@Byrdibyrd the whole system is an impersonal joke.

I mean, we all signed up for this once quantity trumped quality and we chose products based on the last cent of savings vs service etc.

The collective, non-judgmental “we” of course.

Try getting any accountability or achieving any real say on shipping service provider when dealing with countless online sellers… and just try getting people on the phone with automated call centers designed to frustrate. :-)

Your right, it's all part of the equation that we signed up for. As long as the good outweighs the bad, the equation comes out positive and we keep doing it...as we probably should. Kind of like submitting to CBCS...we sign up for both the good and bad parts of the company because the equation comes out positive in the end.

On one hand, I live in a shady subdivision. Not as bad as it used to be, but there are still a lot of shady people here. On the other hand, our house is kind of far up from the road and we have several dogs. There aren't any stairs going up to our front door right now so you go in the back where there is a deck. All packages are left there. You can't see if a package is there and nobody is going to come up there to look.
Doesn't mean I haven't had problems. I have a dog that loves to eat cardboard so she had destroyed many a package left on the porch. I've been lucky that most of it wasn't super expansive or was easily replaceable. We just have to know when something is coming and make sure she is chained up. She helps keep away the pirates though so it's a Catch 22.

@dielinfinite CGC keeps insisting on sending books back to me in separate shipments of one book each, so I have a ton of boxes right now. Imagine all the used kitty litter I could dispose of AND help the local trash collector to save his back from hauling extra-heavy rubbish bins around AND give porch pirates some stinky-dinks for X-Mas. I'm seeing a lovely WIN-WIN-WIN scenario.

Appreciate it. I keep looking wistfully out the window.

I honestly think there's a good chance (though it's receding as more time passes) that the driver simply didn't deliver it. The UPS delivery record shows it was delivered at 6:02 p.m. I got a USPS package I wasn't expecting delivered on Saturday as well, and it was left in the big fat middle of everything - you couldn't miss seeing it. Since the mail comes before 6 p.m., it had to be there when UPS supposedly made the delivery. I can't imagine a thief would take one box and leave the other.

And for the sake of amusement, here's a snippet of my live chat with the UPS agent the other day, after I told her I didn't want her emailing me another link to the UPS claims page that has an error every time you try to use it:

UPS: You'll need to contact your shipper.
Me: The shipper doesn't have the package. I don't have the package. UPS has the package.
UPS: Our records show the item was delivered at 6:02 p.m. on Dec. 4 at the address you provided.
Me: Your records also show the driver obtained the required signature verification, which is a neat trick considering no one was here to sign for it.
:::pause:::
UPS: You'll need to contact your shipper.

One of the artists I follow had some original art "disappear" from a UPS truck. It wasn't even marked as delivered to whoever bought it; it was on the truck according to UPS tracking and then it didn't exist anymore. Even though it was insured and UPS asked for all the receipts and whatnot, they only paid him back the base shipping amount ($10 or whatever).

Welp, my next-door neighbor finally got back into town. Turns out her cameras caught someone stealing multiple packages from her porch the same night mine disappeared. She shared the footage with me - can get a good look at the guy's face and the unusual tattoo on his right arm, but can't get close to seeing a license plate or anything to make identification easy.

Pretty sure the book is gone forever, but I'm a stubborn sort of person. I'll hound UPS as long as I can manage over this, particularly the fact the driver wrote down that I signed for it.

Meanwhile, well, aside from setting up eBay alerts and talking to my local comic shops, I have a hail mary.

Taking some inspiration from the youtube guy with the glitter bombs, I'm hiding one of my GPS trackers from my PI days in the false bottom of a bait box full of dog crap and leaving it on the porch. I'm wondering if I can manage a spring trap of some kind to forcibly eject the dog crap when the box is opened, but that may be beyond my skills. Regardless, maybe I'll get lucky and catch the guy with the tattoo. Even if it's an entirely different porch pirate, I'll feel some vindication ruining their holidays. I'll let everyone know what happens.

Bastards.

So very tempting, but it can't be anything that would cause harm or I'd be looking at charges that would ruin my holidays.

Has anyone seen the YouTube video of the guy who creates glitter bombs with stink spray inside boxes to heckle porch pirates during the holidays?

I'd love to see him do that with doggie doo instead of glitter. Now THAT would be a video.

Ya, those are pretty good.

The funny thing is, the tech used inside those packages is pretty expensive. But, most thieves try frantically to just throw them away.

Sorry. Didn't read your post before I suggested the glitter bombs with doggie doo.

It would be hysterical though.

Yeah, I'm not investing in four iphones for this. Not to mention I'm not a NASA engineer and can't design and print my own circuit boards like he did. But an old GPS tracker worth about $15? I don't mind risking that.
