Who was someone in the comic industry you met who were super nice (or mean)16349

Ive never had a bad experience with someone. I hate when they charge money for a signature even if you bring the item but i get it.

There was a newspaper comic strip I used to love reading called "Cul De Sac" it was about a 4 year girl living life on a cul de sac with her friends and family. It wasnt whimsical just imagination (mostly). The creator Richard Thompson was a regular at a convention I went to. Super nice. he'd love and talk. he was suffering from Parkinsons disease and despite this was always happy to do a free sketch. I had him do 3 (of 3 characters) over time. you could tell his hands were shakey but he did it 100%. he sadly passed away some years ago. His preasance is still felt at the convention as he has a chariety "team cul de sac" sell his books and anything he signed or had before dying. with the proceeds going the Michael J Fox foundation.

his impact in the comic industry was big. for chariety they put together a book with different artists doing their own take on the comic strip. you had other comic strip artists, fans who do art and some comic ones with a note on how much he meant to them

Nick was such a nice man as well as a fantastic artist. We became good friends many years ago and used to have lunch together as he lived near me. Fun times!

David finch was a little stand offish when I got something signed by him.

Donny cates was awesome. We got to talking about his inspiration for the setting of Redneck because he based it off of where I live and man he just lit up and was amazed that I knew the area. So that was really cool.

only time Ive been on a line that line was for wwe legend Mick Foley. He worked on a comic for a small comic publisher. he was at the convention I went to and he was there for one day and did autographs for around 3-4 hours (he did a q&a as well). he line pretty much wrapped half of the convention floor. they had to make breaks so it didnt interfere with booths. i forgot how long I waited. like everyone else...we didnt care about the comic...we cared about meeting him. he was a cool guy. he had a 2 item per person limit (to speed things along). I had brought two of his books, a ticket he wrestled on and a picture. when he said 2. chose a book and photo. he said he'd do both books and the picture.

I have met a lot of industry folks at conventions and they have all been very nice. Mike Mignola, Matt Wagner, Amy Chu, Diana Schutz, Neil Gaiman, Alex Ross, Greg Land, Brian Michael Bendis, Sean Chen, Charles Soule, Chris Claremont, and Kevin Smith stand out the most.

It is understandable, but with witnessed signings because it's an assembly line process instead of organic, I always felt a little rushed and don't have enough time to talk to the creative types.

The late Dwayne McDuffie (RIP) and Terry LaBan answered my emails when I was in art school. David Finch was a guest artist for one of my classes. He drew very fast.

Nice: Marty Nodell and his wife. Sat with and ate lunch with them during a break at Pittsburgh comicon many moons ago. And members of Gwar were also at our table. Very cool. The Nodell's even signed my program! A treasure!
Not so nice: Ron Frenz, not that he was mean or anything, just seemed very arrogant but boy can he draw!

Top of my nice list would be Jim Shooter and Howard Chaykin, both were very easy to talk to and had a lot of insightful stories. Both were met at slower conventions, so they had plenty of time to chat. Probably spent about 40 minutes with each of them talking comics. You could tell that both of them appreciated the fans, didn't charge for signing and enjoyed the interaction.

Top of my bad list would be Neal Adams, if there isn't cash involved he doesn't want to talk to you...and Micheal Golden was a bit of a pr**k to me after I paid to have a book signed. Had no interest in chatting just wanted his $5 for signing.

I wish I remembered his name, a more modern artist that has done alot with Deadpool appeared locally at a con I go to yearly. I noticed noone at his table and approached him about doing a sketch..he began the conversation with me, and only a minute into it someone came up, interrupted and began a lengthy discussion, someone he appeared to know well. He sat there and carried on that conversation for around 15 minutes, totally ignoring me. I just walked off and spent my money elsewhere. Rudest artist I had ever seen.(the discussion appeared to be alot of reminiscing and so forth and nothing that should have been pressing)

A few I have seen that I thought were awesome, Martin Nodell, and Julius Schwartz, and I really liked Michael Zeck and his way of interacting and treating people. Sergio Aragonnes was fun as well.
Al Williamson was very nice to meet.

