'Naomi' Not Returning To CW For Season 2

EXCLUSIVE: Ava DuVernay’s superhero drama Naomi will not be back for a second season on the CW.

Just two days after the Kaci Walfall-led DC series wrapped up its often pre-empted first season with a DuVernay & Jill Blankenship penned two-hour finale, the for-sale CW pulled the plug Thursday. With that, we hear that the ARRAY Filmworks and Warner Bros TV produced show is talking to other outlets about continuing Naomi’s tale on streaming or higher up the dial.
The move by the Mark Pedowitz-run CW was not totally unexpected.

While garnering a lot of critical acclaim, including from Deadline, Naomi was in a constant battle to find an audience, especially online. The show suffered several preemptions since its January 11 debut, including for the Beijing Olympics and for consecutive weeks in early March. It also has to be noted, because this is Hollywood, the proposed sale of the CW had to play a role in the lack of a Naomi renewal.

Additionally, Naomi is the third DC series to be cut by the once Arrowverse rich CW in recent weeks, following the Javicia Leslie-led Batwoman and Legends of Tomorrow.

Based on the 2019 premiering comic book series co-written by Brian Michael Bendis and David F. Walker, and illustrated by breakout artist Jamal Campbell, Naomi followed a Superman obsessed teenage girl’s journey from her small northwestern town to the heights of the multiverse. When a supernatural event shook her community, Naomi (Walfall) set out to uncover its origins, and what she discovered challenged everything we believe about our heroes — and the people who raise them.

Blankenship and DuVernay partially wrote and exec produced Naomi, which also starred Alexander Wraith, Cranston Johnson and Camila Moreno The series was produced by DuVernay’s Array Filmworks in association with Warner Bros Television, with Sarah Bremner and Paul Garnes also serving as EPs.

technically there is a season 2 in comic form.

so that leaves:
flash
superman and lois
Black Lightning
Stargirl

as cw's remaining

I only care about flash and superman & lois....did care about legends (especially after booster gold's inclusion in finale) but it got canned

The CW has ordered to series all three of its pilots: DC Comics-based Gotham Knights, Walker: Independence and The Winchesters.

All three are based on underlying IP: Supernatural prequel The Winchesters, Walker origin story Walker: Independence and Gotham Knights. Because of their pedigree, solid execution and the fact that this is half the number of pilots the CW has normally picked up over the past decade, all had been major contenders from the start.

2022 The CW Pilots & Series Orders

The Winchesters is said to be the strongest attempt at a Supernatural spinoff to date; it is the first to go to series. Gotham Knights‘ pickup comes as the CW canceled three other DC series: Batwoman, which was set in a similar world, Naomi and Legends of Tomorrow. And Walker: Independence has been getting praise for its expansive Western feel.

Based on characters created for DC by Bob Kane with Bill Finger, Gotham Knights is written by Batwoman trio of Chad Fiveash, James Stoteraux and Natalie Abrams. It picks up in the aftermath of Bruce Wayne’s murder, with his rebellious adopted son forging an unlikely alliance with the children of Batman’s enemies when they are all framed for killing the Caped Crusader. As the city’s most wanted criminals, this renegade band of misfits must fight to clear their names. But in a Gotham with no Dark Knight to protect it, the city descends into the most dangerous it’s ever been. However, hope comes from the most unexpected of places as this team of mismatched fugitives will become its next generation of saviors known as the Gotham Knights.

Produced by Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television, Fiveash and Stoteraux exec produce alongside Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and David Madden. Abrams is also co-exec producer, while Danny Cannon will direct and exec produced the pilot.

Starring Matt Barr and Katherine McNamara, Walker prequel Walker: Independence, written by Seamus Fahey based on a story by him and Anna Fricke and directed by Larry Teng, is set in the late 1800s. It follows Abby Walker (McNamara), an affluent Bostonian whose husband is murdered before her eyes while on their journey out West. On her quest for revenge, Abby crosses paths with Hoyt Rawlins (Barr), a lovable rogue in search of purpose. Abby and Hoyt’s journey takes them to Independence, Texas, where they encounter diverse, eclectic residents running from their own troubled pasts and chasing their dreams, all while becoming agents of change themselves in the small town.

