Secret Wars 810025

Collector Cowabunga_Kyle private msg quote post Address this user
I have a set of Secret Wars 8 books from around the world and absolutely no idea how to appraise their value.

It's not easy to reconcile the value of the foreign editions with their grade vs their scarcity. Almost all of them are signed and graded. A few Stan Lee signatures. The majority of the homage covers and some original art and prints.

Anyone have any idea how I might begin to assess the value of this set?

Here are individual photos of the lot of them Secret Wars 8 Set

Are you wanting to sell or just get an idea of what they are worth?

@DrWatson I guess that depends on the value. I do not want to get rid of this set, but I have to pay my property taxes so if the value is above a certain point I'll look for a collector to sell them to.

I might contact an auction house to see what they think. Maybe Heritage...

@Masochism I know you are in the FCC Magazine group on facebook. I'd think Matthew and the group could give you a fair market value on them. Some of them may even be rare and command a premium. It's a hot enough book that there should be a decent demand for it out there.

@DrWatson I wouldn't even know where to begin with Heritage. I don't even have an account. I'll make one just to brush up on their site, but like I said I wouldn't even know where to start.

@Jesse_O I'm looking for resources I don't know about. I was hopping to broaden my own scope of knowledge. I usually buy foreign books, not sell them.

Got ya!!! I don't know if you've checked out the Society of International Comic Collectors forum, but we are trying to build that. By we I pretty much mean me and a couple others that help out occasionally. It used to be the FCC forum, but Ken gave it to me to run. It's been pretty dead in there lately, but I'm trying to make it a spot with resources for the international comic collector.

Ken posting shirtless videos might not have been a good idea.

The only way you are going to really know what these are worth is to put them up for sale in an unreserved auction.

eBay would get you paid the fastest. And eBay has an international reach. But auction venues like ComicLink, ComicConnect, MCS and Heritage do I believe attract a more mature, discerning collector crowd. They can also cost less than and be less work on the sellers part than eBay as well. But sometimes months to get paid.

While it's understandable you would like to have a good idea of the value of the set of books upfront, you probably seek the impossible. Collecting of foreign editions - while having grown the last few years - is still very much a small niche in the hobby. There are not near as many serious collectors of foreign editions, there are no price guides and it's unlikely anyone has ever sold something similar to your set. Probably never, but certainly not recently.

As Jesse said, it's a hot book right now, so it's unlikely that there will be a much better time to sell them anytime soon. A better time to sell them MIGHT be ten years from now IF collecting foreign editions is something that becomes mainstream with collectors.

They also don't accept Discover. Who doesn't like money in a widely accepted form?

Well, at ComicLink, sure, it can take a couple months. At MyComicShop it's usually a couple weeks. Worse at auction, as some people take up to a month to pay them. But after MCS gets paid, you get paid the next week.

Not sure about Heritage. I think that 5k limit is way wrong. It must be ... they sell stuff for less than that all the time. But I haven't actually used them. They often get premium bids, but they take a BIG chunk of the end price.

@xkonk
CGC apparently doesn't take Discover card either. A submission for a client just a week ago wouldn't go through using their Discover Card. And I've seen on their chat forum in the past that CGC only takes (as far as credit cards go) Visa, MasterCard and American Express.

@Masochism Check with Tim Bildhauser. He's pretty much an authority on these things.
