WTF is going on with Weird War 93's price jumps?21498

I have not set up at a con since 2029. PolarisNuclearSS2020 private msg quote post Address this user
Last I looked, which was before Baltimore onsite grading a couple months ago, raw mid grades up to raw VF's were around the $75 to $125 range.

Slabbed 9.s were well below a grand with slabbed 9.8's averaging around $1500.

This book has blown up over the past few weeks, and the first season is over.

Anyone know why this book is in more demand than it was when the Creature Commandos animated series hit its' streaming premiere date?

Dunno.

Maybe just because the series was well received and ended with an indication that this group would continue in the future?? Or maybe just the relatively low number of high grade copies in the CGC census??

damn good show; unlike many shows that folks get FOMO and the show is either mediocre or terrible. (and not renewed)
2nd season is a go I believe.

Census count for 9.6/9.8 is kinda low as well.
Contrast that to New Mutants 98 where there's like 11,000 9.6/9.8

No, I do not.

I pulled a copy out of one my "priced as marked" boxes from my con stock, which hasn't seen the light of day since the last show I set up at in 2018 or 2019, shortly before Baltimore onsite grading a few months ago.

Took it out of Mylite2 and it's FullNack, looked it over closely, looked like it would be around an 8.5 with some work.

Looked it up to see what CGC 8.5's were selling at opposed to raws in similiar grade.....saw it was barely worth fixing it up and paying for slabbing.

I dry cleaned it, took a goddamn half an hour or 45 minutes to dry clean the damn thing......it had varying degrees of sand particles and tiny pieces of debris/dirt on most if not all of the interior pages.

Figured I'd just sub it to MCS for consignment at Baltimore without a press....figured MCS would hammer the grade at 4.0 even with the dry cleaning done....but it would still sell raw at an $85 BIN (their mirrored eBay price would be $100)

After I spent the time meticulously dry cleaning every page, figured I would just go the whole 9 yards , do the spot pressing it needed and a full press to pull a 8.5-ish from CGC at Baltimore onsite....but, I didn't end up pressing it, so I just filed it into one of my /to be pressed/slabbed" boxes.

I had it labeled at $20 VG/FN 5.0 OW Pages, and remembered I had priced it high, opposed to putting it in my $10 boxes, which is the price it would have sold for at a con because I thought the robots /monsters / WW II Nazi elements to the group made it the kind of book I didn't want to sell cheap.

It had probably been filed in that priced as marked box for the duration of 2-3 years worth of cons...and than another 5+ years of storage in my basement.

By the time I press it and get it back from CGC, it'll probably just end up being another book I wasted time on.

Speaking as a seller & In this current market, I have found that grading a book needs to be seriously researched as to whether it makes financial sense to do so. It sure ain't 2020/2021 anymore.

I do many conventions and hobbyists barely even look at my slabs behind me. They want raw books. I just did a show in early January and someone asked me if I had Ka-Zar #1 in the boxes. I said nope, but happily I pointed behind me on display in which I had a 9.2 graded copy. The guy scoffed at me and said he doesn't buy graded books. This response has been quite common lately.

Honestly, I don't need to be paying $40/$50 additional case cost; only to not retrieve those costs back in my sale price. And that's with a lesser bucket of potential buyers.

For most books, and again speaking as a seller, it's better a potential customer "thinks" a book is high grade in their own mind, than if a grading company actually provides a number that IS high grade.

There's alot of anger and dismissive grunts of negativity associated with graded books on the convention scene lately. This is my observation as someone who frequently does small conventions. Online is where I have the only success with graded books

Agreed with most of this, and the irony is that if you look at raw sales on this book, a lot of them with just "please view the pictures, we don't assign grades" type of listings have what looks an average of $100 for copies that are around 4.0's.

So, my raw 5.0 would pull $100 on eBay via BIN or BIN/BO.

Or around $150 if slabbed by CGC at 8.0/8.5.