Fahey, Teng and Padalecki exec produce with Fricke and Laura Terry via their Pursued By a Bear banner alongside Rideback’s Dan Lin and Lindsey Liberatore. CBS Studios is the studio behind both Walker and Walker: Independence.

Supernatural prequel The Winchesters hails from the Supernatural trio of Robbie Thompson, Jensen Ackles and Danneel Ackles, Warner Bros. Television and CBS Studios. Glen Winter directed and executive produced the pilot.

Written and executive produced by Thompson, in The Winchesters, before Sam and Dean, there was John and Mary. Told from the perspective of narrator Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles), The Winchesters is the epic, untold love story of how John (Drake Rodger) met Mary (Meg Donnelly) and how they put it all on the line to not only save their love, but the entire world.

Jensen and Danneel Ackles executive produce via their banner Chaos Machine Productions as part of their overall deal with WBTV. Chaos Machine produces in association with Warner Bros. TV and CBS Studios.

The three series orders, as well as the earlier renewal of All American: Homecoming, join the seven scripted early renewals previously announced for the 2022-23 broadcast season: All American (Season 5), The Flash (Season 9), Kung Fu (Season 3), Nancy Drew (Season 4), Riverdale (Season 7), Superman & Lois (Season 3) and Walker (Season 3).

@KatKomics middle aged males aren’t welcome at CW.

As for 4400 Reboot, I was able to stomach that show for about fifteen minutes because I loved the first series so much. It perfectly scripted to fit the one-sided narrative in that dumpster fire called CW.

I never saw the reboot. Tell me, was there a 'reason' for it? i.e. , what was the motivation that was implied for a reboot / retelling? Not that it matters I suppose, but the original had a pretty dedicated following.

What characters are they referring to? I don't think any of the characters in Gotham night was created by either people.

‘Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K.’ Canceled By Hulu after One Season

Hulu is bidding farewell to another one of its Marvel properties. M.O.D.O.K., the streamer’s adult animated show from Jordan Blum and Patton Oswalt, has been canceled after one season.

Oswalt also voiced the title role — a supervillain struggling to balance his company and family. Other actors who lent their voice to the action were Ben Schwartz, Aimee Garcia, Jon Daly, Melissa Fumero, Sam Richardson, Beck Bennett and Wendi McLendon-Covey.

TV Cancellations Photo Gallery: Shows Ending In 2022 & Beyond

Hulu has struggled to find success with its properties from Marvel, which is one of the main brands on Disney+, the Walt Disney Co.’s flagship streaming platform. The live-action series Helstrom was canceled after one season and two of the four planned animated series – Howard The Duck and Tigra & Dazzler – didn’t move forward. All the projects originated at Marvel Television, the defunct television division that was run by Jeph Loeb. It shut down in 2020 and oversight of the TV projects moved to Marvel Studios.

Apparently, the streamer remains committed to the animated genre; it’s home to Futurama and Solar Opposites, as an example. And it still has Hit-Monkey, a Marvel title created by Will Speck and Josh Gordon that launched in November. It’s about a Japanese snow monkey that tries to take down Tokyo’s crime underworld with the ghost of an American assassin by his side.

Hit Monkey is GREAT, possibly one of the biggest "hey wtf is this I just clicked on" things I ran across in the last year. Made me want to go find the comics (which I have not yet done.)

I loved it. Can't wait to see the next season.

MODOK ... not so much. Gave it the "grab me in 3 episodes or die" test and it failed.

thought I had his first appearance of Hit Monkey (Deadpool #19) but it was after his first appearance in a self titled series #1. But always thought the character was awesome. An inteliggent monkey who is a killer for hire.
