Autographed cards with a curve or two thrown in10344

back in the nineties working for a comic book store in my spare time, I often collated non sports cards, finished sets, or worked on bin stocking to garner exchange to purchase extra books for my collection.
It was not enough to simply collect the card sets passing by..I decided to take it to that next level, and see how many I could get signed by the various people...I always liked the ladies so I focused on girls on cards, their signatures and how to obtain them.
This was in the early nineties and many of the signatures you are about see shared were living people during that time. Many have gone sadly ….
I will try and share some of the stories that went with them if I can remember

First up Barbara Eden, everyones favorite Jeannie.....the second card is Samantha Fox, the British tabloid model that became a pop sensation here. Third, is Dax, or Terry Farrell if you like from Deepspace Nine...Marina Sirtis, also known as Counselor Troi...and then Cheryl Ladd from Charlies Angels....Majel Barret Roddenberry now deceased...obtained in person in Wichita Kansas by myself , when she appeared locally for a convention. Next up Anette Funicello...always commented on how sloppy her signature appeared until one day an autograph master told me ...you realize most of her last years she suffered from MS and could barely write...yet she insisted on answering all of her fan mail personally right to the end. When people tell you most autograohs are fakes, trust me when I say the experts know their topic and the facts and can easily distinguish a fake done well from a real one. The next card is Linda Sobek, obtained writing directly to her, as I often did. She was murdered in the nineties by a de-ranged photographer named Eric Rathbun, and her story is told in the video, Voice from a shallow Grave. That one bothered me a great deal for awhile. Finally we have everyones Playboy....Hugh the King Heffner..

So this page has some fun ones...first up is Vvette vickers, now deceased, former playmate and the star of the fifties cult classic, Attack of the 50 foot woman.Adult film star Jenna Jameson, next. Jenny Mcarthy of Playboy and the debate centered around austim and getting children immunizations.Lauren Bacall, now deceased.Loretta Lynn country singer now age 87...Pamela Anderson, on an Olivia card...in the late eighties and early nineties before her career took off, you could write pam care of tool time, she was the tool girl and was just catching her moment of fame at the time.....super model Kelly Emberg is next...followed by scream queen Julie Strain.Final card is Brinke Stevens, likely signed in person at Dallas Fantasy Fair where I saw Brinke often.

First up is Leeanne Tweeden...shes been in the news lately with the Me-too movement and some accusations she has made.Shirley Muldowney...she wrote a letter when she signed my cards and demanded if I got rich selling them, she wanted half ...followed by Mary Lou Retton, and then Taylor Dayne, who married Twisted sister Lead singer Dee Dee Synder. Center card is Linda Hamilton, but I am almost convinced this was done with an autopen.Marianne Ross , now deceased next.Actress Sally Fields, and then Laura Dern of course on a Jurassic park card! Finally Pam Dawber, of Mork and Mindy fame.

I have a card book that is over a foot thick and contains somewhere north of 2500 cards all signed like this...cheerleaders, models, actresses, scream queens, film stars sports stars, etc. This was just a more or less random sampling of signatures that looked interesting.....any requests or names you might wish to see? The common element is mostly all are female, and few were intended to be signed cards originally.

Thanks Ed, you were aware of this collection before...and I had never shown them since I did the work years ago. When I told you the story it might have sounded like the ravings of a delusional madman of course.
I had noticed someone throwing shade at the autograph hobby recently so I figured I would share what a real autograph collection might look like...if it did not revolve around comic books....my chosen genera happened to be women on trading cards but autograph collectors all seem to chose a niche or specialized area, be it presidents, former first ladies, or even famous atheletes.

It has been suggested that 25 percent of any given autograph collection is likely fake, so I figured tossing these up for anyone to view might allow people the chance to compare and see if they can find even one in this post.
I offer many of these were collected before the persons passing or before the person became a focus for grifters to attempt to fake signatures from, so it might have been pointless for the fakery to occur.
With some of them I know without question are real, and most of the others I would assume are legitimate. The Samantha fox and jenny Mcarthy cards are certified real insert cards for instance. The terminator card of Linda Hamilton I suspect was done on an autopen machine, because I sent two cards and both are identical...no inconsistent pressure points, loops, etc and even the sideways placement across the card is identical.
Majel Barrewt and Brinke Stevens I did in person with the lady so I have zero doubt there.
Linda sobek, pamela Anderson, and Jenna Jameson , Kelly emberg, Julie strain, and Shirley Muldowney all stuffed the response with signed items, and letters adding to the veracity of the signatures.
Anette Funicello, and leannde tweeden each provided anectdotal evidence of their validity, Annette with her messy writing that I later learned the story behind, and Leeanne, with the address used, her workplace, and circustances of her signing.

