Grading Help Needed

Color Breaking Lines6021

Collector MarcJ private msg quote post Address this user
In an attempt to learn more and improve my self grading skills, I would like input in how much a color breaking line like this would impact grade. Let's assume in all other regards this would be a 9.6 book. Now what is the grade with this huge line?

7.5 if I was selling it

Thanks guys. So a color breaking crease like this would drop a grade by 1.5 - 2.0 points approximately.

@kaptainmyke No need for pics of the rest of the book. I was more interested in the hit for that type of crease in general, not for this book.

MR KAPTAINMYKE would you please be so kind to tell a rookie what book you have that shows examples of grading flaws?

Link: The Overstreet Guide to Grading Comics

There are far too many sellers on ebay who overgrade their books on auction items. This causes people to overbid or bid aggressively on a FINE copy of a golden age horror book but ends up being a VERY GOOD condition comic book due to a tear or piece of tape. The Overstreet Guide to Grading Comic Books is written by Robert M Overstreet. This book will greatly detail and cite examples with images on each grade of the ten point comic book grading system.

This book is incredibly valuable to any buyer or seller on ebay of comics. You also can use this book to argue with a seller on why you justify that a book is graded less than advertised by a seller.

I use the 2006 version...I swear by it...there is absolutely no other way to learn in detail how to assess a book.

I had one of these back in the early 90's. I'm ordering an updated copy right now.

Does grading criteria change often? I ask because their are different editions (years) of Overstreet's grading guide.

My second edition is pretty good. It uses the full 10 point system. Like someone else mentioned a few weeks ago on this topic which makes sense is that there are only a few examples of the back sides of the comics. Might have been Dr. Chaos. But overall the book is very helpful.

Criteria stays pretty much the same - I just like the different editions as they each have different examples of defects etc.

The Overstreet Grading Guide is a useful tool for those learning about grading, I won't debate that. However, way back when I started collecting there weren't any such resources. I had to figure it all out for myself. One of the best things to do to learn now is to use that guide as just that, a guide. Every book has to be graded on it's individual merits. Granted, there are certain defects that will cap out how high a book can grade but even that's flexible to some degree based on the total defects and how the book presents.

Just as an example: A book that is otherwise a 9.8 that has a subscription crease on the front cover which bends through the book, doesn't break color but is still visible will get hit a little harder than a book with the exact same type of crease on the back cover which bends through to the front of the book.

There are no 100% absolutes, grading is both a science & art kept in a fine balance.

If the viagra is working you should be well over a 9.8. xkonk private msg quote post Address this user
The copy of Overstreet that I have says that 7.5 is the highest grade that allows any kind of color break on the cover. Above that you can only have bends. The size/extent of the break is also important. But like Tim said, it's an art and a science.

You can also order OWL cards on line. I bought like 4 of them for around $10 a few years ago.

That "huge line" destroys it for me irrespective of the condition of the rest of the book (and there is a lot going on at that bottom edge). I would never buy a modern comic with such a flaw.

I bought the grading guide with an "OWL" card years ago. I could never match up the gradations on the card with any of my comics.
Never ever.

There is a HUGE difference between the long crease on your book and the tiny blunted corner KaptinMyke showed in the overstreet guide.

Im with Redshade on this. You can call it what ever you want.... 7.0, 7.5 (6.0 to me personally)

Regardless I would never buy that book, with that flaw.

What I was asking is how much a bend like that affects the grade of a book generally speaking, in this example, for grins and giggles, assume the book was a 9.6 otherwise (I'm not saying it is, I just wanted information on the line..didn't care about the whatever is going on in corners, bottom, etc). What I have learned is that, according to the guide, a book with a color breaking line can (should?) never get a grade higher than 7.5 regardless if the rest of the book was a 10. I'm tempted to sub it as 2-Day Modern just to see what it gets for fun.

I submitted years ago , a tales of suspense 52 for fun which had water damage on the bottom that had eaten away the right bottom corner completely through the book. Got a 3.0, was very surprised.
You just won’t know until you try, and someone will buy whatever you get.

That was me. I hate the 3rd ed. Mostly front cover only examples to illustrate the entire comic's condition. The 1st ed. gives detailed examples of the front AND back defects that make up the grade.

It's like the 3rd edition was made for eBay front cover scan graders.

I've never seen the 2nd ed. so I don't know what it offers.

Ok MarcJ let's assume that the rest of the comic is 9.6.

My (highly subjective) thoughts on the matter are that I would grade it as a 6.0. That long colour breaking crease adds up to a lot of smaller creases and/or spine ticks that would preclude a comic from being graded any higher.
