Swamp Thing TV Show - Production Shut Down Early8847

Collector Paulbg2000 private msg quote post Address this user
Looks like people are probably going to wait and see how much Disney+ takes of the market with the content they're going to put online. Read in another article that the streaming resources and technology owned by Fox were one of the main reasons for Disney buying them (as much as we'd all like to hear it was for Fantastic Four etc...)

The locally filmed television series “Swamp Thing” has found itself bogged down by some unexpected news.

The currently in-production project is being shut down earlier than expected as its producer, Warner Bros., evaluates the future of its DC Universe streaming service, on which the series was scheduled to premiere May 31, according to several sources within the local industry.

Actress Virginia Madsen confirmed the shut down Wednesday morning on Instagram with a post that read: “I’m beyond sad. What a terrible decision. We have been cut to the core by those who have never set foot into the Swamp. And despite the rule I am going to use the hashtag. #swampthing.”

The post was deleted minutes later.

Local crew members were notified of the unexpected development Tuesday night, and were told the project would wrap production on episode 10 and then halt as writers and producers rewrite an ending. Initially, the show was scheduled to film 13 episodes through May.

It is unclear when that new ending would be shot in Wilmington, though several more days of reshoots for previously filmed episodes are expected.

The series has made significant investments in the region, estimating it would spend around $85 million locally on its entire first season, according to film grant applications filed with the state.

Honestly, I think something else is going on. News that Disney was launching Disney+ broke like 2 years ago. Everybody with a brain expected them to pull their content off of Netflix and Stars to make it exclusive. Talks of a live action Star Wars shows have been talked about since Disney bought Lucasfilm. Doesn't take a genius to figure out that they would put them on Disney+.

All this had to be known to the execs at Warner Bros before they ever greenlit the DC Universe much less Swamp Thing. So to say that Disney is launching Disney+ this year, like it's something new and the reason Swamp Thing is being paired down feels a little off. I guess they may not be getting as many subscribers as they wanted, but the service has only been live a few months.

Possibly but didn't Disney already own BAMTech?

EDIT: I just read the article you posted. It seems to indicate that it was Fox's content Disney was after, to add to their existing content, in order to make a more attractive streaming service..

>>>By 2021, the streaming service will be a formidable rival for other streaming networks, most notably Netflix and Amazon Prime, airing new content as well as having access to the Disney back catalogue and the complete library of Fox assets.<<<<

@PixelPanda144 They purchased BAMTech as a platform for their streaming service. I skimmed the other article Paulbg2000 referenced. They were looking at FOX for their content to stream.

I just read to article as well and came to same conclusion.

I thought buying BAMTech a few years back was a brilliant move. They were one of the few companies that really knew to stream, and since they cut their teeth with live sports they had to work out the kinks quickly...

I doubt DC / Warner are changing plans simply due to Disney also creating a streaming service. There are lots of streaming services now ... it's the new new thing. There must be something else going on. Probably, very few subscribers. I mean, what does DC streaming have? Like, four or five shows and nothing else? It always seemed very strange to me, that they would launch a streaming service with almost no content.

Is that how CBS all access works? All I know about it is, it has Star Trek Discovery, and there was something else coming out soon (Twilight Zone?) but I don't remember what. Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, all have TONS of content. So I'm not sure what the thinking there was.

But I didn't sign up for DC streaming, so I don't know ... do they have more stuff and shows than I am aware of?

Must be not enough subscribers.

What was on tap at DC streaming anyway?? (not "available" in Canada).

I know Titans and Doom Patrol (love Doom Patrol) would assume they would also have the DC cartoons (not even sure what they are - last DC cartoon I watched was Super Friends in the 80's) and possibly the horrible DC movies (which they should pay us to watch!!)

Too bad, would have loved a Swamp Thing or a rebooted Constantine even the other 'Dark' Justice people like Zatanna or a really dark Spectre show

Maybe DC should just give up on TV/Movies.
Going to see Shazam this weekend - pretty sure my 11yr old will like it but most DC movies since I was a kid have been a let down for me. TV?? Liked Flash and Legends of Tomorrow but never got into Arrow or Super Girl and then they all got pulled from any cable channels that I get - are these still on the air even??

