A rare case where the homage is better than the original :sumo:

This one's quite controversial I'm sure, but I stand by it.

Not sure it ever created a controversy. But I remember buying that book off the news stand and it always being one of my faorite covers in the McFarlane run. This was way before I understood the significance of Action 1

Not exactly a cover swipe but I love the convergence of two of my favorite sci-fi franchises

oh i figured it was "sacrilegious" to insinuate anything was better than Action 1, even in terms of the cover art.

i also have a strong Todd Mac Marvel Cover bias, its the first set of things I ever collected.

Respectfully Andy, I couldn't dislike these more. When it was just the spider related characters, I tolerated it; when it moved to things like Ant-Man, and Archie, it became a parody of itself.

I will however say that Moon Knight cover is an example of a swipe done absolutely right.

And this is what you get when Neal Adams swipes himself 46 years later.

@Point6God to each his own. I can agree that some look better than others.

Here's another great one. I only own the swipe, the original is still one of my grails.

I really liked how the first issues of Remender's run all had an homage cover:

I really like that #2 by Remender, is that a Dr. Doom target there?

That's The Hood, who is tasked by Osborne with dealing with Castle after he tries to assassinate him.

The first five Remender books usually had at least two variants, one featuring The Hood, or in the case of Issue 1, The Sentry, and another cover, identical save that the Hood/Sentry is replaced by Norman Osborne or the Green Goblin. Since the two covers were so so similar, I only posted one of the two.

I think there’s a distinction between a swipe and a homage. A swipe is taking somebody’s idea or image and claiming it as your own. A homage is acknowledging an iconic cover and paying tribute to it. Most of the images shown in this thread are homages like the Action #1-esque covers.
Here’s an example of a swipe.

Liefeld claims to create a homage to his own cover, New Mutants #87, when in fact it is a swipe of Avengers #145. Notice the similarities in the gun, hands, and images on the right.

You're right, there is a difference, and the thread was intended for homage covers and not outright image theft. But I think the word "swipe" has gained a pretty widespread adoption when talking about homages.
