Joye Hummel information sought10257

Collector Darkseid_of_town private msg quote post Address this user
It is fairly well established that early in the formulative years of the development of Wonder woman the stories were ghost written by a woman named Joyce Hummel. She was born in 1924 so would be in her nineties by now and I would assume retired and not making any form of public appearances.

has anyone ever seen her do signing or appear in person at cons or shows in the past or even better does anyone own anything she herself signed?

I doubt she would be active in social media, but so far nothing ive found has been useful. I would like to correspond or establish contact with her if I could, but I fear due to her advanced age it might be a fools errand.

Interested in any information or even any examples of her signature or other items related.

Thanks in advance....I only own one of her stories so far unless others were reprinted that I might already have in later issues.

per wiki

"Joye Hummel (Joye Murchison Kelly) (b. April 4, 1924) ghost-wrote a number of "Wonder Woman" stories between 1944 and 1947.She was 19 years old when she began. When William Moulton Marston – the original Wonder Woman writer – became terminally ill, Hummel took over. "

She wrote quite a few of the earliest wonder woman stories, but was required to use his name for the stories rather than her own. In fact her own involvement wasn't fully credited or honored for many years

Many feel she was the inspiration for some of the characters traits and that she may have served as more than just a ghost writer.

Apparently she lives in winter haven Florida. (There was a mention of her flying to her first convention late last year) in 2017 a news article stated that she live is winter haven.

The article authors email is on the bottom of article. Seeing as how she did the interview, she should know how to contact her, if she chooses to.

Keep in mind, this is just a brief search. No guarantees. However, rewards are graciously accepted.... j/k.

I would say signing a book is out of the question. But what would be awesome is a handwritten letter.

Hell I'm tempted to not give you info and do it myself.....

I will follow that and see where it takes me Bronte. Thanks for sharing. I find her story fascinating. Even though people were intolerant of a female writer she managed to help shape and build generations of people using her stories

@Darkseid_of_town

I read the article and wikipedia's page. She seems fascinating and not quite what I was expecting.

Good luck. But please keep me up to date, I sincerely hope this works out for you and would love to hear a cool ending.

By the way, there is one more way of getting her direct address, but I'm not sure if it borders on stalking because she didnt directly give it to you. If you want to know. Private message me.

It always seems like I want the impossible stuff.....that noone else even thinks about or remembers. This really caught a note with me when I won that wonder woman 16 at auction and began picking it apart to learn about it.

It reminds me of another signature pursuit I made once....I wanted a little replica dinosaur, a psittacosaurus, signed by a famous paleontologist, who had discovered the species of psittacosaurus I have mounted in my living room. Paul Sereno….I befriended him on facebook, but no response to messages. I emailed him once and inquired also with no response.
A friend in another forum about dinosaurs, mentioned he worked at Chicago Field House with the exhibits. Paul Sereno haunts that museum as their paleontologist on staff. So I asked the guy if he ever saw Paul around.....he casually mentioned Paul often did lectures at the university he was attending. For a few dollars he could attend a lecture or seminar and ….voila. So I set it up...the guy requested the admission fee, 12.00 and enough to buy his supper at a fast food eatery so I sent him the dinosaur and money and waited.....once he supplied the image and my signed figure I rewarded him with 150 dollar gift certificate to the place he buys most of his dinosaur figures from..

I guess while I am sharing here are a few more....a dinosaur and art sketch done by Ken Carpenter, the man who literally wrote the book on dinosaur eggs....he also discovered many dinosaurs including Sauropelta, the model he signed here....
next image is the tail of another psittacosaurus, this one signed by Forest Rogers. She is the sculpter for the figure, and produced all the dinosaurs made for the Carnegie Museum series.
The final shot is a Nasutoceratops, signed by Eric Lunde, the paleontologist who discovered that species.Imagine chasing multiple hobbies, as hard as you do with comics..the struggle is real !!!

