Back story on my commission of The All-New Warriors Three sketch cover by Erik Fidel.

The Warriors Three were in midst of deadly battle with the minions of Hel in Niflheim when both Fandral the Dashing and Volstagg the Lion of Asgard were mortally wounded. Hogun the Grim witnessed his companions being carried off to Valhalla by Brunnhilde and the Shield Maidens. After escaping the same fate, Hogun warily decides to continue on by himself for he has no real need for companions. The Warriors Three are done.

After years of traveling the realms by himself, Hogun realizes he does miss the camaraderie and conversation with his friends. The fighting was easier and the drinking was less lonely. Thor is off with his Avengers in Midgard. Sif and Beta Ray Bill have moved on into space itself. Balder has not been the same since Karnilla’s wedding freeing him from Hela.

Hogun decides it is time to create The All-New Warriors Three. Combing the Nine Realms, he found the perfect companions to join him. Let me be the first to introduce you to:

Hogun the Grim

Obélix

Astérix the Gaul

The All-New Warriors Three. Let their adventures begin, bring forth much tales to be told and glories in battles to be sung in the Halls of Valhalla itself. Odin be praised.

"These Asgardians are crazy!" - Obélix

The biggest of our local comic conventions here in the Iowa/Illinois Quad Cities (Planet Funk Con) was this weekend, and I commissioned a few pieces from artists in attendance.

From artist Gregg Paulsen, two covers.

First up, got him to add his colors to the Bill Morrison 11th Doctor sketch I posted the other day.

And this is his pencils, inks, and colors on this Doctor Strange sketch.

From artist Andie Scott (CartoonsByAndie), a cover sketch and a standalone art piece.

First, the cover sketch - Elvis impersonator Stitch on a Lilo & Stitch #1 blank.

She also drew this picture of my D&D player character.

Finally, I got this color sketch of Lion-O and Panthro on a Thundercats #1 blank.

I didn’t know that modern comic book artists were using gouache to paint, until I watched this video by Alex Ross. Amazing stuff!

A long long time ago, I tried painting with acrylic and large brushes, and found painting comics pretty difficult.

Over the weekend, my son wanted me to paint a Pokémon Wooloo riding a Pidgeot, so I said why not and bought some gouache. I forgot how expensive good art supplies are.

He liked it so this evening I was emboldened to start sketching Queen Ramonda but thought the background was lacking so I did some gestures of panthers.

Then started applying the tonal values and some colors for the base painting.

Still have a long way too go, but it is a start.