Met Majel Roddenberry , former wife of Gene Roddenberry, not a comic creator but she was a real piece of work. She let you know how lucky you were to meet her, and how badly she hated doing so. Was kind of shocked for someone with such a large role in modern science fiction to be so......self effacing

I had a great time meeting Bill Woggon, the creator of Katy Keene. He lived in town and would come into the LCS where I worked. He was such a nice man, and he loved chatting about old comics and was just so thrilled when people recognised his work. RIP, Bill.

Another really awesome guy is Sergio Aragones, who also lived in town. He would come by about once a month or so, grab a stack of Groo off the rack, sign them all, then put them back, say hi to anyone around, and talk about his work to any fans who were there. Luv ya, Sergio!!

Allen Bellman was an absolute treasure to meet! The man had so many wonderful stories to share and was so animated and excited to meet his fans! He took time to talk with everyone who came to his table and peruse his work. It was truly an honor to meet him and his wife. I was fortunate enough to get a commission from him before he passed. He is missed.

Thought of another: I met Dave Stevens at a signing at the LCS where I worked. This was very early in his career. He was shy and blushed bright red when we pointed out that he was clearly his own model for Cliff Secord and that the ladies all thought Cliff was cute. All he could manage was to mumble: "He's not... that good-looking..." He then did a very lovely sketch of one of his pretty ladies for the store. What I wouldn't give to know where that sketch is now....

RIP, Dave. I still can't believe he's gone.

Met Neil Gaiman many years ago (just after Sandman started) when he came to my LCS for a signing. I can't remember for sure if I was still working there, or just hanging out all the time. Regardless, he sat and talked to us "insiders" for quite a while before the signing started, and we took him out for dinner afterward. Very pleasant guy.

Most everyone I've met has been nice enough. Frank Miller was obviously quite pleased with himself, but certainly wasn't rude or anything.

Zeck was amazing - my kid was like 4 or 5 at the time?? I couldn't wait long enough for a sketch and was unable to return the next day - I asked for a remark instead and left my book with him

This is what he did -waaaayyyy more than a remark!

Herb Trimble to me was the nicest of the bunch of nice people I have met. First time we met him was in 2013 here in Dallas (Irving). A year and a half later, my wife was in a Starbucks line at the convention in Houston, so happen Herb and his wife, Patricia, approached my wife and asked where I was. After my wife told me, I was like I either left a really good first impression or I really bugged him and he wanted to hide from me for the rest of the con. It was a three-day con but we had to leave the 2nd day, we approached Herb to say good bye and he looked slightly disappointed to see us leave. As busy as his line was, he stopped in a middle of a sketch, walked around the table and shook our hands. My nose was up so damn high looking down at the peasants and was like “Damn straight Herb did that”.

And if I had cue music it would be this

Oh and I know what Max (Stan’s handler and scumbag)did right after Herbs passing, eff that guy.

As far as someone mentioning Michael Golden, he’s fine when he is by himself, but if that witch is in tow, be prepared to get cattle prodded. I asked for a sketch and the witch quoted me a price and tagged on an extra $50 when I told her the character I wanted. I was like yeah no as I proceed to put eh cash and the blank back into my backpack. The witch then saw the dollar signs flying away and had the audacity to “make an exception” and I made an exception to not take their exception. I have plenty of patient but my “patience is a viru” (do not give this away if you know what it is) was not dialed properly that one day.

I remember one year back in the 1990s when I was handing out copies of my Dire Wolf comic at Motor City Con, both Will Eisner and Sheldon “Shelly” Moldoff were incredibly kind and encouraging to me. Maggie Thompson is also someone I met that year who was extremely nice to me. I have talked to several industry pros over the years and I honestly can’t say anyone was ever mean to me. I have heard a few stories from others, but I have never personally had a negative experience with any creator.

Wracked my brain to think of someone who was a jerk and I finally have one: Robert Asprin. Met him at another LCS signing and he stayed after the signing to chat with us. Usually, this sort of thing would be a treat, but not this time. The nasty stuff he picked as topics of conversation... Just... NO.

Neil Adams... well, he was kind of a dick. It seemed like it was all about the money for him. It was still awesome to meet him. A true comic book legend.