Finally you can find comparative exmaples for many of these signatures online, from Hugh Heffner to Barbara Eden,

So you get those who deny they are real and claim autographs are mostly fakes...one of the things you can do is teach yourself how someones signature should look, or what traits it has...I did these today in a quick random search but you can do the comparisons.....
That upper left hand example pretty well kills it for me, on the Pamela Anderson check
Heffs signature is looking pretty tight as well.....
I chose the ones to verify at random of course, but lets take Lauren Bacall because hers would be considerable money now.....here are some multiple samples of her signature.
Her style is quite distinct and doesn't lend itself easily to fakes...
Pam Dawber….hard to impeach my signature based on the samples....
I struggled finding samples of Kelly Emberg but I wanted someone that is perhaps lesser known and less sought out as a signature, former world class model though....also formerly an item with Mr Rod Do Ya think I'm sexy stewart ! They had one child, a girl named Ruby .

I just chose five of them randomly to verify today based on multiple samples found on the internet. Do they appear legitimate to you?

I did take the time to run down Yvette Vickers today as she is deceased, was a former playmate and actress and suffered a sad demise...she was last seen alive in 2010 and found dead of heart failure, April 27, 2011 ….she may have been dead for more than a year before she was found … Rumors that Hugh Hefner paid for Vickers' cremation and funeral were never confirmed, although Hefner issued several statements expressing his sorrow and outrage at her lonely death..another death that bothered me deeply .

one more before work...Yasmine Bleeth...very distinctive signature, a fake should be easy to spot and verify....so how does it stack up?
She has a flair for writing her name in free flowing loops and swirls...and the heart is a singular trademark as well...the final loop of the h always swung back to cross the slash of the H....quite distinctive and easy to recognize …..

From ten thousand signatures I chose a random sampling of 31 to share...across many generas, encompassing sports, racing, adult film, hollywood, singers, models, scream queens and even Heff….I randomly verified half a dozen today and found what appear to be all genuine legitimate signatures.
That certainly is suggestive that not all autograph collectors and collections are riddled with fakes and the entire hobby is bogus, I hope

Just for fun I will throw this one into the thread...some of us have a team we love or hate...mine is the them cowboys..yep I am one of those...grew up during the period when them cheerleaders were the thing, and never got over that fasciantion.

During the late eighties and early nineties I was sent an invitation each year to attend the pre season formal stadium practice for the squad, and at the end of the season I was sent an invitation to a special show presented by the squad for their friends and families. They did this from the eighties to mid nineties before discontinuing it due to other squads sending scouts to grab footage and ideas for their own performances.

One year the show was at the Anatole Toevs? hotel on stemmons freeway?...you Dallas residents can verify if I said that correctly or not.....as it often was held there . I attended and noticed at the front of the theater they had a table set up outside for selling pins, videos, buttons and I noticed a box on the table of old Tour jackets. I inquired what they were , and was told they were squad used tour jackets being sold off....I looked them over, they were definitely worn, used, a bit frayed and had seen better years. Price was 85 dollars....I gave it some thought and at the intermission of the show I spent the money and grabbed one as a keepsake.
At the end of the show the Director announced a special tribute..to the yellow rose members of the squad..girls who served five years or more...she stated 11 girls had the honor since the squad formed.....I did a quick name and head count based on what I knew and realized 7 were on stage or in the audience that I was sure of...including the director, Kelli Finglass, and her choreographer Judy Trammell. After the show, its a common theme for the girls to wander around the area, signing autographs, taking pictures, talking and socializing in their uniforms. the event is heavily attended by alumni so if you know your cheerleaders, you can find many potential opportunities for signatures, etc.
I decided on the spot my quest would be to find the five year elites and have them sign my jacket....today the jacket bears some 54 girls names, all cheerleaders between its founding and that time around say...1994....
Before I quit I believe there were thirteen girls who had earned the honor and I was able to get around nine of them on the jacket.
The jacket bears signatures for some of the better known cheerleaders...Lisa Lignon is a model now....Dorie Braddy Grogan went on to become the director of the Miami dolphins cheerleaders, Tandra Cromer became a public relations specialist for the cowboys organization..Suzanne Michaels , a school teacher, and many of the girls I was friends with...Brooke Wicker for instance is a squad member I was great friends with. Judy Trammell the choreographer, was a five year girl, who had the honor of having her daughter then become a five year cheerleader, I believe. Kelli Mcgonagill Finglass, served the squad for five years then became the director herself.......some great times, good friends and now somewhat vintage in its age..my Squad tour jacket...one of the pictures shows the tag inside the jacket, and how it was used season after season by a new girl..with their names added for posterity...those were there when I bought the piece, and I dont count them in the number of signatures present, although I did find Shelly Roper, whose name is in red, show her I had her jacket, and have her sign it. I keep it displayed in a case alongside a set of poms from the squad, used by Christina Carr, who I think went on to work for the FBI. for me autographs have always gone alongside my comics as a hobby and I have never discarded them.
