This isn't the first comic I owned, and I'm not sure it's even the first X-Men comic I started collecting, but it's the comic I associate with starting to collect X-Men.

I had no way of knowing that 9.8 graded copies signed by Adam Hughes weren't what you were looking for. drchaos private msg quote post Address this user

This was an impossible task, hell I couldn't even tell you my favorite Neal Adams' (or almost any artist's) cover. But when I started to get somewhat serious about collecting comics in the early 1970's, I would buy the Overstreet Price Guide and wear it out flipping through the pages and looking at all the covers of amazing books that I figured I would never own. I was especially fond of the EC covers with their amazing artists and horror and science fiction themes. A few years ago I purchased a raw copy of one of those comics and had it graded and slabbed by CBCS. You really can't go wrong with a classic cover by Frank Frazetta and Al Williamson.

I don't need your vote this week as I'm not in it to win it.

My favorite cover is the one I spent many years of my life pursuing. Back in the early 1990s I wrote a script created a story and presented it to numerous editors, publishers. Most wouldn't even read it because I was only a comic fan and not a big name writer. Dilemma Productions loved the story and created an anthology book to publish my story about a super hero group called Section 12. After that the artists at Dilemma went to work giving my script shape and eventually this cover. There are far better covers by famous artists in this post, but this cover is special to me as it is the first cover in a string of comic stories that I created. My first step to making my own comics

Thanks for reading.

For a GA collector this is an almost impossible task just because I have too many covers I’d classify as favorites from a variety of artists whose work arguably deserves greater attention. If I pick one favorite cover, it seems like a disservice to the rest. So, in order to participate in this game at all I had to figure out a way to pick one cover without unfairly neglecting other favorites.

This is the criteria I came up with: 1) CBCS grade, ...since most of my graded books are older label CGC and have yet to be resubmitted, this aided the process of elimination; 2) under appreciated artist, ...since several legendary GA artists I collect get most of the attention, my choice should be one who turned out fantastic work, but often gets overlooked, and 3) rarity, ...this book was a “no show” in Ernie Gerber’s The Photo-Journal of Comics and is still underrepresented in both censuses.

After much consideration over which book to select ...drum roll please... I arrived at my prize, more specifically, Prize Comics #20, with one of the most intricately rendered covers of the era by artist Jack Binder emphasizing urban architecture in a tight perspective shot, with whimsy and pride in America at the onset of war.

Without further adieu...

Two featured characters on the cover would eventually have their own solo titles ...Dick Briefer’s Frankenstein and Mac Raboy’s Green Lama. BTW, the cover artist, Jack Binder, had his own art shop (notice how he cleverly put his name ...binders... on the business sign). Another interesting fact, his brothers were popular fiction authors Ernest and Otto Binder (Eando Binder).

I've enjoyed reading why people picked the different covers that they hold as their favorite. Since it is about time to vote I'll explain the reasons why I picked "The Secret Revealed" from ShadowHawk.

ShadowHawk has always held a special place in my memories. The character worked for me. I've enjoyed reading the different incarnations the series has had and the different takes that it took on the character. The twist of the ShadowHawk/Paul Johnstone revealing himself to be what the other guy on the cover irrationally hated was a story line that is as relevant today as it was when it was published.

I've seen the OA cover in person. It is powerful.

I do not expect to win or get many votes this week. That's what is great about art. We each can find something that appeals to us to hold special.
