Personal Collecting Goals?5915

Collector Themaxx35 private msg quote post Address this user
Just curious what some of your personal collecting goals are aside from key issues or high value books.

For example, overtime I am trying to put together a high grade signature series set of the Death of Superman story line and The Maxx series by Sam Kieth that I take from raw copies through signing and grading myself. None of the books in either of these sets will ever be worth all that much; its just pure nostalgia from my early collecting days. I am in no rush to complete these runs and I just work on them here and there in between hunts for certain keys.

More than anything, I just want to confirm I am not the only crazy person building a run of something that will wind up costing me more than it will every be worth.

Good luck with that, but you might want to consider a more attainable goal.

I want to get a full set of the Dark Horse Comics Aliens, Predator, and associated spin-off books (Batman/Superman/Green Lantern, Vs. etc...). Its the first group of comics I purchased and/or read, and I've always liked how Dark Horse was willing to take a different art style from the big two and embrace it. Besides, with the House of Mouse picking up 20th Century Fox IP, I figure the original DHC books will be nice to contrast someday with the Marvel or IDW versions Disney will put out.

My goal is to quit hoarding comics and collectibles and find a way to sell the stuff I don't want with minimal or no effort at all.

Batman 100 Up - 10 books away from complete. I'm only 91 books away from a full Batman V1 run. Started this when I was a senior in high school, thinking I'd get the whole run, but as early issues have taken off to the stratosphere (Batman #1 was around 8k in NM back then), I'll probably have to settle for 100 up unless I win the lottery.

Last year, started working to re-acquire Uncanny X-Men 94-300 (used to have 94-187, which was where I quit collecting in high school), 56 books away from complete.

You are not alone. I just bought a Marvel John Carter Warlord of Mars annual 1 to complete the run that I got in a collection I bought - sold almost everything else but I like the Barsoom books so I decided to keep those, but had to buy that annual to complete it . . . I'm now out a whopping $3 (including shipping)!

I collect a lot of high-grade books for grading but my personal collecting goal is commissions...I try to get as many commissions as I can afford and try to get at least a few per convention I attend. I do most commissions on blanks so i can get them graded or ART label but I keep a portfolio as well for the occasional 11x17 piece or original art pages.

Love that list...I only have 2 of those ...you gave me a new goal aside from not letting me wife find out either and getting 1 copy of every major key from silver age in 4.0 or better

oh..and I think I want to find one book that represents the birth month and year of my parents,my kids, my wife and myself no matter the grade (sorry, one book for each obviously) ..thought that'd be cool

and I bought my first blank sketch cover because I told my wife I want to find a way to impose all the major events in our marriage onto the cover so the book can represent our life together. Pics from our wedding day, first date, vacations, etc..just need to figure out how to take these pics off the computer and get them printed onto the cover . Then I'll get it slabbed .

ThenI can rest and stop collecting

Chadwick Haverland did this piece for my wife and I's 1-year anniversary. For those that don't know the story, the Carrie Fisher memorial lightsaber walk went right through my wedding (coincidence, not planned obviously lol) and the photographers got a shot of us dueling with lightsabers

I’m putting together a run of high grade newsstand Uncanny Xmen from 200-300. Mostly worthless drek, but I’m having a blast hunting these books.

Sometimes collecting isnt about the value after, its about spending money on entertainment 🍺

I just recently completed my Conan 1-200 run and I only need about 26 issues for X-Men 6-320. Almost all 12 cent Marvels and DC’s in high grade interest me. And just about any great cover (horror, science fiction, good girl art) will also get my attention.

Well Geewiz, after 8 total years of collecting I find myself with 10 of your 13, I will eventually get the last 3. As I collect keys, the number I do not have keeps shrinking, at some point I will draw a line and be done. Don’t have the mindset to ever do a run. However, what I consider cool covers, pre code horror and Superman turning Lois Lane into a black woman, atomic explosions and the like, that is the true addiction for me. For those, value is unimportant. I separate those from the keys, which one day I will sell.

My goals are much simpler. I want to pare down my collection to maybe 444 comic books give or take. I will use the killer cool cover method of determining the ultimate winners. Not focused on particular keys, characters, runs, or artists. Just the pure appeal of the cover artwork from my viewpoint. Thus I will probably end up with a wide range of high dollar to $1 issues. Not focused on the absolute highest grade for each winner. I do take good care of my comic books but a few dings in the bling doesn't bother me - brings some character to the comic. I don't have to have them slabbed or signed but will probably end up with a few of those. I want to construct a nice wall display (already have a few unique ideas on that) that holds around 24 comic books to hang at eye level. This way my friends can get a great look at the art. Obviously I'll rotate the set on occasion. I want a nice clear holder for each comic book that gives access should I or someone else want to read or flip through them. That's pretty much it.
