Cover Contest Week 90 - Newsstand is Dead!6352

COLLECTOR shrewbeer private msg quote post Address this user
A theme will be chosen each week, so participants must find a comic book cover that fits the theme.

- One entry (one book) per person.
- Must be a real comic book in circulation.
- Magazine size books are also okay.
- The book does not have to be in your collection.
- Variants acceptable.
- The previous winner is allowed to win in this contest.

Each week we will vote on who had the best cover.

- Friday begins the new contest.
- Wednesday at 12 noon EST is the cutoff which starts voting that will go through Thursday at 11:59 PM EST.
- Please vote through the built in "Thumbs Up" system.
- One vote per person.
- Don't vote early.

The winner will choose the next theme and begin a new thread.

- In the event of a tie, the deciding factor will be if your photo was of a book in a CBCS slab. If both books are not in a CBCS slab then there will be a sudden death tie breaker overtime submission by both contestants.

- Repost these rules in your new thread to keep them easy to find and for new folks who want to play.

At the turn of 2018, DC discontinued all newsstand sales, following Marvel in 2013. The newsstand is officially dead in 2018 for the big two, so post your favorite newsstand printed book that depicts a death of someone or some thing! Remember, depending on the year, just because it has a barcode doesn’t mean it’s a newsstand; it’s up to you to sort out if it is or isn’t a newsstand printing! 😁

Here’s one to get you started

I'm aware it's a direct issue with a barcode, sure. But it's a death issue with a great cover.

Also, depending on the year, just because there is no barcode at all, doesn’t mean it’s not a newsstand!😁

@CaptainCanuck that book is published before the newsstand/direct edition market forked into separate entities. Technically, any book before ‘77 could have been sold on a newsstand, but the “newsstand” books started being published in 1977. (CBCS recognizes books as newsstant printing starting in ‘77 as well)

Unless maybe you know something I dont, nice try!

@shrewbeer

The defining characteristic between newsstand and direct market is returnability, with direct market issues being non-returnable. Marvel first implemented direct editions in 1979. Therefore this book is considered a newsstand edition because it was returnable to the distributor for credit.

Trying to say that newsstand editions didn’t exist until direct editions were invented is like saying coins didn’t exist until paper money was invented 😉

@X51 Nice find!

It's one of the more difficult Continuity books to find. I searched for a copy for over 5 years at conventions and comic book stores with no luck. I searched at locations hundreds of miles from home. I bought one online described as high grade. I struggled to call it Good condition when it arrived. I finally gave up on a decent copy. One day I stopped by an antique store and they had about 5 long boxes of 80's & 90's comics. Most worthless. That's where I found this one. The irony is that I spent so long trying to find it and the antique store was one of the closest businesses to me that might even have comics. The closest comic shop is still several miles further. The direct edition has the same cover art with a different coloring scheme... less of a green tint.

Also newsstands were sold on newsstands! Convenience store racks, magazine kiosks, Walmarts, barnes N nobles etc. Direct editions were aimed at dedicated local comic bookshops.
