My grail was purchased. I'm considering selling it. Heck, I'm considering selling off a bunch of my collection.

Realistically attainable, or regardless of whether or not I need to win the lottery? I ask because I will likely never own a Superman #1 or Batman #1. A nice, crisp, Spawn #1 CGC 10/Gem Mint is at the top of my list (if one ever goes up for sale). A high-grade Iron Man #1 is up there. Captain America #100. Thor #126. Incredible Hulk #1. Eerie (1947). |

I am currently selling my high grade bronze collection for high grades (8.0 or better)of Doctor Strange 169, Thor 126, Captain America 100, Incredible Hulk 102, Submariner 1, Ironman 1, Amazing Spider-Man 96 (the no comic code stuff to me is interesting)and lastly an incredible Hulk 181 in a 7.5 range. I'm in no rush.

Quick question to you self graders. What affect if any on the grade does distributor overspray have? I grade by the Overstreet Grading book and haven't found any mention of this overspray. Thanks Troops!

Overspray doesn’t affect the grade at all I believe just eye appeal

Thanks Cap! (Don't worry your secret identity is safe with me!) It's my understanding that distribution spay was used on comics before being sent to their customers (Candy stores, News Stands etc.) so if they didn't sell, the distributor would be able to verify their books were being returned for a credit. Are there any other explanations for the distributor overspray on older comics out there? In search of the truth...nuff said.

I had a shop owner mention that the spray may have been used to color code when unsold stock needed to be returned. Could make sense. I've seen blue, brown, magenta, green, and yellow sprays.

I have heard that too Studley. Meaning the store owner would spray the books himself so the returns couldn't be resold. Like how many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll Lolli pop? The world may never know! Jesse, some more books up your alley!![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Distributor over-spray would keep a comic out of the Mint/Gem Mint range. That's about it.

The top edge nice straight clean looking color stripes were monthly codes used to keep track of books in stacks for retailing, vs the heavier type splashed on overspray for returns, often blue in color.

Thanks Darkseid! Since both types were part of doing business, is it safe to say they don't affect a books grade other than appeal?

I wanted to get IH 1 and AF15 for Stan to sign but, well, you know. Then I was just going to save up and buy both and they announced the 2022 Corvette ZO6. I may never be able to get those two for my “Scrooge McDuck’s money bin”. Oh and I’ve been looking at showcase 22. |

Instead of returning the entire leftover comic to the distributor, the store owner returned the top third of the cover for credit...the blue ink was applied to prevent resale of the "remainder" copy. ![]() (From BATMAN #253) What was never intended to be resold but as you see, it was. ![]() OO mm |
