! Yup - that's it, MLJ (named after the three founder's initials) was the pre-Archie superhero titles.
Crazy hot the past couple years. Some of the covers really are pretty damn nuts.

For me it is 1970s and early 1980s TV tie ins + cartoon characters from the 1990s.

The Magazine Sized Charltons with emergency, Space 1999, and the Six Million Dollar Man are more common now than they were but like most magazine books, finding them in high grade is a real challenge. Many of these books also feature Neal Adams covers.

With the characters from the 1990s, its been over 20 years and the Powerpuff Girls are still popular while I can easily see a renewed interest in Pinky and Brain and the Animaniacs. Much like the Batman Animated Adventures and Marvel Star books, they are a challenge to find.

It's at the tail end of the bronze age, but I reckon it still counts ... I've long felt that DC Comics Presents #26 should get more attention. It had a preview insert for The New Teen Titans. As such, it is the first appearance of Raven, Cyborg, and Starfire. Given how popular the Teen Titans are in various media, especially lately, I'd say this one is due for a significant increase.

9.8's are selling for $600 to $700, and 9.6's are under $300.

Of course, speculation at that time was in full swing, and so probably lots of people bought copies to keep and took care of them. Especially since Teen Titans quickly became one of the most popular comics at the time. But still, some important characters. Especially Cyborg.

Agreed, I recently picked up a really nice looking raw copy for under $100. I'm a little surprised that 9.4's remain well under $300.

if the US navy keeps releasing the video of their planes chasing UFO objects of some kind, off the Eastern coast of the US, I see a UFO craze taking root again and UFO covers are always a fringe thing for some collectors anyway.
There are some great ones out there, and the neat thing is so many are vintage books from the 50's 60's and 70's that are underpriced and should command nice prices.

Ufo and Flying Saucers, the run begun by Dell Gold key and etc, features some Whitman covers as well. Many of the covers are quite well done too
I seldom meet go go checks collectors anymore but those are fun too...finding those older DC books in high grade can get tricky.

People used to speculate on the early conans because of the intro of red Sonja and the issue with hidden messages in the art panels...think it was 8?

Seen people high speccing Justice League #1 from 1987 I believe because of Maxwell Lord and the idea he will be in the movies pretty quick.

Brave and Bold 33, cover features Zatanna, Wonder woman and Batgirl....but the story really sets up the entire storyline about the Barbara Gordon crippling and what was done in Killing Joke. Sleeper book if you haven't read it
…..also relates to Oracle, Birds of Prey etc

Wonder woman began in 1941 so 2021 marks her 80th anniversary...upcoming movie apparently features the Cheetah the version introduced in issue 7 of wonder woman title from 1987...the seventh issue might well surpass issue 1 as the one to have before the movie drops!

As stated by a few posts, I also think that pretty much all the SA DC’s are incredibly hard to find in higher grades. Yet even though they are far scarcer, they are worth much less than Marvels from the same time period. Many of these books have zero graded issues (per the CGC census) above 9.2 or 9.4.
Before I started collecting X-Men, I was a huge Legion of Super-Heroes fan. Although their first appearance (Adventure Comics #247] is fairly expensive (no, I don’t have that one - but I remember looking at a mid-grade copy at my LCS back in the early 1980’s that was a couple hundred dollars), later appearances are quite affordable. I do have a copy of a book that has been mentioned here (Action #276) that introduced a number of Legionnaires. I think that issue, and later issues that introduced other new members have the potential to increase in value.
Part of the problem with some of these issues is that the first appearances aren’t even noted on the label of graded copies. I was extremely disappointed when CBCS graded my copy of Adventure Comics #308 last year and the label doesn’t state that it’s the first appearance of Lightning (later Light) Lass.
Anyway if I see higher graded SA DC’s (especially Adventure Comics that feature the Legion) at reasonable prices, I try to pick them up.

Here’s my Action Comics #276:

And my Adventure Comics #308:

On target Ed...when I was buying collections and things weren't nearly as expensive I bought a run of adventure from 300 up till Legion switched to superboy, an on through that until it became Legion etc...included a few of the newer titles at that time as well...most of it was single owner, read and stored. The adventure books are missing half a dozen issues, which I never got around to filling, but many of them are 8.0-9.2 canidates

@Darkseid_of_town - Most of the issues around #300 top out at 9.4 on the census, and some only have a few graded copies in that condition. For example, my #305 is tied with 4 copies on the CGC census for highest graded. And I am always looking for upgrades.

I've been thinking that Neal Adams' Continuity Comics could heat up if the characters were ever resurrected with a decent writer/artist, Hollywood film? Some really cool characters were created, but the writing was terrible and constant delays doomed the entire line.

i remember back in the early 80's the first legion was kind of a big key (and I could be remembering wrong). When I got back into comics a couple of years ago, was surprised how little adventure 247 was fetching. I picked i up a copy for descent deal. I was kind of stoked about it because I was remembering it was a book that I thought I wouldn't own. I do believe it is vastly undervalued

Champions #1 from 1975. Angel, Iceman, Black Widow, Hercules, and Ghost Rider. Hercules' leather pantyhose/stockings are something on that cover.

You can pick up raw copies pretty cheap.
