Digests don't appear to be that popular here, but maybe size is a factor when it comes to appreciating pulps. In the course of format experimentation, before settling on the digest size that would upended the pulp market, Astounding Science-Fiction's editor John W. Campbell returned to the oversized "bedsheet" size at the start of 1942. These tabloid magazine sized pulps were popularized in the 1920's by Hugo Gernsback's Amazing Stories (they're similar in size to slick magazines of the era like LOOK or LIFE). ASF covers may not be the most action-packed to gawk at, but these pulps are certainly among the largest!

Thanks, Ryan! I was wondering if anyone was interested because no one has clicked the little "thumbs up" button on the upper right of posts. I'll continue posting scans as long as I know there's an interest.

ok. I will give you some 👍. They look really cool but I do not know much about them. Are they illustated inside too? Or just the stories. I love raygun covers and Spacecraft covers.

The Brundage WT are awesome and well known. I also like the later ones. And I do appreciate your posts, Catman.

Pulp covers are cool and I can understand the lack af familiarity with interior art. Yes, pulps are illustrated, but the art is sporadic and almost always B&W. However, the interior illustrations are often powerful action or descriptive scenes ranging in size from spot illustrations up to a full page by well known, respected artists such as Virgil Finley, Hannes Bok, etc.

Thanks for the support, the one thing I don't want to do is elicit yawns, wasting your time and mine. Here are a couple of examples of interior illustration (neither best nor worst) to provide a better context for the scope of the art in a fantasy pulp ...

Above illustrations were by artist/author Hannes Bok.

In a horror or crime pulp the scenes would be more violent, in a science fiction pulp the art would reflect imaginative futuristic drama, etc., all in service to the author's story. I'll post more examples of interior illustration by other artists if folks are interested.

You're welcome, Brian. I'll try to get more scans of interiors and covers done early next week.

The fifth bedsheet-size Astounding SF from May '42...

Interior illustration from Isaac Asimov's "FOUNDATION"...

Note: Foundation is the first of eight Asimov short stories published in ASF between May '42 and Jan. '50. His series would be extended with two sequels Foundation Empire ('52) and Second Foundation ('53) to form the Foundation Trilogy for which he'd win a one-off Hugo Award for Best All-Time Series (the Hugo Award named after Hugo Gernsback who founded Amazing Stories in the 1920's). Eventually the author was persuaded to write Foundation's Edge in 1981, followed by more sequels to the popular series that continued until Asimov's death in 1992.

More bedsheet-sized Astoundings with interior illustrations (as well as other pulps) will be posted in several days. In the meantime, I'll make an effort to photograph some pulps and pulp art at the Okla. Alliance of Fans convention this weekend.

While we're waiting, here's a classic B&W Virgil Finley pulp illustration...

Cheers,
The Catman...

Hang in there. After we got back from the cruise I came down with a severe cold and wasn't up to digging through my pulps and doing more scans. Better now though.
