How do you keep track of your comics?10247

Collector Jabberwookie private msg quote post Address this user
I'm looking for some ideas here.

How do you keep track of your comics, and keep a list of what you've got?

Currently, I'm using a spreadsheet, but to say it's tedious is an understatement.

I tried and app call Keycollector, but that just tracks key issues. I tried another called Collectorz, but it requires a monthly subscription.

I've got about 1800 comics, so having an idea of what I've got is important.

How did you solve this problem?

I find having a list of what I'm after is easier to keep than a list of what I have.

That's one of the ones I tried, but it seems I misunderstood the fee as monthly?

What do you like about it, if I may ask?

I'm curious about this. Do you not sell yours or worry about what you have?

I think I see where you're coming from, but knowing what I have is important to me, at the moment.

I'm kind of divvying mine up for my kids, and nephew in case I get hit by a bus or kidnapped by a Skrull or something.

My comics are severely out of order, but I intend on labeling them with barcodes using a Brother Ql-500 label printer.
https://www.amazon.com/Brother-P-Touch-QL-500-Manual-Cut-Printing/dp/B0002T470S

My girlfriend bought me a very reasonably priced bar code reader.
https://www.amazon.com/Barcode-Scanner-BEVA-Automatic-Handheld/dp/B078YNN867

If I get them labeled, I will be able to quickly scan them into a database of my choosing.

Originally bought the desktop version of Collectorz (when it was the one-time price) intending on figuring out which ones: to sell, to slab, were signed (and by who), etc and that's it. Nearly a year later, everything's inventoried, have slabbed 40 issues now, haven't sold one and started collecting again... lol

Still, now that Collectorz is subscription based now, I wonder if it's possible to get different plans, like quarterly or bi-annual, or if it's possible to subscribe only when the inventory needs a 'binge'.

I do sell, but what I sell, I usually have no desire to acquire again. If I made really good money on it, I tend to remember that and look for other issues to resell.

No, I don't really worry about what I have. They sit in boxes in the closet. I have a pretty good memory and can remember what I've bought. That being said, I do surprise myself sometimes when flipping though boxes looking for something else.

Yeah, I'm really not concerned about what happens to my books after I'm gone. Ultimately, they're just things. If I had spent as much time and effort building a relationship as I did a collection, boy howdy.

I use this as well. It is a really good resource to have In the modern age. It is something you can keep on your phone and update as you go along and keep backed up on the cloud. Well worth the $14 I paid for it. Otherwise you are making and updating Excel spreadsheets and who the hell wants to do that more then their day job requires. I know I don’t.

This app was a one time fee of $2.99 and that's it. here's a screenshot of Batman (1940) title on the "Own List" tab.

Following, excellent choice for a thread.
I log a select 5 thousand books manually in a one-note file.
The rest of the collection is mostly books I intend to sell or trade, and I dont waste energy following them closely enough which lends itself to finding books that have gone ballistic , hidden in the boxes all the time sadly

If you don't care too much about the price listings being accurate, go with comicbookrealm.com . Free, web-based, pretty easy to use. You can export to Excel if you really want to.

I use Collectorz/CLZ on both desktop and mobile before it went to a subscription model.

To be clear, I believe the subscription is only needed to make use of various online features, most notably access to the online database, to automatically download creator info and cover art, and automatically download graded book values from GoCollect.

Not insignificant features, admittedly, but if the rest of the software is still usable without it it, it may still be worthwhile to investigate.

I use a spreadsheet on Libra Office. Free knockoff of Excel.
Title, vol, issue, date, quantity owned direct and newsstand, publisher, and notes (printing #, cover, signed, graded. I only add condition comments if I think they are worse or better than that book’s typical condition, or are graded.

I figure if I ever get serious about selling books I can send my collection via email to prospective buyers.

That makes sense. I’ve done the same thing and been shocked at some the comics I didn’t know I had.

Thanks for the laugh at the end. My coworkers think I’ve gone crazy, but I actually laughed out loud!

To everyone else, thanks for all the suggestions. Time for a little research.

7985 books not including books still to be read/entered in system - so really just over 8k books.

I use good old excel -mainly because this is how I've been tacking things since before the inter web was around

Have a master sheet with all books
a different sheet with current year purchases - at the end of the year I add those issues to the master and start new.

A sheet with sold issues to subtract off total and from master list

And a sheet with want issues.

every year or two I re-save as a new file and every year or so I put a copy in google docs (just incase something happens to my file)
