reminds me of the hoopala about the halloweeners dressed as SPider Gwen and lady Thor in the Deadpool issue before they were properly introduced ....(if memory serves correctly)
the obvious being these were costumes and not the actual characters so, voila no first appearance. Same with appearing on a poster on the wall I guess.....

@Darkseid_of_town I thought of the same. Go buy your Hawkeye vs Deadpool #0, everybody. You'll be sitting on a goldmine.

The market will dictate.

Remember this book with a Captain America on the cover before Avengers 4.

It's not Captain America but a character called the acrobat.

I recently learned 1st appearance of the Leader was Tales to Astonish 63, not 62. Took me awhile to hunt down a good one. I had a 62 forever thinking it was first. So many like that. Gotta be on your toes.

What it comes down to is it's an opinion. Just like the grade given to a book card coin or any collectable.

The 'flavor' of an appearance can be an opinion, but opinions can't change the fact that Wolverine appears in Hulk 180 first. No one can say they saw Wolverine in a comic story prior to that issue.

Nobody disputes Hulk 180 being the first appearance...it is 100% conclusive and agreed upon that 180 is the first appearance of Wolverine.

What is not agreed upon is the definitions of or differences between Cameo, 1st appearance, 1st full appearance etc.

This is the first image of Wolverine (not counting ads) and this is Hulk 180...last page of the book.

Yhe overstreet price guide for years and years claimed the 1st Lois Lane cover appearance was Action Comics 29 yet there she is on Action Comics 27 with a yellow dress. Grading Companies have now got it right.

Correct @Nearmint67!
He does show up almost 12 years later to try and attack Lois Lane again.
But Superman is there again!

New X-Men #115 is labelled as the first appearance of Negasonic Teenage Warhead. Alive in the first panel, dead in the second, and she isn't even called by name in the issue. So, it would seem that the definitions of cameo appearance, 1st appearance, 1st full appearance, and so on are indeed fluid.

Quick question about “first appearances”..

Ms marvel #1 claims to be the first appearance of carol Danvers

But Marvel superheroes #13 makes the same claim.

So what is it, which is the first appearance?

@multi007

If you look more carefully at the cgc notes it's 1st Danvers as ms marvel. Not 1st Danvers.

I don't think Ms Marvel claims to be the first appearance of Carol Danvers. She appears in a number of Captain Marvel stories before that. She doesn't get powers until Captain Marvel 18 and doesn't become Ms Marvel until Ms Marvel 1 though.

@Bronte @xkonk Ah ok - so it has to do with when she gets her powers and becomes ms marvel...

like "clark Kent"... he can have a 1st appearance as "clark kent" when he was a boy/teen, but then his first appearance as "superman" can be many issues later...

am i understanding that right?

Superman was Superman in his first comic appearance so I don't think it's a great comparison. Carol Danvers existed as a character, and then later got powers and became a superhero. You could also think of Ms. Marvel as her first self-titled series.
