For those who signed up to watch DC Fandome you were supposed to have been given an NFT with an option to earn another by sharing it on Twitter.

If you got one then let's see what you got.

By tomorrow, I'm betting that I never look at these again. They didn't cost me anything so I figured "what the heck I'll get them" but I still just don't get the attraction of the whole NFT thing. 😄

Never heard of these & still have no idea what they are. My first thought is that they are floppy disks containing digital comics.

These darn things came up while I was at NYCC in the Convention hall.
Then came the "password" as if I just remember the 100+ passwords and criteria that all the various sites need to get a usable password.

Needless to say I got frustrated with the password; frustrated with the 4G reception in the Javits; and just gave up with getting one.

@brysb I don't know what they're for either, but once I got the first one, and then the second one, I needed to get more.

I got 2 common ones but still don’t know what I am supposed to do with them. I assumed that a I would at least get to read the comic online but I can’t even figure out how to do that. Is there a way to transfer them for resale?

They are literally imaginary things made slightly less imaginary via electrons.

LOL

Non-Fungible = Fancy word for "not Real."

The idea is you can fool millenials into buying things that don't exist if you can prove via blockchain technology that there "is only one (or a specific finite number) of them", therefore artificially creating "value"

It's a bit like bitcoin, only with art and media and etc. instead of "money"

I don't know why they chose a graphic of a floppy disk, nostalgia maybe? Today was the first time I'd heard of these.

I also don't see the appeal of NFT's, but I thought what made them collectible was that each was supposed to be one of a kind. So it seems strange that people have some of the same ones. Is there some slight difference between the "common" ones or are they exactly the same?

TL;DR version: let he/she who does not attribute big $$ to pieces of paper cast the first stone (byte?)

As for customizing… and true uniqueness…that would take too much actual effort, as minimal as that effort is.

I am sure they sat around and studied pokemon cards or something and devised rarity that way.

Note that while I see NFT pricing as a speculative fad, the concept itself is not too far off comic books being valued as they are today.

These NFTs have no cultural significance in themselves - no reason for being except speculation. That is a problem. But there are many comic books so detached from any reasonable connection to non-speculative value (cultural and artistic impact) that most of their value is founded on a similar basis.

No one pays thousands or millions for old paper absent its representation of something else - and the scarcity of its supply that connects us to that representation.

With some it's like artwork, in that there are only 1 of a thing.

Some of them are like Pokemon or Magic: The Gathering cards, where there's limited amounts - common, uncommon, rare, singular, etc. so to adjust 'rarity value'

Gotta Catch 'em All!

No disrespect at all to people buying NFTs, I actually understand the appeal more than most. But it does seem a bit to me like it's catering towards the demographic of comic collectors that joined the hobby "too late," in that they were priced out of most books before they were able to get their hands on them. This isn't a bad thing!

I think that for those people, part of the allure is getting in on the "ground floor" of a new subtype of comic books, driven by a combination of excitement, hope, and preemptive FOMO that will put them at the forefront of something new. I feel like the emergence of video games and VHS tapes as collectors items this past year reflect the same trend of people looking to find the new "it" collectors market.

Apologies for generalizing and I wish those people the best!

I start out thinking it's crazy to assign value to something that can be mass produced on a computer. And then I remember that the currency used to purchase these things is probably easier to mass produce and also has value only through societal acceptance.

It all comes back to supply and demand. We can argue the merits of the basis for the demand, or the transparency or understanding of the supply, but those are the drivers.

In this case the demand is speculative - one of many ponzi-scheme type scenarios out there today. The supply is knowable but gets limited attention.

Elon Musk is the celebrated genius celeb of our time, so it is all oddly consistent. No more comforting. But don’t assume any of these dynamics are limited to NFTs.

Ok..think I have it now...

Few questions though.....

Where are these stored - my computer? - some server somewhere?
What happens when that server goes or my computer goes down - do these just vanish?
Is there a market or platform to sell/trade these things?
can I transfer these to my spouse/kids when I die?
can I sell for actual currency?
is there some way to send 'my' NFT to the artist/writer and have them attach their digital signature or other digital thingy etc. to them or are they unalterable?
if no way to have them signed/sketched...why not??
I'll be 48 soon - am I too old for these - I feel like I'm too old since I'm trending towards the no F's given territory / this is all too confusing and how do I set the time on my betamax!

I am now the proud owner of these electrons forming this floppy disk image.
Now for that pesky unique NFT code

Your copy is not encrypted by the blockchain. It's not using as much of the planets limited energy supply and therefor not as valuable. And you would have to sell your image on the black market.
