First Appearance of Bishop Cover Question10536

Hey, guys, I have an Uncanny X-Men #282 I picked up a while ago at a flea market, and it appears to be a first print (doesn't have the gold background), but it has a barcode on it rather than the 50 Years Cap block.

Can anyone tell me what this is? I don't see it anywhere online, including MyComicShop.com. Thanks in advance!

It's a newsstand edition of UXM 282, so sold through newsstands like book stores, grocery stores, drug stores, gas stations, etc. The direct edition which has the Cap block was sold through comic stores.

Oh, I see. Is either more desirable, or are they the same to most collectors?

There can be, but it's buyer specific. There is definitely a market for high grade newsstand copies but some buyers and sellers won't draw a distinction between them. Personally, I don't go out of my way for newsstand editions, but other collectors actively chase them down due to newsstands being harsher on a book's survivability. I'll admit that I'm not the most knowledgeable on the newsstand market, so I'll punt this to @Joosh or @Hcanes. One of them could provide more clarity.

@wareure Depending on the year of release, Newsstand copies can be much rarer than the direct editions. A subset of collectors might pay a premium; but it is currently a growing niche as more people become aware of the distinction

If the viagra is working you should be well over a 9.8. xkonk private msg quote post Address this user
Barcode usually means newsstand as opposed to direct edition.

@Studley_Dudley is spot on. This is a newsstand edition, 1st print. There is rarely ever a newsstand edition of a reprint, btw.

I’m not super familiar with 282 sales, (I only own one reader copy.) This being a 1991 the newsstand editions are less common overall than their direct edition counterparts. Any significant additional value from being a newsstand will be had at NM grades, like 9.4 and up.
The thought is the newsstand editions typically got beat up from new, treated like a common periodical, and by the 90’s were less available. The direct edition was far more likely to be treated as a collectible from new. So what we see in available copies in 9.6/9.8 slabs is overwhelmingly direct editions. When a 9.6/9.8 newsstand shows up newsstand collectors will typically snap it up at a premium.

Some good examples roughly in this time period that sell often are Spawn 1, ASM 299/300/361/365, New Mutants 98.

Of these examples Spawn 1 shows the greatest value bump in newsstand 9.8 as it is perceived to be scarcer than Marvel books of the same time frame.

I like to make things difficult by searching out Marvel newsstand editions from 2011-13.

I see, cool. Thanks for the info! Maybe I'll get it graded one day and hope for around 9.something.

I think you could buy a really nice copy for less than you would spend on getting it graded.

+1 to what @Studley_Dudley and @Joosh have stated.

Also there are Canadian Newsstand variants as well. A few of these carry a massive premium especially ASM 238.

The guys at the rare comic blog have done a fantastic job breaking down newsstand vs direct editions. You can spend an hour or two reading up on knowledge that I wish I had stumbled upon years ago.

As @EbaySeller said you can get a higher grade copy fairly inexpensively. I just looked at yours in the pic provided in this thread and that book looks like an 8.0 at best. Many color breaking spine ticks. This is a common condition for a newsstand edition, unfortunately.
