Mint-Hunter Comics : YouTuber trades šŸ”‘ for long box of mostly $5-$10 books19177

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=aJArCOe9ynE

I don’t usually watch comic YouTubers, let me start off by saying that. šŸ˜‚

That said, I am curious how guys like this manage to make any profit at all on buying and/or trading comics for resale.

The ā€œlong box of DC keysā€ he got in trade for a Daredevil 1 CGC 3.5, which would sell within a week if posted on eBay a few hundred dollars below GPA average, call it a $3500 BIN if eager to flip it.

The guy valued the long box at around $4500, he went book by book and showed each book.

Most of them he overvalued.- it looked more like $1500 or so of books to me, at the very most.

Only a handful of minor to significant SA keys worth $50 or more a pop, were in the box. Probably about a dozen.

Superboy 68 in low grade, worth a few hundred dollars, was the only book I saw good for ovee $200.

Whomever traded that box to this guy knew WTF he was doing-

This video is an example of everything collectors/novice dealers should NOT do.Not only did he not get close to ā€œequal valueā€, when trading down, he got thousands less when the principle advantage (only advantage actually) in trading down is to get at the very least TWICE what the value of the 1 big book you’re trading away is.ā€œ

If any boardies live in the Cherry Hill NJ/Philadelphia PA area and want to set up an appointment to trade books worth $100 and up for 2-3 times the Overstreet value of books worth $5 to $50/each, send me a DM and I’ll make that happen.

@bronte, I like to follow how dealers market books on alternative platforms past eBay to help understand market trends and so on.

I don’t normally watch YouTube comic channels, I spent that 25 minutes watching that out of morbid curiosity, really.

I felt bad for that dude, he just created not only hours upon hours of work for himself in selling 200+ book’s individually on the internet and at comic cons (where he’d have to sell most of his prices at least 50% off sticker) but also threw out upwards of a four thousand dollar pay day.

The Daredevil reboot makes that slab bound to sell at around 4 grand, within a few months or so.

Hw lost around $2500 in actual FMV and gained dozens of hours in work needed to sell $1500 worth of 200+ books, one at a time.

Oh, and this is actually a serious offer.

I don’t set up at cons due to my he pandemic- I can’t stand wearing an n95 mask for more than an hour.

I have about 20 short boxes split between $3,$5 and $10 price point short boxes.

My $3 books would be worth around $6 in Overstreet $5 books around $7 to $12 in Overstreet and my $10 books would be worth about $12-$20 in Overstreet.

So there’s a 200% profit baked in.

The last comic con I set up was in 2019,and I haven’t pulled books that got hot to flip on eBay at all.

My prices as marked short boxes are generally about FMV, haven’t touched them since 2019 either.

I’d give up double trade value in my prices as marked boxes in a straight trade for books worth $100+ Rawls or slabs.

It's funny - at one point he mentions that DD#1 only a few can afford - okkkkk...so true... but more people want DD#1

I would say almost all the books in that box he bought while yes -many more people can afford them - much fewer people actually want them

Even Adventure 269 -sure!! 1st Aqualad - but really...who wants it? in this modern world - is Aqualad gonna be on a team? have a film? have a show?? - what?? NO??!!!
I have it because I'm filling out what I can afford to get the 1st appearances of all the Teen Titans (robin and Speedy likely off the table - although I have the 1st Silver/Origin Speedy)

I mean - on face value yes - these may be 'worth' more - but will be so much harder to sell - so, so much harder -in fact - many, many, many of those books I don't think you could actually move

@Katkomics James Gunn is taking over DC and his inspiration came from Young Justice. He could easily make an Aqualad movie.

James/Mint-Hunter is a huge DC fan and is banking on James Gunn. I even commented on the video saying I wouldn't have traded a DD1. At the end of the day, it's his book and his collection. He's one of the few YouTubers I watch because he doesn't pimp the top ten list. He's not like ComicTom or Verygary. Every collector should buy the books that they love.

My collection is all over the place I collect Batman, Topps Comics, Sonic, and all different types of shit.

Also, check out threesixtycomics, and Josh'scomics both great youtube channels.

Yea... when you see James with his addition in the bottom right corner he takes books that are barely $0.50 and puts an FMV of $3 in his tally.
Then does that x400.
Stock, filler books may have an fmv of $3, but I he'll be Methusaleh before they all sell for that. To his credit he does seem to really love the hobby and is a fan

The rest of those youtubers, instagramers, whatnotters, and cbsi'ers are all in cahoots with one another and are quite cutthroat despite their cheery we're all in this together kumbayah public portrayal

@Thomas8683 lol...sorry... I don't really watch YouTube comic stuff. Yes 100% buy what you want/love it's his collection do do with what he wants.

But...it seems like the goal was sell 1 key for more valuable 'other' books. If the bet is that DC gets their stuff together and movies save these books...thats brave...very brave

I mean..hey.. I could be and am very frequently wrong..history says most of those books have been flat for decades...but whatever

If he doesn't want the peanut gallery to comment...dont post on youtube or here really

and yes..my collection too is all over..9.5k books can't help but be that way

Well, biggest movies were all DC for a much longer time. Marvel outperformance is recent history (and looks likely to be ā€œhistoryā€ again soon). Comic price trends? Pick the period and you’ll find winners and losers on each side. Right now, if I’m thinking ā€œinvestmentā€ or ā€œspeculationā€ DC books are the smart play. Especially when majority say otherwise.

