Feeling a little down today8786

Collector bige31 private msg quote post Address this user
Just found out late last night after going through some of my comics that my detective comics 359 first appearance of Barbra Gordon as batgirl has the centerfold detached. It’s graded a 5.0 by CBCS but I don’t know it was like that when I bought it 3 years ago. I don’t mind a mind grade but I at least wanted it “intact”. I’m sure some people here don’t care but for some reason it’s a guy punch. Just felt like venting.

I hear you. Always go through ups and downs when you buy something and it isn't quite what you thought it was, or the rare occasions where you buy something and it's better than you thought.

I went through that bummed feeling too when I found out i bought a book that was a pence copy. I thought it had zero value. But come to find out, through the kind folks on this board it may not be worth as much as its American counterpart it still has value.

Your book is not scarred with the dreaded purple. So you should have a chance at selling and repurchasing your desired book.

Hi
Sorry to hear that
i'm confused: How did CBCS grade it a 5.0 With CF Detached?

Or without note. Does this mean you cracked it out, or does it mean you subbed it not knowing it had a detached centerfold and that's how you found out?

@Bronte that’s kinda what I thought about doing. Selling it and purchasing another one.

@Stantheman I. Believe that’s why it received a 5. It displays beautifully. However the back cover is very dirty and has a water spot on it.

@Stantheman I bought it graded not knowing that it said it on the cover. I scanned the QR code to see if a press and clean could help the comic and that’s where I saw those dreaded words. And I flipping it to the front and right under the grade said centerfold detached.

If the viagra is working you should be well over a 9.8. xkonk private msg quote post Address this user
A 5.0 with a detached centerfold is great. I thought you automatically topped out at a 3.

I understand how you feel though. I would rather have a few dings on the cover than a perfect cover but know there's a page loose/missing.

@bige31 I see, I would be upset too!
I didn't know a book could get a 5.0 with a CF Detached! Seems too high of a grade for that!
Don't worry if you didn't pay too much for it someone will buy it & then you can buy a better copy!
That's a great book!

@xkonk I though the same. Possibly because it’s just the centerfold and not more of the pages? Idk I am no expert in grading lol.

@Stantheman I paid fair market value at the time. Which it was just as they announced her movie which as we all know is on hold I believe.

At 5.0 with a detached CF, it must look damn amazing.

The detached CF is original w/ the book and not restored/married. Yes, maybe you’ve excluded a pool of potential buyers but it’s still a 5.0 and from the right buyer you should still get it’s full value. Just might take a little longer to sell.

This is why I feel it is important to familiarize yourself with the grading guidelines of the company you are submitting to. One of my major pet peeves with CGC is that they do not give a good description of defects in their grading scale. It is VERY generic!!! But CBCS DOES have a more detailed grading guide and a detatched centerfold is allowed in the "FINE 7.0 TO 5.5" range.

Every grading company has their own grading guidelines and none of them go straight from the Overstreet guide. Whether or not you agree with the companies guidelines is up to you. But at least with CBCS, you know what major defects are allowed in which grade range.

@Jesse_O so potentially it received the 5.0 because of the centerfold and it would of gotten higher had it not been detached?

I'm thinking there is more to it then just a detached centerfold. If it was in pristine condition with ONLY the centerfold issue, I'd expect it to fall within that 5.5-7.0 range. However, you also said "However the back cover is very dirty and has a water spot on it." But if I understand the guide right, only one major defect is allowed in the "FINE" category. The dirty cover and the stain combined with the centerfold make 3 issues.

I'm wondering if you got it cleaned if it would bump up. If it did, and the spot was removed as well, I would expect it to grade within the 5.5-7.0 range. But anything above that is not realistic with CBCS. That make sense?

@Jesse_O makes total sense. Thanks for clarifying.

Dc silver age comics seem to have more staple issues than their marvel counterparts often with blown top staples, lose or detached centerfold etc....apparently their process was different enough to cause more issues or perhaps they used different stapling methods
