Ditch Fahrenheit's Journal #7.1268

When people are afraid to not get it now because they think it will be more expensive later is when the balance has shifted.

Greater fool theory in practice.

Couple that with demographic population shifts (Aging Baby-Boomer & Gen X, etc.), and the inevitable supply side dump as retirement nears; and a new generation that loves the movies but doesn't buy the comics...well...it should be interesting.

it's amazing spawn 1 sells for decent money considering all the copies made. none of the other books do as well on that list

It'll be a terrible time to those who thought to get rich. It will be a wonderful time for those who just want to collect them for the sake of collecting.

My collection prior to 1998 was pathetic: consisting almost entirely of "hot books" I bought new in the early part of the decade, and whatever I could scrape.

In 1996, for example, I bought a couple of long boxes worth of Image stuff for "half price" (when books were still priced at a quarter over cover for recent back issues.)

That included runs like Stormwatch, Cyberforce, Spawn, etc.

So, yes, I paid $1+/ea for those books.

Then came eBay.

And I amassed thousands and thousands of books I could heretofore not afford, because everyone wanted top dollar for them.

Funny story...there was a comic shop in Scott's Valley, CA, that I was banned from for "hiding" certain books that I wanted, but couldn't afford. Yes, that was my terrible crime, putting books in the wrong place so they might still be there when I had the money to buy them....anyhoo, they had a copy of X-Men #94 on the wall...and I had never owned one...and they wanted like $150 for it, in 1995 dollars...but it had been sitting there on the wall for years, and it was slowly, slowly getting sun-faded. I offered the guy a more than fair price for it, but, as most dealers of the era, he couldn't see the writing on the wall, and refused to budge on his price...waiting for the greater fool.

I suspect he never sold it, and the shop went out of business. I, on the other hand, have bought and sold multiple copies of X-Men #94, and the rest, since then.

eBay and the internet changed EVERYTHING from a buying perspective.

Fathom #1 was the best selling book of 1998.

Yeah, eBay gave the comic book a real market place...much like the Chicago Mercantile Exchange did for pork bellies.
