Grading Help Needed

Help With Grading Batman 2275250

Collector Drogio private msg quote post Address this user
Looking to aquire a Batman 227, either signed or one that's nice enough to get signed and slabbed (4.0 or better).

Wondering what others think the grade of this guy is. There is a small piece missing on the back cover near the bottom right corner. There's also a pretty good scuff on front cover along the right side. Otherwise a few creases along the spine and front right bottom corner. Clean bright cover otherwise...pages look off-white/white.

Thoughts? I find it tough to grade multiple defects, especially when there's a small piece of the cover missing

I wonder how good I am at grading too.

A piece missing feels like a pretty hard hit. I figured 7 before the chip. Maybe a 5.5?

Perhaps a 5.0?

Send it in and see.

@Drogio - It definitely looks better than a 4.0. Take away one of the bigger flaws, and I’d say 6.0 or 6.5, so with that flaw, I would also put it in the 5.0 to 5.5 range.

Haha we’re looking at the same one. I was going to give it a 6 or so just because of the spine ticks and on all of my comics it seems that spine ticks are the thing that gets the grade down. But that corner tear is concerning.

I think it's between VG/FN (5.0). You're right about that scuff impacting the grade.

I have a red label signed 227, either a 5 or 5.5 I forget - I have good scans I think, I’ll try to post them in the morning for your comparison... here’s the front at least: https://imgur.com/7KKny1e

Found my overstreet guide to grading comics. 5.0 (vg/fn) states no missing pieces. 4.5 (vg+) allows 1/8" corner. 4.0 (vg) allows 1/4". 3.5 (vg-) is also 1/4". 3.0 (g/vg) is 1/2" triangle.

Eyeballing the chip it looks to be 1/8" vertical by 1/4" triangle. So my guess, given all the other defects preset this grades 5.5 (pgx), 4.0 (cgc) and 3.5 (cbcs) at best, but likely grading 0.5 below those (5.0/3.5/3.0 respectively).

4.0-.5 for my eyes.

In terms of eye appeal I think it looks a bit better than my 5.0 slab (below)... here were the CBCS grader's notes for this book:

Grading notes from CBCS:
edge & corner wear, some breaks color
light soiling back cover
signature verified by CSA
spine stress breaks color
tiny piece missing bottom left corner back cover
tiny stain upper right edge front cover
creasing & wear front cover breaks color