I'm not a subscriber, so I don't know what all it has for sure, but it is supposed to have both the shows and the online DC comics library. To my mind, that's a benefit over the separate Marvel Unlimited and Netflix/Disney+/other streaming video service option. If I were enough of a DC fan to be reading the comics online, I would subscribe in a second and consider any video content to be a nice bonus.

I'm a DC fan and most of the movies in the last few years can't compete with Marvel. However, I've yet to see a Marvel tv show (Agents, Daredevil, etc) that I could stomach for an episode or more. On the other hand, the DC TV shows kick Marvel's butt.

I love Arrow and Flash, but Arrow is admittedly a bit darker...

All of the DC shows are still on free over-the-air tv and the (also free) CW app, but I think this is Arrow's last season.

I don't have DC Universe so I don't know what else is on the service.

Boy, the executives at Warner just don't know what makes a good superhero movie. They emphasized all the wrong things for building up to Justice League. They desperately revamped Aquaman during production to try and make it more like marvel movies (and ended up with something that did well at the box office, but was ridiculous in terms of character and tone). And they fought with the director of Wonder Woman about what turned out to be literally the best scene in the movie. Now Flash and Cyborg movies are in limbo, and deservedly so.

And now I just looked up the Wikipedia article on the streaming service and read this: "In January 2018, a Superman prequel series titled "Metropolis" was announced, focusing on Lois Lane and Lex Luthor."

I know what they were thinking. "Gotham" did so well! Let's do it again, but with Superman! We can call it ... "Metropolis!"

Idiots. No one cares about a show about Lex Luther and Lois Lane. They aren't very interesting characters. The Joker is interesting. Riddler and Penguin and Catwoman, and the whole rogues gallery are interesting. Their origin stories could be fascinating ... the precursors to all these insane villains? That's a potential gold mine of interesting.

But Lex Luthor? He's not insane. He's not fun. He's just an assh*le.

Anyway, maybe Metropolis won't suck. (It's gone back into redevelopment, though, which is a bad sign.) It's just tiring, though. Warner Brothers execs represent the worst impulses of Hollywood, learning all the wrong lessons from past successes, and past failures. They are children who can't understand why every meal isn't chocolate cake.

I do have dc unlimited, and it is a good service. has the classic shows like batman the animated series and other bat animation. most of the other animated from years past. titans, doom patrol which if awesome. young justice, over 10000 or so of their comic book library. the animated movies. and episodes of dc news type minis. but I did win this for a year too so I do not pay yet. and the live action movies like reeves superman and such also. I like it though I am more of a dc person too.

Here's a great analysis of the difference between DCU and Marvel.

Here's another one ... a little drier, but still good.

First Look Teaser - still says May 31

https://www.cbr.com/dc-universe-swamp-thing-first-look-teaser/

"A source close to Warner Bros. Television told CBR the number of Season 1 episodes was reduced to 10 from the original order of 13, as a result of “creative decisions.” Swamp Thing will premiere May 31 on DC Universe, as previously announced."

It's because of a tax break error. In North Carolina, they were promised a $40 million rebate which was a large majority of the budget for the first season. NC discovered the error and wanted to adjust it to $14M.

WB said that'd be paying way too much without that extra $26M so they said "we're done".

Titans...meh...it was ok.....but I want Swamp Thing and Doom Patrol all day long!!! oh and Preacher!!

DC - your movies for the most part are misses but your TV or streaming or whatever are mostly hits - get your act together people!!!

this was a loss for all of us I think, it seemed like a good series, and I was rather fond of Crystal Reed as Abby Arcane...

I was reading somewhere that it wasn't the tax breaks that caused DC to fold, but rather the realization that the cash intake vs overall expense, was just not going to work.....apparently they thought it would have more drawing power on their streaming services.

Marvel is the king of movies but sucks at tv shows. DC is the king of tv shows but sucks at movies.

These 2 really should get together.

@Darkseid_of_town is a little more correct. I believe it wasn't a tax issue but more of a streaming issue. Warner wants its own main streaming service to bundle up HBO and Sesame Street with DCU but the problem is they are stuck in a merger with AT&T right now so everything is in the air. A source involved in the production said there was chatter on set that WarnerMedia was considering folding DC Universe into its own upcoming streaming platform, which will also include HBO and Cinemax.
