Writing a screenplay. Need your help.9511

Collector XxSpideyxX private msg quote post Address this user
Guys,
I’m writing my next screenplay for a feature length movie and I need your help.
I don’t want to reveal the full movie yet, but it involves comics and grading. Anyway, does anyone have a real-life (or fictional) example of a comic that was mistaken for another and/or stolen/missing and recovered? For example, one comic swapped for another at a trade show by accident or on purpose? Or perhaps a signing gone wrong where the wrong item was returned? I need a unique/solid example for this to work.

I've always thought that the original art fiasco was interesting. In that one, CBCS authenticated an artist signature and noted that a sketch was on the cover. That is different than saying that the sketch and art were done by the same person. The way it appears to have happened is that someone got artists to sign blank sketch covers. From my understanding, this is not unusual. Some people collect only signatures and find the sketch covers a great way of getting either multiple signatures on a single comic or as a way to get a great, larger single signature. Regardless, one person than either drew or had someone else draw characters that the artist is famous for on that cover. Then they submitted them to CBCS for signature verification. The signatures were authentic and verified. The artwork never was!!! But because many people don't stop to look at things carefully, these slabs could be sold as "comic is sketched on and is signed by XX". While not a lie, it implies that the artwork is done by the person who signed it!! In this case, PGX was somehow involved also.

I haven’t found a detailed article on this, but yes. That would be an excellent example.

Hmmmmm....I kind of like this. I may consider ways to simplify this scenario to some degree since I need to appeal to a wide audience not necessarily familiar with the sketch/signature subsection of this collector market. Any other ideas/examples?

Switching labels is an old scam. I'm not sure it can be done with any company now, but you definitely could with the older CGC slabs.

Mislabels are always fun. Here is a sample from CGC. The label states that it is the original 1939 edition and not the reprint. The notes are correct, but the label is wrong. Something like this could lead to some interesting consequences.

I've had two made into feature length films. The first was a "major" hollywood picture, the second was straight to streaming

Jesse, I appreciate all these. Please keep any other ideas coming! I'm looking specifically for a deliberate swap/replacement as opposed to a technical error. The sticker swap is a good example, so thank you!

In the early '70s, DC reprinted several key comics (Action 1, All Star 3, Detective 27 and Superman 1 come immediately to mind) as Famous First Editions. These comics were slightly larger than the originals but otherwise identical, except for an outer cover identifying them as Famous First Editions. Many cases reported of people removing the outer cover and selling the reprint as the original.

Marvel is selling facsimile editions now (for example https://www.midtowncomics.com/product/1842095). I assume it's just a matter of time, or already happening, until people take parts to replace damaged original copies or just try to pass the whole thing off as original.

Before I start this I just want to say, I don't mean to insult anyone on these forums because I like everything and everyone I've dealt with including buying comics from you folks.

I can't believe anyone believes this video, it's the worst acting I've ever seen. This person is obviously lying, who doesn't mention the title of his book and issue, since he is so proud of owning it,he only mentions the fact that it's a 1st printing. He mentions this before he cracks it open, after he cracks it open and right as he opens the book. I would be all over the book title and issue, his overacting once he notices that it is not his book is silly. I don't know what really happened but this is what it looks like, he sent in a 3rd printing saw that it was labeled a 1st printing and decided he hit pay dirt. Please don't say this can't happen, I just got back my first CBCS submitted book from CBCS & it being a variant it has a different cover artist than the 1st print. The label not state it's a variant therefore it states the wrong cover artist. I've seen may examples of company mistakes. CBCS has said they will make it good, I plans on dropping it at SDCC to be fixed along with other books to be graded (I am not dismayed). But who believes this stuff. at first I thought it was clearly faked and no one believed it until I started checking out the comments from CGC's forums. WOW! I admit I don't know what really happened here but it is not what it seems. Crazy stuff!

The real story here is how any one believes this and how it biased the comic book collecting society against a company.

If you have reasons for hating PGX, were good, I respect your reasons but this shouldn't be the horse you back.

@sportshort lots of people make videos of themselves opening up slabs and resending to other companies to be regraded. It's nothing new.

Whos too say it didn't happen? Or maybe he did send in 3rd printing and seen they labeled it a 1st print. But he did know the back interior covers were different. Did he research to begin with before filming or did he actually have 1st print?

The original poster of this thread asked us for stories. I provided one. If he wants to use it in his movie then by all means he will and can do the legwork and contact the guy that posted the video to get the full story. Then he can see if it's legit or not.

Reguardless, the key words that @XxSpideyxX used were "real-life (or fictional)."

I agree that people do this all the time have seen many videos, but to begin with, this is my first printing, without saying the title of the book or the issue number, which I think is very important. I think I wouldn’t be able to help myself but say that several times, instead of first print, first print, first print. That seems crazy to me. So I don’t really know what happened but it certainly looks fishy and his acting is terrible but I could easily be wrong I just don’t feel that that’s the case here. And just for the record I’m not being critical of you or your submission I think it’s a great story I just think that the story is somewhere other than where the video portrays. Interesting story though

Here's a link to an archived thread we have about Danny Dupcak. You'll need to check the different links, but if you need a nefarious villain, here's a real life example!!! I've debated about pointing him out to you because he doesn't deserve any recognition in my opinion. But as a case study, I think there is merit into looking at his history.

I'm sorry to be vague. I don't wish to share specifics at this time b/c I prefer to remain somewhat anonymous. But I will promise that if this project is picked up, you will be the first to hear the news and I think you may recognize at least one of the titles

Follow up question:
I can’t find any pictures or videos of the inside or systems if the grading process at CBCS, CGC, or any other professional grading/encapsulation companies. Does anyone know of any media that shows some of these locations in terms of storage, offices, equipment, etc? Do they offer private tours?

These are the only two photos that I have found to exist. They are years old now and show someone at CGC encapsulating a comic. When CBCS started up, I had talked to Steve Borock about them possibly making a walk through video of the process. He said that idea had been talked about and that they had it marked as a future goal. I don't know if private tours are available. I'd suggest you contact CBCS via email and ask if something can be arranged if you are serious about that. Also, I sent you a pm earlier today in regards to another lead for you.
