Grade my comic - Silver Surfer 310991

Moderator Jesse_O private msg quote post Address this user
Ok, all the pages are there, nothing cut out, no interior marks. Pages are tan, dark tan but not brittle. There are three pieces of tape. One runs vertically along the spine and then there are two short pieces, one on the top and one on the bottom of the spine. I just got this and I'm interested in what everyone thinks the grade should be.

All I have is my tablet camera to take pictures with.

Nope. There are no water or oil stains. But the back is dirty!

@earthshaker01 LOL

I was thinking 3.0 to 4.0 myself. I'm glad to see I am not being unrealistic.

@Jesse_O 4.5-5.0 👍

IF that is sticky tape on the back cover running down the spine then 3.5- 4.0 👍

@Jesse_O kind of rough, did you steal it from the waiting room of that hospital you were in?

CBCS 4.0 or CGC 9.6

CGC is Qualified - Did not use vintage tape

Ok, so we have grade estimates from 2.5 to 5.0. Any of those would make me happy!

Now, for the kickers. First off, I applied the tape myself. When I got it, the front cover was barely being held on. Most of the spine was split. So, I decided to tape it while it was still easy to line up. I know people will have different feelings on this, but I did what I did and this is part of my permanent collection. In case you can't tell, I kinda like Mephisto.

But the big kicker is where I got it and what grade they gave it. Here is an example of MCS undergrading a comic book on commission. It was graded a 1.0 and priced accordingly. Personally, I almost feel like I stole it.

It was acid-free tape.

@Jesse_O, good job on the repairs. A year ago I was re-bagging (my-lites) and rough grading my collection of Adventure Comics starring the Legion of Super-Heroes which is my personal favourite. I've owned these comics since I was 10 years old and they were well read copies. Some of them had small tears or the spine was in bad shape so, after giving it some thought I said the heck with it, I was going to fix them up. I bought some archival tape, and a bone tool for smoothing it out. They are my comics, I'll never sell them so I can do what I please. A little cleaning work and those old treasures were looking pretty good! While cataloging the books I did indicate in the notes which ones got the "treatment" and some future buyer (when my sons sell them) will know what they are getting. Cheers!

Don't be. That was eleven years ago. I've still never read Silver Surfer #3.
