CBCS slabs from the early years - grading22052

Collector poka private msg quote post Address this user
so i have a cbcs slab which was sent for reholdering as it has a crack(not impacting the comic)

the following message was received

“ Unfortunately the copy of [xxxx] does not match our current grading standards and is not eligible for a re-holder”

obviously cbcs is not going to honor the grade. it is a rare book around $1-2k in current grade. the book was graded in the early years 2014/2015. should we start to be concerned that the grades for slabs from those years may not be appropriate - or this is a one-off?

More information would help us determine the reasoning behind their decision. Did they give you the option to regrade?

yes can be regraded - to obviously a lower grade

key words are “…our current grading standards…”

This sounds like a CGC response. If they didn't do it right the first time they should make it right now.

This was a topic; perhaps a year or so ago, where I completely lost my sh*t on this.
I don't know how to find old threads, but I recall a new policy that a re-grade is at their (CBCS) discretion if they feel/think/see something they don't like with a slab sent in for re-holder.

It was at that point, I vowed to never ever send in a book for a re-holder for any reason other than significantly cracked book. I don't need another set of "subjective" eyes seeing more "light bends" whatever the hell that means all in the name of "new grading <cough> standards".

I feel my blood pressure rising again.

I've seen this link before and I thought CBCS had a two person integrity when grading. Plus, it makes me wonder how that guy got the job in the first place.

I also wonder why reholder? Are collectors going for a look or is it a better holder? I can see if a holder is damaged in shipping or if it was dropped and broke.

What am I missing here?

@Rafel i believe reasons are provided in the old thread where the link was shared.

however - back to original question for my slab - should we get concerned about the grading standards used by cbcs for the first couple of years?

In answer to your question, it's not the "grading standards" you should worry about but the hiring practices and what kind of experiences the applicant has, give them raw comic books to grade, have applicant grade them and see how they do.

I am certainly concerned. More than concerned.
It's why I don't send; and will never send anything in for re-holder.
And I have a significant amount of books I'd love to send in to get the nice new cases.

It's one thing to see a clear and absolute mistake during re-holder that requires re-grading.
It's a totally different thing to make it policy to re-grade just upon new subjective standards they created.

I've chosen to not be a victim of their dumbass policy by not engaging in it, 2 yrs ago.

I haven't experienced this new(?) policy. The closest I came was sending in a GI Joe issue for a reholder and label correction. Unfortunately it turned into a thing b/c it was from the time frame where CBCS had a data loss and the serial number was not popping up. It took a few emails and calls to explain to CBCS the situation. Eventually it was resolved properly. However, I have to say that I find this policy odd. I haven't submitted anything in well over a year and no reholders in the past 3 years. When did this change? I know they could regrade if they felt something was off.

I don't believe this....and I know you don't care that I don't believe this. GAC private msg quote post Address this user
Over the course of several years, I've sent in a handful of books for reholder...none of them had a grade change.

Clarity from the brass is needed. My understanding was a re-grade on a re-holder occurs when it's "obvious" the assigned grade is wrong. Are they now saying, EVERY
re-holder is automatically re-graded?

We have had seven older CBCS slabs reholdered in the past two years. They've all come back the same grade but for clarity they've all been mid-grade GA books, nothing even close to the high end of the scale.

Yes quite disturbing. I have red signature labels, a few cracked cases, & even multiple covers rated 9.9. I would love to get them relabeled & a new holder. They really stand out to me in a pleasant way comparatively. I guess I will still send in my low & medium graded books. I would be very pissed & disappointed if my 4th & 5th covers were dropped from 9.9 to anything less. I mean they slab slabbed for protection & they couldn't fade from light with 3 covers protecting them. Clarity would be very nice!

@ICConquest Save yourself from a punch in the gut & loss of $$$. Don't send them in for re-holder and live with the red sig labels, etc...

Even if they come out with clarification on this policy (without weasel words), I wouldn't take the chance. I need to hear exactly and precisely the process from receipt, to who examines, to what the criteria is ... almost as if I was being trained as an employee. I'm in big business and I know how they manipulate words and phrases to be oblique in their meaning.
This policy has been purposely vague for 2 years, and there's a reason for that. They want it vague. Don't take the bait.
