1st Appearances/ cameo18961

Have I told you about the time I dropped off 3,000 comics at SDCC? Scifinator private msg quote post Address this user
I am guessing one of, if not the biggest, first appearance vs cameo rage is Wolverine’s appearances in Hulk 180/181. But, i was re-reading some comics and thought hmmph, I wonder how many people know what this is and where it is from. The art and characters are fairly distinctive, so only showing a partial of the page at first.

@HotKeyComics - bingo!

Here is the first page. Nice little Easter Egg there.

Next Men 14. I really loved John Byrne’s Next Men.

I’ve said this before; 1st appearance is exactly that be it “cameo” or “full”. 1st full appearance is often misconstrued as seeing the character in full rather than a full story featuring that character and cameo being a partial image rather than by definition a brief appearance being a few panels or single image.

I won’t get started on previews.

Yeah, "cameo" is an opinion based term that has NO BUSINESS being on the label from any grading company, just like "full". There is no clear and 100% accepted definition of either, and both CGC and CBCS need to grow a damn pair and stop putting opinions on certification labels, and I'll die on that hill.

i wouldnt count that as a first appearance maybe easter egg at best. its meant to just hint. to me they have to appear physically...not in a background image thats not clear.

Found this right up just now. NOTE, Next Men 14 pre-Dated both Next Men 21 and Dime Press 4.

First appearance of Hellboy and first appearance of Hellboy in color. Origin of Hellboy

The definition of dollar bin diving is right here. This book is plentiful ( right now ) and shouldn’t cost you more than a buck, probably less. So here is the thing, John Byrne hid a treat inside and oddly enough no one has seen it until now.

A few days ago comic guru Jon Z clued me in to a con book that just sold for 5 grand because there was a prototype pin up of Hellboy. Even I have a problem with labeling that, or Dime Press 4 as the first appearance of Hellboy. The images are prototypes. As a die hard fan I want those regardless but Hellboy is red and has a distinct look. The sale got me thinking about the character and I remembered how great Next Men was so I decided to reread Next Men 21 for fun. What I realized is how much I had forgotten. In it Hellboy is a comic book character in the world of Next Men’s heroes. It sure surprised them when Hellboy actually shows up. Realizing how comics were such a big part of the narrative I figured why not read the whole series. Sure enough after awhile every issue had something comic book related, a comic store appears, a poster or statue of a fake hero. Cut to issue 14 and there in the background is a poster of Hellboy in a comic store. Not only that but the page before has two of the books main characters discussing Hellboy’s origin as a comic hero!

So why is this image there? Well John Byrne was helping Mignola script the Hellboy comic at this time. He knew Hellboy was going to appear and the origin makes sense as the Next Men search for Action Maxx who’s adventures are rumored to be true. What ends up happening is kind of amazing. John Byrne becomes the first artist, not Mignola to draw Hellboy in color in a comic. This comic also book predates SDCC 2, technically making it the first appearance of Hellboy. Now you can argue it’s an obscured image but thankfully here is no doubt it is him and I suspect Hellboy fans will want this. As for me, I’m hoping that one day some of those other fake characters come back like the Blue Dahlia and the Walrus ( who’s claws came wayyyy before X-23! )

I’m in 💯 agreement with HulkSmash, first appearance should be exactly that, no matter how full or brief the appearance is.

It’s funny, reading eBay -they have “first appearance of hellboy”. Or “first cameo of hellboy”

@Rbolton - there we have it, Next Men 14 both, first Hellboy in a comic and first red Hellboy .

I don't consider a pamphlet or a fanzine as a comic any more than I do a preview, so for me it's SDCC Comic #2.
Without any context, I don't think Next Men #14 is an appearance either.

Market dictates. 30 plus years ago hulk 180 was considered wolverines first appearance. Hulk #1 is a first but with grey skin. Many many examples of such nuances. That why collectors gather at Their LCS and cons and talk for hours. What it comes down to is it's an opinion. Just like the grade given to a book card coin or any collectable.

What's shown in the Next Men #14 is a poster with a Hellboy image on it. To me, that isn't an appearance of the actual character.

reminds me of the hoopala about the halloweeners dressed as SPider Gwen and lady Thor in the Deadpool issue before they were properly introduced ....(if memory serves correctly)
the obvious being these were costumes and not the actual characters so, voila no first appearance. Same with appearing on a poster on the wall I guess.....

The market will dictate.

Remember this book with a Captain America on the cover before Avengers 4.

It's not Captain America but a character called the acrobat.

I recently learned 1st appearance of the Leader was Tales to Astonish 63, not 62. Took me awhile to hunt down a good one. I had a 62 forever thinking it was first. So many like that. Gotta be on your toes.
