Digests don't appear to be that popular here, but maybe size is a factor when it comes to appreciating pulps. In the course of format experimentation, before settling on the digest size that would upended the pulp market, Astounding Science-Fiction's editor John W. Campbell returned to the oversized "bedsheet" size at the start of 1942. These tabloid magazine sized pulps were popularized in the 1920's by Hugo Gernsback's Amazing Stories (they're similar in size to slick magazines of the era like LOOK or LIFE). ASF covers may not be the most action-packed to gawk at, but these pulps are certainly among the largest!   . |

The fifth bedsheet-size Astounding SF from May '42... Interior illustration from Isaac Asimov's "FOUNDATION"...  Note: Foundation is the first of eight Asimov short stories published in ASF between May '42 and Jan. '50. His series would be extended with two sequels Foundation Empire ('52) and Second Foundation ('53) to form the Foundation Trilogy for which he'd win a one-off Hugo Award for Best All-Time Series (the Hugo Award named after Hugo Gernsback who founded Amazing Stories in the 1920's). Eventually the author was persuaded to write Foundation's Edge in 1981, followed by more sequels to the popular series that continued until Asimov's death in 1992. . |