I run as far as I can from purchasing anything those YouTubers discuss.
And if on ComicTom? - I run to another planet.

Anything and everything they discuss or pump or whatever word you want to use becomes the hot topic and now you're battling with thousands of other hobbyists for that book. Not a good look if you're desiring to make money by buying and selling quickly.

My take is to stay away from ANY trend that those YouTubers discuss/push. If the Marvel pandemic era showed anything it is that ultimately there will be folks that are going to be left holding the bag at some point. Every pinnacle comes down. Don't be that person. If you're going to take an action, check to see if you already have the book(s) now; and sell at that very moment Youtubers are pumping it & don't look back when it's gone.

I'm staying away from the DC trend for buying and opting instead to sell DC now. The Marvel trend showed me that it all comes crashing down eventually and I don't want to be holding that proverbial bag.

Generally speaking, I don't buy during a trend. I sell and don't care if I hit it at it's very peak. It's better than losing

And finally, there is a history now with Marvel. The pool of those getting burned that bought during a heated trend is lower as I'm sure some are still feeling the sting of Marvel. So tread lightly with DC purchases unless you can get them for dirt cheap in garage sales, facebook, or poorly operated LCS's

If someone doesn’t buy during ā€œa trendā€, they will likely never buy anything.

That’s fine. There are quotes that can be misapplied to those sorts ā€œa cynic knows the price of ā€¦ā€

As for history lessons from the Marvel bubble. I will suggest that it reinforces the ability to ā€œhit new highsā€ and more firmly establishes comics’ mass culture impact and collectibility. It is actually a boon to long-term value (discarding the segments that are due for discard). Other examples? Stock markets, collectible cards, real estate. More recently, bitcoin (hit $20k years ago only to lose 90% of its value, to rise again to triple the prior high). Not saying bitcoin merits new highs but rather that market cycles don’t really ā€œburnā€ bridges for future participants. Instead they embolden them.

People are getting burned during a trend because they buy into fomo. People are dumb enough to spend 900 dollars on a Booster Gold 9.8. Not all YouTubers push some agenda I watch a lot of YouTubers that collect what they love. The problem is people like Nerdygirl and Comictom that work for Key collector. They get paid to push those books by Whatnot and KC. Check out Pop Comics, LunchmoneyComics, and Bronzeville comics.

Everyone can make money if one is smart, no matter what one purchase and then sells. I am merely stating that ultimately people will lose when the down happens. And they have with marvel.
Be careful, real careful with buying at fmv during a trend which is now DC. That's what social media is pushing with this "Gunn Effect"
If you're buying Weird War Tales 93 now that's on every youtuber/social media trend/push, you might want re-evaluate your buying

(Or not, and help pad my wallet. Your choice)

I've watched a lot of Mint Hunter's videos and unlike most other YTubers, he seems like a genuine guy who really just loves the hobby. It is a sweet box of comics but most of us wouldn't make that trade just because of the labor that would have to go into selling them. For him, I know he loves DC and I have a feeling he enjoys the handling and transactional part of selling all those. I hope it works out for him.

On a side note, my wife takes a similar approach to selling on OfferUp here in the Houston area where we live. She will spend an hour taking pictures and listing an item to make $5. I stopped telling her that the time was more valuable because she gets some king of thrill from making a sale. I'm guessing Mint Hunter is of similar mindset.

Putting time into those 5 dollar sales makes all the difference. It's the one-dollar, five-dollar, and ten-dollar bins that keep the lights on. Whenever I'm at shows I see more people on their hands and knees going through bins. I'm not saying that wall books are not important it just takes longer to sell them. I go to some of my local shops with the same wall books up for the past two months. The back issues bins change every couple of days because of how fast they fly.

I watch a few of the YouTubers, many just to see what they are promoting. It’s great when I already own some of the books that they are pumping up, and generally don’t care about most of the ones I don’t. As far as being influencers, I have bought and sold zero books based on their videos.
The Mint Hunter guy, James, seems like a real collector. I watched the video in question, and thought the same thing most of people here thought, I would never make that trade! In fact, I almost posted to his video that I had many of those DC keys and would gladly make a trade with him for any other SA blue chip key he’d be willing to part with. I have watched several of his videos, and he is a big DC guy, with nice runs of Batman and Green Lantern. He was recently laid off from his full-time job in the financial word, and is going to try to earn a living from comics. He also is an amateur artist, and is trying to see if he can make any money from that angle. And I think he is getting married soon too. I wish him luck.

@EbayMafia I visit several in the area and will list them below for you. I personally collect mostly slabs and it seems the LCS's in Houston have a poor selection or they are WAY overpriced. I am also into toys & statues & puzzles and that's primarily what I buy from the LCS's here. My favorites are Nan's & Third Planet which are both fairly large and unique.

Atomic Monkey Comics

Bedrock City Comics (chain with several locations - all similar but also all have some differences. They have a 50% off sale twice a year I think and you can get some very good deals then.)

Nan's Comics & Toys

Third Planet Comics

@EbayMafia

Third Planet Comics has a cool story detailed in the link below. Cool probably is the right word, but they are in an old one-story building sitting next to a multi-story Crowne Plaza Hotel. I mean right up against it with enough room for two cars to pass. For years, rowdy Crowne patrons would get drunk and throw items off their balconies onto the roof of Third Planet and one night someone took it way too far. Third Planet sued/is suing Crowne for negligence and had a comic book made for illustration.

If he's here he would welcome friendly advice in that regard I'm sure.