So far no response to my email inquiry....In looking at what to have signed if that ever presents itself, I think I have narrowed it down a dc archives hardback book that reprints some of the wonder woman stories after issue 12 when Joyce began her work......it is still unfathomable to me that a young college girl of nineteen was helping write, then ultimately doing it herself for such a legendary comic character for five years before being replaced....obviously once Moulton passed away a new writer was hired and she lost her place, but what a stunning backstory for a character like wonder woman

Although wonder woman was a tremendous feat. Some of the other stuff that was non comic related mentioned in the article was also very fascinating. In my mind, more so than the comics.

You may want to call the number to see if that lady still works at the business.

I sincerely doubt she will fly anywhere any time soon. Frankly I'm surprised she made it to that one. However, that is just my guess

So an update of sorts, I did as suggested and called the number. I was unable to reach the author who wrote the piece but did speak to Amy the young lady who did the photography for the entire article.

I spoke to her regarding my quest and what I was attempting and she agreed to pass along an email to Joyce for me, with the express comment there may be no response, or an unfavorable one, it would be entirely up for Joyce to decide, but she would be forwarded that email.

This is of course the slow dance you always have to advance such a quest, so lets see what happens next, but objective one, MET

Gratz.

It was very kind of her to do that for you.

To be honest, her setting the expectations was to be expected. Giving someone's contact information without their express permission is somewhat akin to stalking. Hence my hesitancy earlier.

Anyways. Keep us up to date on this quest. If you do get hold of her, kindly ask if she accepts fan mail.

I'd have to reread all the links, but I think she only wrote the text. And did not do the illustrations.

As for the choice of attire. I dont think they could get away with vampirella or notti and nyce illustrations back then.

You can prolly blame some guy without a subscription to Victoria's secret catalog...

With three days gone by and no response it appears a bit discouraging, but she may not check her email daily also...who knows. I am still holding onto hope, but it would suggest my quest has hit a permanent wall

Side note, I keep pondering what I would send if she did accept...I dont think it prudent to risk either of the original books I have, at over 200 dollars per cover, but even a DC archives edition sells for around 50 dollars.

I need to keep looking and hope to turn up some of the issues that might have been reprinted btween issue 12- and 30 excepting issues 22, 23, and 24....there are also a handful of issues of sensation comics she ghost wrote as well.

@Darkseid_of_town

I would say, give it time. The person you are dealing with is of age. As you mentioned, she may have just not checked her email or it went into spam folder.

As for the value of the books being sent to her. Personally, I would not be concerned if they dropped 9 points. If I had a book signed by her, the value would be the historical reference and not the grade of the book. (Money is not everything)

However, if it makes you feel better, she donated a lot of her memorabilia to a museum. That would suggest she knows that things have value and may treat your books with care.

Like the other people that have commented, I sincerely hope this works out.

The two original Hummel books I have are both in the 3.5/4.5 spectrum. She could write her name on the cover in yellow sharpie and I doubt it would move the grade an inch....that isn't really the concern nor how she would handle them.
I worry more for loss in transit or an accident...even a low grade wonder woman issue below #30 is between 2-4 hundred each. If she agrees to sign I am likely to gamble and send one of them as well as some form of reprint for another.
This also has to happen in a way where once she opens the box, she can write her name, place it back in the packing , seal the box , affix the new label, use the possibly pre paid label or buy one using funds provided, hand it to the counter help at the post office and be done.it might even work to provide stamps, in enough measure to cover the package. The more simple and easy it is the more likely results.

and just when hope wavers....I have this today....

Dear Michael.
I am writing this for my wife, Joye Kelly. Notice that her name is NOT Joyce.
She is thrilled that you took the time to write to her via Amy. Joye would be happy to sign your documents. Any charities you favor would be nice, but not necessary on her behalf.

Her mailing address is:

"Omitted obviously out of respect for privacy "
Thank you again for your interest. Stay well and God Bless.

"He signed his name as well but also being careful and trying to respect I omitted that."

I am going to gamble with the wonder woman 16, a reprint annual and a Dc Archives edition book. That will be three items, and I might print and send an image of her from one of the articles posted. I would imagine 4 things might be enough without being rude. I also balance that with the idea this is likely a one time, never again aligning of the stars, given her age and so forth.
