The book has arrived safely! And ahead of schedule, to boot!
I am still figuring out the livestream stuff but I promise I’ll crack it out live.
Good news right away is that if the “substance” can be dry cleaned off the cover, this book is a 9.8 contender. There’s nothing else for defects.

Does anyone have a recommendation for videos to watch for cracking a CBCS case? This’ll be my first.

I don’t know about a video @Joosh but I watched it done once by a cbcs rep Cody Lockwood. He had a set of pliers that was as wide as the tabs on the top of the case and basically prayed them off. He also used a box cutter to then open the Mylar liner. Last thing he recommended was to slide a board in to take the book out, apparently the Mylar has been known to cut books if not taken out slowly. I swear he did it in less than five minutes and made it look easy but a razor blade was a quarter inch away from a book. 😟😵. If no one finds that vid for you hit up Cody at Lockwoods loot on Facebook, he’ll be more than happy to help out.

The only difference I witnessed was the sides of the inner well were cut also so it hinges open easier and the book doesn’t have to be slid out. But that’s if you trust yourself to make those extra cuts I suppose.

@HeinzDad I actually met Cody once, still have his card. Thanks for reminding me. I've got a few different pliers to choose from.

@flanders, I watched the video, thanks. Looks pretty straightforward. I think I'll use a steel ruler and utility knife blade to cut the sleeve open on 3 sides. I'd rather not have to slide the book at all.

Use a gerber shard. Opens cbcs cases in seconds with zero damage.

edit: I see that now in the video posted above. Yep. Same tool.

Just another reason I don't do signatures. The autographed world has been ripe with fraud for decades.
I suspect that these verification services never were all that reliable and basically nothing more than a money grab.

I remember reading an article about the rampant fraud involved with collecting autographs and the real experts that stated "If you have an autographed collection of any size, count on 25% of them being fakes"

@BigRedOne1944 The chances of fraud go down dramatically if you get the signature yourself. Although I know you don't much care for them that way either.

@BigRedOne1944 If you bought a lot of comics and this happened to be signed with several others that were undisclosed in the listing would you bother to have it verified or be content with some chicken scratch and a slightly miswrapped cover?

Having been an autograph collector for some years and having dealt with many of the issues surrounding the hobby I learned fast and hard the market at lower tiers does contain a lot of fakes, but in the high end and serious marketplace its a fairly well understood art and lacks little for authentication especially in modern times.
A real expert at autographs wouldnt say count on your collection being 25 percent fake...he would inquire its province, how it was obtained , (if in person or by mail or via purchase) and determine its entire background before issuing an opinion. If collected by mail signatures have a good chance of being secretarial, or done by a proxy signer...as many of Pamela andersons were onoce she married Tommy Lee. If collected in person at a given timer period in proximity to the source of the signatures it becomes far more likely they are legit
You dont know until you know is the term best used....if you spend the proper efforts and resources you can have any signature rather thoroughly documented and authenticated.....there are also a number of methods of faking signatures that can pose a serious test even to the best of authenticators and experts...tracing, for instance can be done , or using a tracing arm...etc.
Its a tough hobby and the best answers require the most expense...but many signatures are so common and easily obtained there is little point in faking them .
Still some peace of mind in pulling elusive grail signed cards from various collector card packs....

Lets just say that I obviously do not have much faith in the autograph sections of any hobby, Although I do own some, I simply do not have any faith in the verification process likely being run by an hourly employee.

I have to believe there are many fakes and miscues, such as the McFarlane sig that have beat or slipped past the verification system.

Chicken Scratch and Mis-wrapped? Now that's a double Garbage book to me... but knowing there are plenty of fish in the sea that are willing to part with their money for these books I may very well send it in to obtain the monetary value that comes with slabbing(the only reason to do so)

makes sense, I wondered. I hope its really signed for his benefit, but something tells me it wont be and then the entire scenario will become null and void once he cracks it open

his sig varies greatly. There's a thread on CGC from 2 or 3 years ago about this particular sig style. Seem to have been 92-94 range that it looked like this.
