This is what I like about talking things through... Figured out where the charges came from by talking with the group here, and looking again through the paperwork and the forum pressing discussion, and had a good chat with CBCS to work it out. All good. Grading was handled the right way, it turns out, which is fine, and we worked everything else out. Phew!

Thanks all for helping me figure everything out.

In my submission last year the New Mutants 98 got bumped up a tier. I was fine with the results, 9.8.

If the viagra is working you should be well over a 9.8. xkonk private msg quote post Address this user

Regardless, if they decide the average FMV of the book is a tad higher than what I consider it, that will be the end of the discussion, and that's fine on the grading tier, then we're left with the question marks on the pressing, which appears to be charged more than the grading itself. As mentioned, my Raw price was from two months ago and theirs could be from today.

The book in question probably explains, too, why I wanted to get it all handed before the movie came out... I was trying to get it back in hand and mulling over breaking my New Mutants collection - GASP!

Just single data points, but... I just had a 8.5 auctioned on mycomicshop and it went for $240. There's a 9.8 on comiclink that ends tomorrow and it's at $770. A 9.9 is at $12,500!!

The books shipped so I can see the grades. The two comics that were imaged can now be seen as Featured Comics on the Home Page.

Prices on NM 98 are all over the place.

I sold a raw VF at the Big Apple for $225, or $240, a month back.

2 years ago, I got $200 + shipping for a raw 5.0...and another $200 + shipping for another raw 5.0.

Both BIN's.

Blue 9.8's are selling at about $900 or so.

High sale for a blue 9.8 this year is $1499....which was direct edition copy , not even a newsstand copy.

Low sale was $320.....which is amazing.

Hell, a direct copy CGC SS 9.8 Leifeld sold for $2100 per GPA, this month.

There is no viable metric to cull a "average" price on say, a 1000 sold copies of raw NM 98's.

That was my main point.

You have books with a pic of the book while in a bag/board, plopped on a kitchen counter.

Sellers says it looks "really nice".

The BC is all jacked up, buyer sends it back.

And so on.

Than You have over, and under, graded raw copies.

All selling for different prices, based on a dozen factors.

That said, last I checked, a VF/NM-ish appearing copy could be had for under $250.But I know how to read between the lines.

There is no way to quantify a "read between the lines 30 day average" price.

Remember, that when subbing books that the declared FMV is also the amount of insurance value that is being placed on the book....that was my secondary point.

All of that is largely immaterial.

It is the FMV of the end product; after CBCS/CCS/CGC presses the book and slabs it, that matters.

Example:

Let's say that a copy of ASM 300 is subbed for pressing & grading, a year ago, before the Venom movie blew up and a "raw VF" could be picked up for around $150-$225 (call it a $175 FMV) or so in auction.

It is sent in with a faint bend running thru the middle of the cover & all pages.

There is no crease line, color breaks etc, from the bend.

Spine has a few ticks, one breaks color but very lightly. Also has a finger bend top RC.

Book is otherwise (ostensibly) a 9.6, if not for the pressable defects.

Say it is an 8.0, as is.

After pressing & slabbing; it comes back at 9.6.

A year ago, a 9.6 was good for $600 or so.

You get the 9.6 back from CBCS (or CGC) and you post it on eBay at a $600 BIN on a Thursday, same day as you get it from CBCS/CGC.

There is a 9.6 in auction with 9 days left, 2 9.6's at $750-$800; one is taking BO's.9.8's are all at $1500 BIN's.

One CGC SS 9.8 newsstand Stan ,McFarlane, Micheline with a McFarlane head sketch ,in auction with 30 bids at $1758.pp with 8 days left.

You list your 9.6 at $595 on eBay and it sells on Friday
around 9PM, the price is the lowest BIN available then.

Bam.

The pressing/grading company just made you a sizable profit.

About $400 more than you would have made, had you sold it raw.

Hell....say, that you subbed 2 copies
...Both came from the same source; they were stored improperly for years and you lucked out in a bulk buy.

The other copy has the same defects, only not as pronounced i.e. no color breaks.

After pressing/slabbing.....you get a 9.8.

A $1400 or so book, at that time.

Need I say more?
