Steve's Pence Thread (And Other Variant Rambling)21486

I'll focus more on one off mucking aboutery. Get_Marwood private msg quote post Address this user
Hello

I promised to focus on more mucking aboutery so here is the first post in my new thread where I will be banging on about pence stuff and other variants.

Someone in my thread over the road posted a new discovery of a UK specific ad in the pence copy of Daredevil #101. What a find! As significant as it was unexpected, after all these years.

Anyway, I like to investigate things for myself and, seeing as I can't post at CGC any more I thought I'd start the ball rolling here. It's something to do, isn't it?

Here's a picture of the two ads in question - it shows the UK and US copies of Daredevil #101 and, as you can see, the pence copy has a UK specific advert for two of the UK Weeklies:

That's pretty bloody cool, isn't it.

I went to my Marvel UKPV spreadsheet, gathered up the other July 1973 titles...

...and nabbed another two of them today - Kull #9 and Avengers 113:

The 6p Avengers has the same 'Haunt of Horror' US advert and the 6p Kull has neither but does have this cool ASM #122 ad:

I'll be working through them page by page, looking for any other differences and will report back, along with those in any other July 1973 copies that I pick up (I'll be going for all of them, except the obvious very expensive one!).

I've already noted a couple of interesting links to my other research strands, but will hold fire until I have more books in.

Well, that's the first post done. More to come soon if anyone is interested.

Be seeing you...

Love the post!!

Similarly if you go back in time there were Canadian variants of EC books with Canadian Adds! - fun stuff

I have a few pence books but these are my favorite if only because I picked them up while on holiday in the UK in 2019.
No immediate plans but 100% we will be going back....and I'll be searching for comics!!

lol...I have 2 of only 10 signed copies of this book and the 7.5 is the 2nd highest grade!! - these were like maybe 2 or 3 pounds each at a little shop in Brighton - a steal!!!

Cheers guys - it's nice to get some friendly participation

I'll pop in every so often and post about something or other - some of it some of you might have already seen over the road, but who cares.

Here's one you might not have spotted - last year I discovered that ASM #320 has two different Direct Edition versions:

The Spidey head version is almost exclusively found in the UK, which is probably why it escaped people's attention.

Go check your copies!

You can see a little bit of plate movement on the UK price there too:

All good fun.

See ya!

As expected, my copy has the Paladin image.

Steve, I also like to look for the differences between US and foreign editions, especially with the cover art. For instance, the Hulk’s face is clearly different on Josh’s and Mark’s MWOM #129 from Hulk Annual #1, but the coloring was changed too.

Take a look at these two and see how many differences you can pick out.

I love this post, great stuff! I have been grabbing pence versions whenever I can the last few years. This is the first time I have seen anything about the ads being different which is going to lead me to run through some of the non slabbed ones tonight!
Have just a few to share though, ultimately would love to get a JIM 83:

A man after my own heart @esaravo!

We could dedicate an entire thread just to the differences between the UK weeklies and original US Marvels. I've owned a few copies of the UK 'ASM #50' reprint and it's a lovely thing to hold.

Here are two other Spider-Man Comic Weekly's that I've posted about before which reprint ASM #136 and 137. I love all the little differences, added bits and redrawn bits:

Zooming in a bit more...

And of course, with those weeklys we also got the longways posters!

Love it

At the time, it was worth about fifty quid so I gave the manager that - she was pleased - and took it home. Later, I decided to give it away in a competition over the road, following the conclusion of one of my many threads that no one understood. A little while later it went nuts. So I basically gave away a fortune! Still, I liked the bloke that won it so who cares.

You can't take them with you, can you!

Nice books @sigep815

Don't spend too long looking - that DD #101 might be the only one out there...

Before I disappear for the (werewolf by) night, here's a book that any of you familiar with the old Alan Class reprint books might like to get:

It was written with Alan's approval - yes, he's still alive - and is available on Kickstarter. Here's a photo of him signing it:

I contributed these pics of the original printing plates for Creepy Worlds #104 which reprints the cover to ASM #55:

The plates are wonderful things to own, and I like to much about with graphics showing the four color (minus the u) process:

All good fun.

See you all tomorrow, hopefully

What the focaccia has happened to my VOODOO?!

It's gone all off register and everything.

Apart from the massive bit of unused white at the top, which can't be off-register because there's nothing there.

No UK specific ad in Sgt. Fury #112, which arrived today - it has the same ASM #122 ad as Kull.

Three more are on the way...

A whizzy graphic table will follow (of course)...

I’ve always heard/read that UK/pence variants were printed at the same time as the US versions and had no distinguishing characteristics other than the printing plate change that had the price. Now that information seems a bit suspect. Could it be that’s how they started out in the early 60s and gradually began to change the ads in the 70s? I absolutely love quirky (for lack of a better word) differences in comics that are supposedly “the same issue.” 30c/35c covers, Mark Jewelers, National Diamond, UK/pence, UPC differences (or the lack thereof), and diamond corner boxes, just to name a few. Even the Mennon/Alka Seltzer inserts or printing errors can be fun versions to luck upon. To me, THESE are the true description of what the word “variant” means. It seems like the term “version” would be more descriptive of a book printed intentionally with several completely different covers. But I digress. Right here, right now, I’m really curious about 60s UK/pence comics having subtle or blatant differences in their interiors. The few I have are slabbed. So I can’t check for myself.
