When to crack open that slabbed copy?17125

My thing in regards to slabbed copies is this...I collect in high grades mostly, anything 1980 and above MUST be NM, just my hangup! Mid to late 70's can be VF+...I just don't collect much anymore prior to the 70's. So why would I buy a slabbed copy???.......

....when I get sick of buying raw copies and getting shit quality copies! I HATE....HATE....HATE buying slabbed copies and paying 4-5 times or more than the comic is actually worth, but...if I cannot find the raw copy in the desired condition I buck it up and pay it!

That said, I have no qualms about cracking open that poor encapsulated mummified comic and freeing it and letting it breathe! That said, I still have many that I keep encapsulated (for now), but that is not a guaranteed solution for me.

My favorite comics to buy are those listed as 9.2, 9.4, 9.6 with an image of the comic broken out of the slab and item description stating comic STILL in the same condition...EXAMPLE...

When do YOU crack open your slabbed comics? Is it to get them regraded and hope to get a higher grade?, or do you just like your copies to be readable at all times?

Also, that looks like a very healthy tooth, cavity filled, a very satisfied patient I would assume?

I don't think comics get cavities or need those ugly fillers, but I may be wrong?

I'm about to crack my 1st books out of slabs!!!.

Shi#1 and 2 original series Star Wars books. I was lucky and got 9.6s and 9.4s for $30 each....cheaper than raw!

These are all nothing books and slabs take up too much room!

Star Wars slabs go for pretty good money, across the board.

And Shi does have a fan following, it's a book that's about 3 decades old...I think early Shi books are somewhat undervalued due to it's virtually the same base of collectors that go for early Lady Death books.

I'd keep em all slabbed.

Once raw, they basically drop in FMV by about 50-75%.

I collect hi-grades and the only reason I have cracked one out of a slab was to get it regraded.

That's awesomely-funny cover art....but nah, the only reason I'd ever crack out a slabbed book is for a CPR.

Agreed...definitely not chasing grades and with the long TATs these days, I'm more likely to buy a raw book for a signature instead of cracking one out.

Comic books are no place for children with crayons. Houses have walls and doors for that kind of thing.

@OGJackster @brysb
Actually, in my previous life, I worked in dentistry. That poor, sad tooth is either #17 or #18 (a molar on the lower left - this dependent upon whether the patient still has their wizzies or not AND if the photo is reversed, photoshopped, etc.) with a disto-occlusal amalgam that is FAILING. The discolouration indicates that the amalgam is leaking and there is significant decay underneath it. I can also see a crack on the lingual surface, indicating that the disto-lingual cusp is suffering from fractured tooth syndrome. The amalgam needs to be removed and the tooth assessed. If the decay has reached the pulp chamber, then it's endo (root canal) and a crown. Sorry. If the decay doesn't reach that far, then it may still need the crown, or at least an onlay (though I question if that would be effective in this case), in order to address the fracture. Still pricey, but you avoid the endo. Again, sorry.

@brysb That book has a spectacular cover. it!

I would crack a book out if I wanted a signature, and also if there are special circumstances. I have a book that I got slabbed and didn't realise there was a signature (Stan Lee!!!) inside. I want the book pressed and slabbed and the signature verified, but I want a photo of the signature first, so before I send it in, I'm gonna have to crack that slab and have a photo shoot.

nahhh!! issues 59 and 61 - nothing books - only 12 issues away from the full 1977 run and all are non-key nothing books! getting my #1, 42 and 68 graded right now - everything else stays raw

If I was going to put a run of star wars I'd prefer only two books slabbed.
Issue 1 and the rare 107 final issue or whatever it is.

I prefer to buy just raw books.

I can grade and I can see what the book looks like in hand.
I don't do eBay, a lot here do tryin to get the steal and in the process get the odd over graded crap.

When I do buy books already slabbed I keep them in there.

With a TAT of over a year I'll probably be dead and the human race conquered by alien giant ants before you get your books back.

Did that shit 20 years ago in Australia where there were only CGC and PGX.

We'd send to CGC and we got a 9 month TAT and that was the norm shipping to and back from Florida.

If you listen quietly awhile you are waiting for your books you can hear faint voices coming from the southern hemisphere.

*Welcome to our World*.

Just joking people.
Truthfully it was a TAT of 9 months years ago so when in the states I've not sent anything for two years and it maybe another two years before TAT become what they should be

Oooo maybe add my 107 to get slabbed?? I figured 42 and 68 because those can be big $$ books - we'll see what the press can salvage (hoping for above 9's maybe 9.4 on both 42, 68 and #1??)

@brysb I've seen several books for sale on wwcomics that mention the slab has been cracked. Maybe it was in one of the CGC slabs that damages the comic. Does anyone know the grading dates for the creep engine slabs or those affected by puddling?

@Byrdibyrd - i concur. While I have never worked in dentistry, I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express previously.

Same, but I keep running into the issue with people charging the same for a raw book that they think is a 9.8 (but looks like an 8.5-9.2) as a graded 9.8; and that's relying on my crap ability to grade. Honestly, anything under an 8.5 I'm still not sure on. I see things I think is a 5.0 come back a 7.0 and vice-versa. Buying raw unseen is particularly worrisome, but due to inflated costs at LCSs on raws; I'm left trying to find raw at FMV through auction sites.

I am really liking mycomicshop for raws when they have them. Just need a few months to get back in key buying mode and hopefully that coincides with continued return of sanity to prices following last year's bubble.

I got lucky with the Shi and 2 Star Wars books - the graded were cheaper than any raw I could find!
