I'll try to remember to take the pics and send them. I think all my submissions from Orlando Megacon 2019 had newton's rings.

@eee91 "...Curiously enough, I posted this tip on the CGC boards and the mods deleted it..."

Here is what I stated and believe in an earlier post on this discussion.
"Great easy solution but I don't think CGC is down with explaining how to "fix" their holders."

I think your experience proves this.

How is this not different from CBCS suggesting to use a can of air and blow out the sides of debris or plastic shavings inside CBCS cases?

Not that different but is that as pervasive an issue as the rings?? I've had rings from CGC but never debris from CBCS

My trick to removing newton rings without leaving scratches-

Get a $10 phone opening tool - one that has a grip and two suction cups. Use it on your CGC case near where the newton rings are to slightly pull the two halves of the case apart, THEN insert the paper note card. It's worked miracles for me in terms of removing the newton rings without scratching the case.

Curiously enough, I posted this tip on the CGC boards and the mods deleted it...

Have the newton rings you have fixed come back or have new ones shown up in other parts of the case?

Well I would say the biggest difference is that at least CBCS seems to be trying to own their problem and give you a way to correct it. CGC doesn't even want to discuss or even admit to the elephant in the room.

I wonder if a nice Action 1 unrestored in the higher 8.0 plus range getting graded for auction would end up with Newton's or would they take special care to fix it before sending it out as it may end up in a high profile auction ?

Unless I'm mistaken, I don't believe that CGC has offered up a "solution" like the suction cups, slip of paper, etc. These are all ideas from the boardies. According to CGC, newton rings are acceptable to a point. The solution they offer is to reholder it if it is, in their perspective, excessive.

In your example, CBCS sees that it is a problem and offers a solution that actually solves the issue. The same can't be said about the remedies for newton rings. I understand that the rings can come back occasionally. I've never heard of debris or plastic shavings coming back after they are removed. And I don't believe that CBCS answered that a certain amount of shavings and debris is to be expected and is normal.

So, yeah, I'd say they are different situations in some major ways.

On a few, they came back (in the same spots) but not as badly as they were before. I just did the process again.

This one was shared in the CBCS Collectors Club on Facebook today.

That is beyond nasty

It baffles my mind that this is tolerated by collectors and not immediately rectified by the company. It's like comic book twilight zone.

I doubt they came to their senses. I'm sure they have someone monitoring the social networking sites, including this forum. But between the comments here, on the CGC forum and left on the video page on YouTube, no one was supportive of what CGC said in the video. The reception was very negative. I don't think that they thought they would get that big of a negative response to it.

EXACTLY! And they are probably not going to attempt to remedy the problem until their new press pays for itself.

EDIT - fix the problem early or lose money reslabbing for free. Idiots!

On their own forum, CGC has one of their customers saying that PGX and CBCS don't deal with newton rings so why doesn't CGC fix it. That one HAD to sting!!! LOL!!!

Oh, of course. Marketing, TRUE MARKETING is not convincing customers that they SHOULD use your services, but convincing them that they NEED to use your services. CGC fails.

@eee91 Is that thing big enough to use to reach the center of the slab?

@GAC It seems to me that being a QC person at CGC is probably one of the easiest jobs in America. You don't really do anything if you're letting slabs like that thru.

No, but it gets about 1/4 of the way - which is enough to reach half the slab. If I need to reach other side of the slab, I can use the tool on the other side of the slab to reach the other half.
