Weekly Cover Contest #263 Under-Appreciated15702

Masculinity takes a holiday. EbayMafia private msg quote post Address this user
The rules:

You vote three check marks for your FIRST favorite
Two check marks for the SECOND favorite
One check mark for the THIRD favorite.
You do not need to vote for three covers, but it is strongly encouraged!!! Let's have fun with this!!!

A new theme will be chosen each week, so participants must find a comic book that fits the theme

- One entry per person.
- Must be real comic books in circulation.
- Magazine size books are also okay.
- The book does not have to be in your collection.
- Variants are acceptable.
- The previous winner is allowed to win in this contest.

Each week we will vote on who had the best cover.

- Friday begins the new contest.
- Wednesday at 12 noon EST is the cutoff which starts voting that will go through Thursday at 11:59 PM EST.
- Please vote through the built-in "three check marks" system.
- Don't vote early.
- The winner will be the cover with the most check marks.
- Vote three check marks for a favorite, two for the second favorite and one for the third favorite.

The winner will choose the next theme and begin a new thread.

In the event of a tie, the deciding factor will be if the entry was of a book in a CBCS slab (only one book in the set needs to be graded; if multiple are CBCS graded then the highest grade applies). If both books are in a CBCS slab (or neither are) then the cover with the most three star votes wins. If they are still tied, then the one with the most 2 star votes wins. If the tie remains, then a sudden death contest will decide the winner. All tied contestants are to enter a new cover based upon the theme of that contest. At 9 pm EST, Friday, the cover with the most votes wins.

Re-post these rules in your new thread to keep them easy to find and for new folks who want to play.

The list of previous contests and winners can be found in a pinned thread on the top of the forum.

**Please No Early Voting**

My first win in 3 years of competing, first time getting a decent number of votes really. This weeks contest is in honor of all the weekly contestants whose efforts go unrecognized...
Under-Appreciated. No Keys, No Industry recognized Iconic Covers please. Try to find an under-the-radar cover that you think is worthy of greater appreciation. One that you think your fellow forum members should see. Ideally it would be a cover that some of us are seeing or taking notice of for the first time. Maybe this contest will start a couple of them on the path to Iconic Cover status. Feel free to add a narrative of what you think makes the cover worthy of recognition.

I had always thought of Jim Steranko as the guy who introduced "Poster Quality" artwork to comic book covers. When I got into Golden Age books I was pretty excited to many examples of it happening as far back as the 40's.

Always loved artwork that depicts anatomically correct hands and feet and isn’t spandex laden. Besides coherent story lines, art is part of what drew me to Valiant and back into collecting in the early 90’s.

I'm a huge Bill Sienkiewicz fan, and he definitely is well-known, but I think when people hear his name, they often think New Mutants, Moon Knight, etc. He did this variant cover (along with half of the comic book world doing variants as well), and it's one my absolute favorite covers of all time.

I didn't appreciated this Paul Smith cover when I was younger. Now, I think it is one of the best of the run. Jason Wyngrade, aka Mastermind, holds Scott and Madelyne's future in his hand, like a flame waiting to snuffed out.

I enjoy this one. It's a modern variant, which some people wouldn't even consider to be a proper comic book at this point, and not even a first appearance or anything. But it captures the quiet time, and the sense of family, between a couple of people created to be weapons and part of all the usual superhero fighting and silliness.

I have a lot of favorite older covers, but this is the most recent that struck me since I don't really read the current crop of comics. It's not just the rain or the rips, but the expression and tiny bit of blood from what clearly has just been a pretty hellacious fight.

Why is there a "keep out" sign on the inside of the building? Do they not want the people that man the radar to the moon to be in there?

I think Sergio Aragonés is perhaps the most under appreciated comic and cartoon artist in the world by fans!!! According to Wikipedia, "Among his peers and fans, Aragonés is widely regarded as "the world's fastest cartoonist"."

If you don't know his story, I suggest you Google him. This book is unique in that it helped bring awareness, and money, to the issue of creator's rights. The book itself is historically important. Plus, Groo has been a lifelong favorite of mine.

Michael Wm. Kaluta is an amazing artist that I think frequently gets overlooked. He is one of the few living artists that I would wait in line for and pay to meet him and get his autograph.
