World's Finest 88: 1st Silver Age Joker?11670

I'm going to be sending in all my 1st silver age appearances of Batman's rogues, Batman 155, 171, 189, 234 etc. On the above books, CBCS's labels state as such. Below is Joker's 1st silver age appearance but the label does not state that. Is this book disputed or not the 1st SA app. of Joker? If not, what is? If so, why doesn't the label say so and can we get CBCS to add it?

@Bronte Thanks!!! It could very well be...I've always understood that the silver age began with this book; Showcase (October 1956) #4. If that's true, then World's Finest Comics #88 (May 1957): "Superman's and Batman's Greatest Foes" is the Joker's 1st silver age appearance. If the silverage began before Showcase #4 then Batman #97 (February 1956):"The Joker Announces Danger is. Is there a definitive date when the silver age began?

I believe that the Joker never went on hiatus for more than a few years, unlike so many other members of Batman’s rogues gallery. So would you use his first appearance post 1956 (if you use Showcase #4 as the start of the SA)? Or somewhere else?

@esaravo Thanks! and you're right about the Joker not being gone for very long. And that's the question!....Is it universally understood that the silver age began with Showcase 4? If so, then WF88 is the book....if not then it's probably Batman 97.

This is a CBCS label for Showcase #4

It recognizes the book as the 1st Silver age DC superhero.

I think a case can be made to update the CBCS label for Worlds Finest 88 to include 1st Silver Age Joker and possibly Lex Luthor as well.

It'd be interesting for comments from the CBCS brass on this.

It's like the Roach Motel for comic collectors. chester15 private msg quote post Address this user
I read on the boards, some time in the past, a member was suggesting that there shouldn't be attributions such as First Appearances or similar added to the labels. Seems like they change a lot, are debated a lot, corrected from time to time. It's hard to get an eraser on those labels inside the slab. The subject of this post is a perfect example - 64 years after the fact, we're still trying to pin it down.

I'd say much more often than not it's fairly easy to determine 1st appearances without debate. There have been some exceptions but I think they represent a very small number.

Years ago I emailed Overstreet a message that they recognize Swamp Thing 2 as the first appearance of "Patchwork Man" but don't recognize the more important first appearance of Anton Arcane which I believe is in the same issue. I don't think I got their attention.
I remember one of the stranger Overstreet noted first appearances is "CrackerJack Jackson" the rail-ridding hobo with a big heart first appears in Hulk 182 but doesn't survive to the end of the story.
