WEEKLY COVER CONTEST 206 - Your favorite cover12567

For a GA collector this is an almost impossible task just because I have too many covers I’d classify as favorites from a variety of artists whose work arguably deserves greater attention. If I pick one favorite cover, it seems like a disservice to the rest. So, in order to participate in this game at all I had to figure out a way to pick one cover without unfairly neglecting other favorites. This is the criteria I came up with: 1) CBCS grade, ...since most of my graded books are older label CGC and have yet to be resubmitted, this aided the process of elimination; 2) under appreciated artist, ...since several legendary GA artists I collect get most of the attention, my choice should be one who turned out fantastic work, but often gets overlooked, and 3) rarity, ...this book was a “no show” in Ernie Gerber’s The Photo-Journal of Comics and is still underrepresented in both censuses. After much consideration over which book to select ...drum roll please... I arrived at my prize, more specifically, Prize Comics #20, with one of the most intricately rendered covers of the era by artist Jack Binder emphasizing urban architecture in a tight perspective shot, with whimsy and pride in America at the onset of war. Without further adieu... Two featured characters on the cover would eventually have their own solo titles ...Dick Briefer’s Frankenstein and Mac Raboy’s Green Lama. BTW, the cover artist, Jack Binder, had his own art shop (notice how he cleverly put his name ...binders... on the business sign). Another interesting fact, his brothers were popular fiction authors Ernest and Otto Binder (Eando Binder). . |

I've enjoyed reading why people picked the different covers that they hold as their favorite. Since it is about time to vote I'll explain the reasons why I picked "The Secret Revealed" from ShadowHawk. ShadowHawk has always held a special place in my memories. The character worked for me. I've enjoyed reading the different incarnations the series has had and the different takes that it took on the character. The twist of the ShadowHawk/Paul Johnstone revealing himself to be what the other guy on the cover irrationally hated was a story line that is as relevant today as it was when it was published. I've seen the OA cover in person. It is powerful. I do not expect to win or get many votes this week. That's what is great about art. We each can find something that appeals to us to hold special. |

@Towmater it is fine if people don’t vote for it. If it means something you, then that is the vip vote right there. | ||

I didn't return home from traveling in time to join the contest, but this is the book I had decided on. In the early 80's I went into a local comic store called Future Dreams for the first time. They had cut up about 5 copies of this cover to create a 3-D Diorama/Shadow Box thingy. It was super cool. |