One cat who actually assigned a grade and posted FC/BC scans, sold a straight up VG 4.0 at $199....which is unreal to me.

I have sold on eBay and at small cons along with an occasional bigger con like Carbo's Big Apple, pretty steadily for most of the past 29 years.

I closed my eBay store in 2023, and I switched to using dealers for consigning my books, for a host of reasons.

Sure, I could pop this book on eBay and push it out the door at $100 now if I wanted to and potentially deal with a problem buyer or include it with my next consignment shipment raw and get $100 for it.

Or I could press it and include it with my next CFC submission....and get probably $150 for it once I get it back as an 8.0 or 8.5.

That will be a wash, considering the time I spent on cleaning the damn thoing, still have to spot press a few deep indents from the sand and debris that was inside the book, than give it a standard press....and the CGC grading fee.

Being aware of the opportunity costs is the way to do things right.

.....LOL, right after typing that sentence, I pulled up a sold search for copies of WWT 93.

This cements the quizzical nature of this book's recent price spike....it has spiked again, since I started this post a few days ago.

Movie/TV hype books typically start their descent shortly after the movie leaves theaters or the first season ends.

WWT 93 is selling for more now than it did in Sept-early Dec....it is usually the other way around.

I don't see any listings of this book available under $200 right now, raw or slabbed.

Here's a raw GD/VG sold at $120, a CGC 9.5 sold at $500 and a raw 9.0 sold at $160+ in auction.

And here's the $200 VG sale I referred to above, it was actually a VG+ at $199 plus $15 priority shipping.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/286223481743?

Haha, speaking of opportunity costs and my wasting time.

The ground floor/base price for this book, at least as far as raw BIN's are concerned from reputable comic dealers on eBay, is now around $100 for a GD 2.0. that isn't missing big chunks out of the cover.

With the GD/VG that sold at $120 BIN (looks like a 5.0 at first glance but there's a water stain that loos like it's about 2" x 2", which goes thru the entire book) so it's pretty accurately graded at 3.0....could grade as low as 2.0, though.

The VG+ that sold at $199 + $15 shipping looks like a solid 4.5.

That said, price compression on raws of this boook is pretty huge, once you get to the $200 mark.

Which makes sense, considering they aren't slabbed.

I would say that you should probably slab those 2 copies.

Especially if you press your own books.

If not, I'd suggest Top Comics Pressing. Je wrote the introduction to Kaptain Myke's second book. He's one of the best pressers out there that I know of, that offers pressing and cleaning services, past basic dry cleaning and pressing.

But , 2 things to consider.....I don't expect the prices to hold on this book for too long. If you type in creature commandos on google and click on "news", you'll see a page full of recent articles on the show.

Gunn tweeted something within the past 24 hours about Creature Commandos, and it looks like his tweet made this book hit nuclear FOMO levels.

Google's first page of search results has a story with "DCU canon..." in the title and another story with "did Creature Commandos just tease a Marvel character?"

Some other articles are shown hinting at the Creature Commandos being introduced in DCU movies (Clayface), etc etc.

I think that is why this book has exploded in the last week, especially the last 24 hours or so.

I haven't read the articles yet but my intuition is that Rick Flag Sr. has been confirmed to be introduced in Peacemaker played by Frank Grillo....and the Clayface movie tie in story...a;ong with the bit about a Marvel character being introduced in a DC cartoon may be the gateway to the live action DC vs. Marvel movie that's been rumored or in the works since around 1013/2014, IIRC.

All that said....those both look like cherry copies.

-so yeah, I'd say you should get them pressed (if not yet pressed) and slabbed ASAP.

AutomaticComics' video below shows pretty solid sales data illustrating that CGC JSA signature labels are selling at the same prices as CGC SS signature label books are.

Not that DeMatteis sigs adds value like Mcfarlane sig on a 90's ASM he worked on....but I doubt there's a ton of DEmatteis sigs on slabbed copies of WWT 93, and he was a co-creator of the CC characters.
