$25 to authenticate, and $25 to grade the signature. $9 grade prescreen. On top of the comic grading fees. Cash grab much?

I have trouble believing comic collectors are going to care about the "grade" of the signature. If it's on the cover, you can tell if it looks like garbage. If it's inside, who cares?

Can't wait to see the first 10.0 Clayton Crain "infinity signature."

Well... all I can ever do is know how it impacts me (and assume I'm not the only one).

I've historically been:
1. 75% CGC
2. 20% CBCS with their Beckett Signature verification on my previously signed books
3. 5% use of CBCS at Comic Conventions because no line

With this CGC news, all I'll have left is the 5% at conventions.

It's all about the benjamins for me. That's just the way it is for me. I believe CGC accuracy sucks to high hell, but that's someone else's problem after they purchase the book

Question???

How do you grade a signature 😳. I don’t get it
A signature is different for everyone some are scribbly messy others are clean cut But it’s the way they sign
If it’s a quick scribble do I get 5.0
How does someone grade a signature

Nope, I was mistaken;

The introductory pricing for JSA autograph authentication is simple: only $25 per autograph, no matter the fair market value of the comic book. (Grading fees are additional.)

If you’d like JSA to also grade the autograph, you can choose “JSA Autograph Grading” for an additional $25, and the autograph grade will be included on the back of the CGC x JSA label. You have the option to select autograph grade prescreen, which means an autograph grade will be assigned only if it meets (or exceeds) your specified minimum autograph grade. (Note: JSA autograph grading is available only for comics with two or fewer autographs.
)

Well...you don't have to get the sig graded. And you don't have to pre-screen. Then all your left with is sig verification that costs less than CBCS.

Well - as I've said before, competition is usually good for the consumer. At $25, CGC is $5 less (retail) than CBCS on the first signature. Same price on additional signatures. But NOT TO BE OVERLOOKED is that CGC still has memberships. Join and you can get 10-20% off the price of grading AND the signature verification service.

For those with dealer accounts - CGC's discount is 25%. Signature verification is $18.75, not $25 or CBCS's $30. Also worth noting is that CGC's discounts (dealer and member) are good for all their services - grading, pressing and now signatures. CBCS still has dealer discounts - it's complicated but let's say 15% - but it's only on the cost of grading. Pressing and signature verification is retail to everyone - no dealer discounts.

CGC does things I don't like. They did something I don't like just last week. But they are certainly competing on price. If #1 is actually cheaper than #2, it's a lot harder to sell folks on #2.

So anyway, my expectation is that we should soon see CBCS addressing any price advantages CGC has. Be it new fee structures or regular sales. That competition thing. Good for us customers.

From CGC's site:

"Can I resubmit comics with a CGC Qualified green label for JSA autograph authentication?

Yes. Autographed comics with a CGC Qualified green label are eligible for CGC x JSA certification. Submit these books under an applicable grading tier and select “JSA Autograph Authentication” as an add-on service. JSA will determine if the autograph is genuine, and CGC will regrade and encapsulate the comic."

Does this mean that CGC is stating their past grading has no credibility and you'll have to pay them to regrade the book?

Maybe it's a typo and they meant charge a "reholder" fee. Otherwise it only reinforces the pyramid scheme theory.

I find it hard to believe many people would be submitting qualified slabs for authentication if they have to fork over hundreds of dollars for grading fees.

@flanders
Yeah - regrading the Green Labels with unwitnessed signatures when sent in for signature verification by JSA seems unnecessary. ASSUMING the CGC green label book is sent in to CGC with the slab intact and it doesn't look to be tampered with then it ought to be treated as a reholder with only JSA reviewing the signature(s)

And it's not just the cost of regrading. People are gonna be much disinclined to use the service if there is a chance books will drop in grade. CGC certainly wants unwitnessed, previously graded signed books to come back for signature verification. So maybe - as you have done - once it's pointed out they will change it to a reholder.

Cgc has confirmed that if you resubmit one of their slabs for signature verification you will also be charged for grading and the grading fee may be higher, since the signature increases the fmv of the book.

I’ve thought for a long time CBCS could use a label change to differentiate Witnessed and verified signatures. With CGC joining as competition for Verified signatures, it’s the ideal time to make an adjustment.

Use gold foil instead of yellow for Witnessed signatures so that CBCS will stand apart from CGC.

And silver foil labels for Verified signatures.
