"This Really Grinds My Gears!!!" open complaint thread8928

Moderator Jesse_O private msg quote post Address this user
A thread to just voice your frustration about anything comic book related!!!

I'll start. Retailers exploiting FCBD

FCBD isn't even here yet and Midtown has the Avengers and Spider-Man comics for sale at $8.99 each!!!! You can also get one free copy (with a purchase), but you can't specify what you want. I don't expect that you will end up with either Avengers or Spider-man if you do that though.

MCS has two options for online buyers according to today's newsletter. You can get one, of your choice, free comic for every $5 purchased, or you can get all 53 plus the DC's Year of the Villain #0 for $49.99. While this is a lot better than Midtown, I really don't want all 53 and I've already paid .25 for a DC's Year of the Villain #0. I'm still hoping that I can find a shop where I can order the 12 I want for a good price. But when I saw what Midtown was doing, it just "ground my gears'!!!!

Hmmm

Was this for their online retail?
I plan on stopping at one of their brick and mortar locations before I head to see Endgame. We will see what happens. Fingers crossed.

I had no way of knowing that 9.8 graded copies signed by Adam Hughes weren't what you were looking for. drchaos private msg quote post Address this user
No one agreed with me on the other thread but I will repeat my pet peeve of comic stores putting stickers on the FCBD books.

They know better than to damage books like that.

God forbid some kid should get a free comic book only to learn years later that it might actually be worth something.

I bought a White Widow 2.5 FCBD after contacting the comic shop that was exclusively going to have them and being told that "there will be an extremely limited number actually available for free" (it's within driving distance to pick it up). Which, honestly, makes sense as they paid for production of the entire book; just weird they were originally marketing it as a FCBD comic. My LCS, if you miss FCBD will have them for sale at $0.75/each the day after FCBD. That always bugged me. I get they paid for them, but c'mon...one day?

I dunno if it’s allowed but my lcs is offering unstamped for 5. Aside from the two people I bought from on here no one know where I live, lol, so he won’t get busted. I’m only paying for my 3 favorite titles but I’ll probably get them stamped also when I blow my wallet there.

What grinds my gears is when I get a new pack of bags and or boards one is slightly larger or smaller than usual and my books look like the letter U.

@Hcanes I'd LOVE to know what they do in their shop!!! Please let us know.

A few years ago, I could order them online for .25 each on Saturday morning. I wouldn't even mind paying a buck or two each for the ones I want. I wouldn't even care if they were stamped. But I know that come Monday, they'll all be hawked at $4 each or better. This is when it really sucks to not have a local comic book store!!!

@HeinzDad I can't say that I've had that happen, but I know I've ended up with extra bags or extra boards even though both packs were supposed to have 100 each.

This came up in the other FCBD thread, but the point of FCBD is to get people into comic stores. The stores pay for the books then give them away for free. I understand that not everyone has a local store, or that sometimes a free comic might become worth money down the line, but that's strictly a complaint for people who are already collectors. And they are not the intended audience for FCBD. If a store wants to sell those comics online (presumably to people who are collectors, since they're shopping online at a comic website) or slap stickers on the book (to advertise their store, which we want more people to go to so that the hobby grows and stays healthy), I don't see a problem.

But @Jesse_O when I go to Midtown's website it says FCBD "Poster", not "comic book".

LMAO!!! I stand corrected!! On my computer, the listings are cut off after the names (photo follows). I have my screen at 125% so I can read it from my recliner about 10 feet away. Plus, it seems that the free copy that you can't specify is ALREADY specified (if I had looked closer). It is a free copy of "Comic Shop News FCBD 2019". In my defense, I thought it was a listing for news about FCBD 2019, especially since there was no image. My apologies to Midtown!!!! My thanks to KaptainMyke for pointing that out. At least my blunder led to a new generic thread. LOL!!

Just to clarify, this is a copy/paste from what I got from MCS in their newsletter.

Iconic writer Dan Slott joins us from Midtown Comics Downtown on Saturday, May 4th to celebrate Free Comic Book Day! This is an open signing and we recommend showing up early, just to be safe. Purchase of any Dan Slott book required to attend. Limit 3 items signed per attendee. See you there!

MONDAY, MAY 6TH ONLINE

All FCBD titles will be posted online at approximately 11:00AM EST on Monday, May 6th and will be offered while supplies last. We recommend that you order early. Please be aware that while the books are free, there is a handling fee per book.

They are also offering store exclusives.

Meanwhile, Graham Crackers Comics are doing 3 free comics online on Saturday, just pay for shipping. The interesting thing about this, is that they have FCBD comics from previous years. They are priced right now, but they will be free on Saturday only. I chatted online with them to get all the details.

Some open item complaints....

1) Foul Poles in baseball are Fair Territory
2) When you buy something off ebay and they give you a tracking number super quick and you get excited but 4 days later it still hasn't shipped.
3) Having my daughter's Acrobatics class Saturday morning, then son's baseball game, then daughters softball game all in a row so I cannot go to FCBD. But I have an awesome LCS that is pulling books for me and the kids.
4) Buying my targeted comic at Comicon that I have been hunting for well over a year and then within a month a copy finds its way into my LCS.
4b) I did not get the green light to purchase the second copy
5) Having to manage assistant coaches for my kids' teams just as much as the kids themselves.

Just variants...always variants...always grinding my gears... it's just ridiculous...have 1 cover...have a regular print run...let the market decide if they want to buy a book...

That and I'm still waiting for issue 2 of Daredevil The Target

...but then again, I'm a f*cking hypocrite too, because I was excited about the Dceased movie homage cover, but I justified it because they are regular price

Liefield also, he really grinds my gears too

What I'm here to vent about is the fact that we are still waiting for more Miracleman.... yet marvel keeps putting our garbage titles every month...

At least there is still hope for it being released 2019 !

I'm sort of at the point (age?) in my life whereby I just accept that there will always be nonsense and B.S. in the comic industry and choose to just walk away from it; not buy it; not buy into it; not support it, etc... if I don't like it.

After all these years I think I finally understand that getting upset just stresses me and doesn't do much of anything else. Using my wallet does.
Examples:
Variants - I don't buy them
Ridiculous price increases on comics - I cut back
Poor Ebay buyers/sellers - I block them
FCBD exploitation - I don't support that store
Comics written by a writer who i consider a $%&%$ - I don't buy them
etc, etc. etc.

Gotta love capitalism and the power of the dollar.

Ebay. I work so much lately that I just cant get out to flea markets or distant shops so Im always on ebay. Its like with music, since everything went digital the *experience* of going out and finding new music is almost gone. Same with ebay, its just not as satisfying as finding that Kirby gem under a pile of Casper comics.

I also have an ebay gripe...

There is a perception among buyers(at least ones I have encountered recently) that CBCS is an inferior product and holds less value, and therefore they want a discount. Don't know if others have encountered this but I've been selling a lot of "best offer" recently and I've had people say "that's as high as I'll go on a cbcs book"
