[PSA] Calling the office while driving6461

FORMER CBCS Jake_Fleming private msg quote post Address this user
This is a much needed PSA

Not only is driving while on the phone very unsafe and a ticketable offence in most states, but it is nearly impossible to make out what you are saying. This helps no one. Whatever the reason for the call, it can wait till you park the car.

Thanks

Nothing wrong with a call, especially if it’s a hands free call. I do it all day and its perfectly legal.

Texting is a different story. I hate seeing people in my rearview looking down at their phone. Gonna rear end me, Fkrs.

@shrewbeer It is not illegal to use your phone and drive in Alaska. Just FYI. Freedom! America!

When I asked Jake about this, he said they get at least 10 calls a day and people usually have the window down. He didn't say anything about the radio, but then, I didn't ask.

Back in the day, when we saw someone looking down it was because they were rolling a j.

Hands free is legal many (most?) places, but not any safer. The research on that has been clear for years. The danger is from the distraction from thinking about a conversation, not from holding a phone.

Police officers text and drive around here all the time. Even worse, I’ve seen them use their laptops while driving and swerving into other lanes.

I would also advise everyone to be careful driving at night on the weekends.

A lot of people are getting drunk and letting their wives drive them home.

@xkonk is correct. Hands free doesn't make it any safer. Or less obnoxious.

The radio being on is infrequent, but it does happen. Slightly more annoying than the traffic and car horns in the background.

Came across an article today discussing driving while on the phone. The title basically gives you the conclusion. https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/driving-your-phone-is-a-distraction-even-if-you-arent-looking-at-it/

By that rationale, conversations with people in the passenger seats should be as distracting/unsafe. Perhaps it is...

That link I posted above mentions research on that exact question. Conversation is unsafe, but people have a tendency to pause their conversation appropriately when they can see what the driver sees.
